Lawsuit points to hacking by Ethiopia as Obama makes visit

July 27, 2015 | SeattleTimes.com | By JACK GILLUM, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — As President Barack Obama faces pressure to discuss human rights in his first official visit to Ethiopia, a unique lawsuit back home is challenging whether the African country can spy on an American by turning his computer into a giant recording device.

The federal case alleges Ethiopian government agents gobbled up months of a Maryland man’s Skype calls and his family’s Internet activities. But the man, born in Ethiopia and now a U.S. citizen, isn’t wanted for a crime. Instead, he helps out a political opposition group outlawed in his home country.

Is Obama's trip to Ethiopia validation of corrupt regime?

July 27, 2015 | CS Monitor.com

President Barack Obama spent Monday huddled with Ethiopia’s leaders, discussing counterterrorism, human rights, and regional security.

The visit marks the first by a sitting US president to the East African nation, and follows a much-anticipated trip to Kenya, his late father’s homeland. The visit to Ethiopia, however, has drawn criticism from human rights advocates who say Mr. Obama’s presence there gives validation to a government that is using national security concerns as an excuse to suppress opposition and curb basic freedoms.

Obama urges Ethiopia to curb crackdowns on media, opposition

July 27, 2015 | DNA India

President Barack Obama urged Ethiopia's leaders on Monday to curb crackdowns on press freedom and political openness as he opened a trip that human rights groups say legitimizes an oppressive government.
"When all voices are being heard, when people know they are being included in the political process, that makes a country more successful," Obama said during a joint news conference with Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

Ethiopia’s EPRDF Regime Liability to US Interests or, Asset?

July 25, 2015 | www.caperi.com
The EPRDF regime’s relationship with Ethiopians is irreparable. Genocides in Gambella, in the Ogaden, Oromo, and torture of citizens all over, illegal seizures of land, deliberate confrontation with religious communities, corruption, land grab and the atrocities are endless. The people of Ethiopia have lost confidence completely particularly after the deportation of thousands of Ethiopians from Saudi Arabia and the beheading of by ISIS.

By design US Horn of Africa policy could only be effective if Ethiopia controls Eritrea. If that succeeds, the US can run regional affairs through that channel effectively.

However, this policy has been a recipe for wars because it makes Eritrea the biggest prize for Ethiopian leaders and that means without Eritrea, Ethiopia’s role will be minimized. For this reason, historically, all Ethiopian leaders have waged wars against Eritrea.

Obama’s trip to Ethiopia alarms some human rights activists

July 21, 2015 | The Washington Post | By Juliet Eilperin and David Nakamura*

President Obama embarks on a trip to Africa this week that includes a controversial stop in Ethiopia, where the authoritarian government has come under sharp international criticism for its handling of political dissent.
The Ethiopia visit has raised hackles among human rights advocates who question the administration’s level of concern about human rights, as it seeks to advance new security and economic goals on a continent where good governance and democratic freedoms often do not top the priority list. But to others it reflects the evolution of America’s relationship with the continent, which now offers opportunities for the United States in a way it didn’t decades ago when it was primarily an aid recipient.

President Obama’s Visit to Ethiopia is an insult to America’s Democratic Traditions

An Open Letter to President Barak Obama on his Ethiopia Visit

Dear Mr. President Obama,

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa wants to express its deep concern about what it regards as the wrong decision made by you and your staff in making a formal visit to Ethiopia in late July 2015. This will make you the first US leader to break the US promise not to reward dictators.
History teaches us that the American constitution of 1787 is the world’s first democratic constitution, a landmark document of the Western World which  protects the rights of all citizens in the USA. The following examples show America’s great support of human rights:

A Letter from an Ethiopian-American Son to President Obama

July 19, 2015 |

A Letter from an Ethiopian-American Son to President Obama

As President Obama prepares to visit Ethiopia later this month, both international civil society and the Ethiopian diaspora are holding protests, challenging that the visit will further legitimize the country’s repressive regime that has muzzled all dissent and political freedom.

Ethiopia is a close ally of the United States and one of the largest recipients of US aid in Africa. The significant financial support offered to Ethiopia from donors such as the US amounts to some 50 to 60 percent of the country’s national budget. This development aid has been essential in funding the Ethiopian government’s so-called development strategya key element of this strategy being the relocation of some 1.5 million people from areas targeted for industrial plantations under the government's “villagization” plan. The areas targeted include Gambella, Lower Omo, and several other parts of the country. As evidenced by the Oakland Institute’s extensive research, these displacements are happening without the free, prior, and informed consent of the impacted populations; when communities resist, they are being forcibly removed from their traditional lands by means of violence, rape, imprisonment, intimidation, political coercion, and the denial of humanitarian assistance, including food aid.

Obama’s Pilgrimage of National Interest

Obama’s Pilgrimage of National Interest

July 2015 |  By Ibsaa Guutama

ibsaa-gutamaaThe oppressed and abused of Africa, and their friends and sympathizers are making their voices heard high above the globe that President Obama refrain from legitimizing dictatorship and human rights abuse in Ethiopia. This is not a casual visit, but a pre-planned trip for which arrangements were made to pave the way for the diplomatic pampering of the most brutal regime in the area; a long-time Guerrilla-friendly ambassador was appointed in addition to a visit by the U.S. Assistant Secretary for African Affairs. The rulers of Ethiopia were among those that Clinton’s Democrats branded as the “new breeds of African Democrats.” Many have now fallen out of line. These ones are also starting wavering. This visit of the President may keep them in line before they jump to another bandwagon. Obviously, it is not a pilgrimage of democracy, but that of “NATIONAL INTEREST.”

July 13: Finfinne Day | Guyyaa Finfinnee | Revisiting the Oromo Roots of Finfinne in Pictures

July 13, 2015 | Gadaa.com

July 13 is marked every year by Oromo nationalists around the world to celebrate Finfinne, and to commemorate the heroines and heroes who had fallen while fighting against the removal of Oromia’s Capital from Finfinne in the early 2000’s.

Finfinne used to be the home of Oromo tribes/clans of Gullallee, Galaan and Ekaa, to name a few, before it fell under Abyssinia’s rule in the late 19th century, and got renamed as “Addis Ababa.” Before its fall, Afan Oromo used to be the official language of Finfinne to conduct political duties of the then Gullallee Gadaa government. Since the late 19th century, Afan Oromo has been banned as the official language of Finfinne. Currently, there is a campaign to reinstate Afan Oromo as the official Working Language of the Federal Government seated in Addis Ababa (Finfinne). Culturally, the inauguration of the Oromo Cultural Arts and National History Center in Finfinne earlier this year has been lauded as a historic milestone. The Center has already become the focal point of the resurgent Oromo culture and arts in Finfinne.

Freedom comes at a price in Ethiopia - and the UK

July 11, 2015 | Amnesty
The struggle for human rights is a long one, fraught with set-backs and challenges, so it’s always nice to get a bit of good news once in a while.
Yesterday Ethiopia released a number of bloggers and journalistsimprisoned for exercising their right to free speech. Mahlet Fantahun and Zelalem Kibret, bloggers from the Zone 9 collective, and three journalists being tried alongside them for terrorism offences – Edom Kassaye, Tesfalem Waldeyes and Asmamaw Hailegiorgis – were released from jail after all charges against them were dropped. They had been in detention for over a year. Journalist Reeyot Alemu, who’d spent four years in detention for terrorism offences, was also released.

Ethiopia courts scepticism after freeing imprisoned writers ahead of Obama visit

July 11, 2015 | The Guardian

Critics accuse government of political opportunism amid official attempts to cast release of five writers from media and Zone 9 as routine act of generosity

After more than a year of imprisonment, two Ethiopian women had no idea they were about to be released until a prison loudspeaker informed them they were free to go.

“They were kind of stunned. Can you imagine what kind of emotion? They didn’t believe it at first – they thought they were being taken somewhere else,” said a friend of Edom Kassaye, the freelance journalist who was released from Kality jail on Thursday morning along with another detainee, the Zone 9 blogger Mahlet Fantahun.

OROMO STUDENT PROTESTORS RELEASED FROM JAIL

July 11, 2015 | Advocacy4oromia

At least six Oromo university students were also among three journalists and two bloggers released from Ethiopian prison yesterday, according to various reports.

Adugna KessoThe freed Oromo university students include Adugna Kesso, Bilisumma Dammana, Lenjisa Alemayo, Abdi Kamal, Magarsa Warqu, and Tofik. All were students who were arrested by security agents from various universities located in the Oromiya regional states. No charges were brought against many of them in the last year and three months.

The arrest of unknown numbers of Oromo University students followed a May 2014 brutal crackdown by the police against university students who protested when a master plan for the expansion of Addis Abeba, the city originally home to the Oromo, was introduced by the federal government.

The 10th Addis Abeba and Oromia Special Zone Integrated Development Master plan, which was in the making for two years before its introduction to the public, finally came off as ‘Addis Abeba and the Surrounding Oromia Special Zone Integrated Development Plan.
