The people who lost their idenitity

November 26, 2013 | By Roba Pawelos*

The question of why so many Ethiopians are forced to flee their own  country in the first place. Why are millions of Ethiopians suffering around the world as helpless refugees, undocumented aliens, and, in many cases, beggars?  What relegated Ethiopians to live a life of second-class, even third class citizens around the world is nothing but the repression, discrimination, and brutality they face in their own country in the hands of an ethnocratic regime well -equipped with the tools and arsenals of repression.

Dear Sir,
The Oromos are one of the largest indigenous nations in the Horn of Africa. They have their own language, culture, and well-developed socio-politico-economics system called the Gadaa System. Under this system, they were practicing equality, democracy, security and safety at their home.

Racism and Hate Running Through the Streets

Ethiopian Migrants Victimized in Saudi Arabia

By GRAHAM PEEBLES*
In the last 10 days persecution of Ethiopian migrant workers in Saudi Arabia has escalated. Men and women are forced from their homes by mobs of civilians and dragged through the streets of Riyadh and Jeddah. Distressing videos of Ethiopian men being mercilessly beaten, kicked and punched have circulated the Internet and triggered worldwide protests by members of the Ethiopian diaspora as well as outraged civilians in Ethiopia. Women report being raped, many repeatedly, by vigilantes and Saudi police. Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT), has received reports of fifty deaths and states that thousands living with or without visas have been detained awaiting repatriation. Imprisoned, many relay experiences of torture and violent beatings.

Reviving Afaan Oromo, One Storybook at a Time

November 25, 2013  | By Dharra Budicha*  | OPride

More than two decades after it became a working and instructional language in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, Afaan Oromo – the native tongue of over 40 million Oromo people and Africa’s fourth most widely spoken language – remains among the least developed.

The language was officially banned from use in places like courts and media under successive Ethiopian rulers roughly from the late 1880s to 1991. Its legacy is molded as much by the Oromo culture as it is by the history of torture and suppression that the Oromo people continue to face in Ethiopia. Today, however, this legacy is shaky amongst a particular Oromo demographic group: the diaspora-based youth. In the cultural chaos of generational shifts and diasporic identities, most diaspora-based Oromo youth speak very little or broken Oromo with noticeable accents.

Let no one Rob you of your Identity

November 21, 2013 | By  Roba Pawelos*

In Psychology and Sociology, Identity is a person’s conception and expression of their individuality or group affiliations (such as national identity and cultural identity). The concept is given a great deal of attention in social pyschology and is important in place identity.
In Ethiopia, the identity of one have to be told thousand times but ignored for the others, must be praised too much for one but have to be abused and humiliated for others, positive to talk about it for one and unspoken taboo for the others, the conept seems a difficult one to understand but not in reality. Generally, weather we like it or not human dignity, freedom, independence and the like must be build on the base of the recognition of his own or her own identity.

Oromo: Saving Endangered Species at Home and Abroad

November 19, 2013 | Oromo Press

It is rare to come across any other nationality groups like the Oromo from the Horn of Africa who are as subjected to overwhelming abuses at home under subjugation and occupation and overseas as refugees with no safe haven. From destructive events developing at unprecedented rate in Oromia and in countries of exile, we can observe that the Oromo people are facing a greater danger to their survival as a group and as individuals from Ethiopia to Saudi Arabia, Yemen to Libya, Somaliland to Kenya and everywhere in between. We hear of increasingly darker and gorier circumstances our people find themselves in every passing day.

“Ethio-centerism is a doctrine that totally disregards diversity issues and attempts to build the supremacy of one group of people at the expense of others.”
- Ob. Bahru D. Bayisa
Discrimination and abuses wound the human soul. They destroy self-esteem, devastate personality, and expose to varieties of personal and psychological issues. This is especially true when such unfortunate maltreatments begin during childhood due to racial or ethnic differences. These wounds are never easy to overcome. Fortunately, our world has achieved a significant progress in this regard with the help of humanitarian movements and the human rights advocates throughout the world.

U.S. prosecutors urge 22 years for brutal Ethiopian prison guard

November 16, 2013 Denver Post By Tom McGhee

Kefelegn Alemu Worku
Kefelgn Alemu Worku, an Ethiopian who tortured and killed during a period of political turmoil in the African nation, should get 22 years in a U.S. prison — the maximum sentence allowed for his immigration fraud conviction, prosecutors said in a court document.
"Justice demands nothing less," according to a sentencing statement filed in U.S. District Court in Denver.
Federal sentencing guidelines for Alemu Worku's immigration violations recommend a sentencing range of zero to 18 months, but the law allows up to 10 years for each of two counts on which he was convicted, and two more years for a third.
It is unclear if upon release from prison Alemu Worku could be deported to his own country, where he has been sentenced to death, according to the sentencing statement filed by prosecutors.

From one hell to the next, and back: the plight of Ethiopian migrants in Gulf States

November 16, 2013 OPride | By Sinke Wesho*

At least three Ethiopian citizens had been killed in Saudi Arabia and scores wounded following a visa-related crackdown that began last week.

On November 8, when police started the field security sweep, in a matter of hours, police rounded up hundreds of migrants who did not have “legitimate” residency papers.
The following day, at least two people, including a Saudi national, were killed in clashes between police, foreign workers, and vigilante Saudi citizens. Reports in the local media put the number of those arrested in thousands.

Arrests at anti-Saudi protest in Ethiopia: Police crackdown on demonstrations against targeted attacks on Ethiopian migrant workers in Saudi Arabia.

November 14, 2013 Aljazeera English service

Police in Ethiopia have arrested dozens of people outside the Saudi embassy in the capital Addis Ababa in a crackdown on demonstrators protesting against targeted attacks on Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia.

Police units blocked roads on Friday to prevent the protest at the embassy from growing and forced some journalists to delete photos.

One protester, Asfaw Michael, who was beaten, said he did not understand why Ethiopia wanted to shield Saudi Arabia from the protest.

Dear Prince Naif Ibn Abdul Aziz Al-Saud

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
My name is Mardaasa Addisu, an Oromo American, who is part of an international group advocating for Oromo rights. The Oromo people are an ethnic group that makes up 50% of the population in Ethiopia, but are being persecuted by the Tigrayan dictatorship. The Abyssinians (Tigray and Amhara) have committed genocide on all Cushitic people to acquire resources and reduce the indigenous populations. As a result, Oromo (and all other Cushitic people) are displaced in mass numbers around the World.

Is Now Good Timing to Forge an Inclusive Alliance – an Ethiopian Democratic Front (EDF) – on Stable Rock of the ODF?

November 11, 2013 By Fayyis Oromia*

As we repeatedly heard from certain leaders of the Oromo Democratic Front (ODF), they are open and ready to work with the three camps of anti-Woyane opposition forces (with the pro-independence, pro-federation and pro-unity camps) and where possible forge more efficient alliance, some what sounding like an EDF (Ethiopian Democratic Front), which can competently struggle against the TPLF lead EPRDF’s system of domination. We then may ask: When is the right timing? What did we learn from the hitherto failed alliances? How far can the envisioned alliance be inclusive? … etc. No wonder if many such questions can be raised. Anyways, there is no doubt that a well coordinated cooperation of the three blocs based on the common denominator of freedom from Woyane’s tyranny and democracy after getting rid of the tyranny is mandatory.

Coffee in the Eyes of the First Coffee Drinkers – the Oromo People

November 07, 2013 | By Begna Dugassa, Ph.D.*

Introduction
“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”
― Philip Pullman
The above statement is the words of Philip Pullman— a British famous writer. Pullman placed story telling in the category of essential life sustaining conditions similar to that of the food that nourishes our physical body, shelter that shield us from social and natural environmental hazards and love that nourishes our soul. In agreement with the Pullmans words, I encourage everyone to tell their own stories and present their world in the lenses through which they see the world around them. Under the above title, in three separate short articles, I want to present stories to the curious minded coffee drinkers and readers. These articles will cover exclusively about coffee, written from the perspective of Oromo people – the first coffee drinkers.

An opposition party has accused the Ethiopian government of beating, abducting and illegally detaining more than 150 of its members during July and September this year.

In a 39-page report launched on Thursday, the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) detailed what it said were "gruesome rights violations" committed against its supporters and members.
