Human Rights Watch : The Year in Human Rights Videos Picks Oromo Protest at the top

December 22, 2016 | By Amy Braunschweiger, Senior Web Communications Manager

The gunning down of peaceful protesters in Ethiopia. Animations depicting the devastation of Saudi Arabia’s male ‘guardianship’ system on women’s lives. From these to child brides and LGBT rights, here are the year’s most-watched videos on Human Rights Watch’s YouTube Channel.
1. When we pieced together cell phone footage showing the deaths of peaceful protesters in Ethiopia, it became by far our most-watched video this year – both in English and Amharic.

Ethiopian security forces have killed more than 400 protesters and others, and arrested tens of thousands more during widespread protests in the Oromia region since November 2015.

Ethiopia: detained journalist missing, denied access to family and medical care

December 15, 2016 | DefendDefenders.com

Ethiopian authorities should immediately disclose the location of Temesgen Desalegn, who was jailed on spurious charges two years ago, and give him access to medical care, said the Association for Human Rights in Ethiopia (AHRE) and DefendDefenders (East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project) today.
Temesgen Desalegn is serving a three-year sentence in Ziway prison on charges of defamation, incitement, and false publication. However, relatives have attempted to visit him for seven consecutive days, and been told by Ziway prison administration officials that his location is unknown. His relatives reported that they had not seen him since 7 November 2016.

Ethiopia: Social media and news websites blocked by government to prevent protests

December 15, 2016 | Amnesty International

  • Google transparency report shows dramatic drop in internet traffic out of Ethiopia on two days when at least 100 people were killed by security forces during protest
  • 16 news sites and access to WhatsApp blocked between June and October

“As far as the Ethiopian government is concerned, social media is a tool for extremists... The reality, though, is very different” – Michelle Kagari

The Ethiopian government systematically and illegally blocked access to social media and news websites in its efforts to crush dissent and prevent reporting of attacks on protesters by security forces during a wave of protests over the last year, a new report released today shows.

Research conducted by Amnesty International and the Open Observatory of Network Interference shows that between June and October this year during times of heightened tension and protests, access to WhatsApp and at least 16 news outlets was blocked, especially in the Oromia region.

Ethiopia dispatches 86 spy agents to North America and Europe

December 05, 2016 | Via #MinilikSalsawi

Ethiopia: 86 Woyane spy agents, who recently received security training in Britain and Israel, have been dispatched to North America and Europe to create confusion and disturbances among Ethiopian Diaspora communities. The spy agents will attend Diaspora getting together activities, including churches and mosques, camouflaging genuine followers. The Tigre regime in Ethiopia is targeting communities where its penetration is low or where it lacks control over.  The spying agents’ mandate is creating confusion, disturbances, focus diversions and disagreements among these communities, if possible poisoning some individuals.

Ethiopia: State of Emergency, the Empire of Chaos in Oromia

December 01, 2016 | Human Rights League of The Horn of Africa | HRLHA urgent action

The deadly protests that have rocked Ethiopia over ten months (November 2015- September 2016)  led by “Qeerroo Bilissummaa” literally, youth  for freedom against subjugation, dramatically changed  the peaceful protests into violence after the tyrannical government mercilessly massacred over 700  Oromos at the Irrecha Festival,  Oromo Thanksgiving Day on October 2, 2016. The tyrannical government of TPLF/EPRDF declared a state of emergency on October 8, 2016 to cool down the anger of the nation. However, the  declaration of a six-month state of emergency could not stop the Oromo nation from protesting. Killings, rapes, and the detaining of Oromos by the killing squad Agazi force continued unabated. Jima University students once again reignited peaceful protests on November 20, 2016 complaining that security forces entered campus at night to make arrests. Many students were taken from their campus dormitories and their whereabouts are not known. The Jima University  students demanded to know about their fellow Oromos.

Transmission occurs within families and at school.

Ethiopia: Arrest of opposition leader an assault on freedom of expression

December 01, 2016 | Amnesty International

Reacting to news of the arrest of Ethiopian opposition leader Merera Gudina, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes, Michelle Kagari said:
“The arrest of Merera Gudina is an outrageous assault on the right to freedom of expression and should sound alarm bells for anyone with an interest in ending the deadly protests that have rocked Ethiopia over the past year.”
“This is a move that will exacerbate, rather than ease, the underlying tensions currently simmering in the country. Instead of resorting to further repression and clamp-downs, the Ethiopian government must urgently and meaningfully address the human rights grievances that are fuelling unrest.”

Ethiopia arrests top Oromo opposition politician after Europe Parliament speech

December 01, 2016 | The Washington Post | By Paul Schemm

A top opposition politician from Ethiopia’s Oromo ethnic group who criticized the country’s state of emergency at the European Parliament has been arrested, the government announced Thursday.
A colleague said police arrested Merera Gudina and three others from his home in Addis Ababa late Wednesday shortly after his return from Europe. The trip included a Nov. 9 speech to the European Parliament in which Gudina said tens of thousands have been arrested under the state of emergency in Ethiopia.
