A One Month Summary of Oromian Youth Movement (Qeerroo)
July 22 - August 22/2012
Translated and Complied in English by: Daandii Qajeelaa
The Oromian Youth Movement (Qeerroo) which was formed a little over a year ago is intensifying the struggle of the Oromo people for freedom, democracy and justice in a scale never seen before. Sadly, the accomplishments of this youth group remained unnoticed by the national and international media. To this effect, I have tried to bring to light the reports of this young generation by translating their efforts to English, summarizing, and compiling over a long period of time, such as a year or just one month, for example February 9 through March 9, 2012 of this year.
This report covers another widely intensified movement of Qeerro over the month prior to the death of the Ethiopian dictator Meles Zenawi: July 22 through August 22, 2012. The report is directly taken from the archives of Qeerroo website.

(Bloomberg)Ethiopia’s ruling party will meet to select the next prime minister following the funeral of Meles Zenawi, who died on Aug. 20 after leading the country for 21 years.
Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn became acting prime minister after Meles died from an infection following an unspecified illness. His funeral is on Sept. 2. The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front’s council will probably “legally endorse” Hailemariam as party chairman next month and then recommend him to parliament as prime minister, Seikoture Getachew, the foreign relations head of the party’s secretariat, said in an interview on Aug. 26 in the capital, Addis Ababa. The meeting date hasn’t been scheduled yet, he said.
Parliament, which has only one opposition representative out of 547 lawmakers, is on “stand-by” to swear in Meles’s successor after the nation finishes mourning, Communication Minister Bereket Simon said last week. Ethiopia’s constitution does not cater for succession in the event of the death, incapacitation or instability of the prime minister, said Yohannes Woldegebriel, a lawyer who has written on the subject.
The Meles Zenawi I Knew
Ethiopia’s late dictator was a complex and sophisticated leader — a self-taught ex-guerrilla who brought his people economic growth and repression.
By BARRY MALONE ( Barry Malone lived in Ethiopia for almost five years and was Reuters correspondent there until November 2010.)
I once asked Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who died on Aug. 20 from an unspecified illness at age 57, whether he was a dictator. He grinned and then, stopping, just looked at me.
Nervously, I did what a journalist should never do, and filled the silence.
“A lot of people call you that,” I said.
He told me he didn’t care much what foreigners thought and that the people who described him that way were rarely his countrymen. “If Ethiopians thought that I was what you say, I would not sleep at night,” he said. “But I don’t believe they do.”

The Oromo people, young and old, men and women, will remember Mr. Meles Zenawi and his regime for the appalling cruelty which they have experienced during the last twenty years. They will remember him as an Ethiopia ruler whose regime incarcerated tens of thousands of their sons and daughters in concentration camps such as Dhidhessa, Hurso and Bilate, where many had lost their lives because of foul conditions, communicable disease, starvation and torture in the 1990s.
Ethiopia’s prime minister : The man who tried to make dictatorship acceptable

THE death of Meles Zenawi, Ethiopia’s prime minister, on August 20th reveals much about the country he created. Details of his ill health remained a secret until the end. A short broadcast on state television, late by a day, informed Ethiopians that their “visionary leader” of the past 21 years was gone. He died of an unspecified “sudden infection” somewhere abroad. No further information was given. In the two months since the prime minister’s last public appearance the only Ethiopian newspaper that reported his illness was pulped, its office closed, and its editor arrested. Further details of Mr Meles’s death surfaced only when an EU official confirmed that he died in a Brussels hospital.

On the Death of Meles Zenawi: A Personal Reflection from a Disgruntled Citizen
By Urgessa Tura
August 21,2012
The death of a fellow human cannot be a cause for celebration for any sane-minded individual. Yet the announcement of Meles Zenawi’s death today by the Government of Ethiopia reminded me of a sad day in my life, which I have tried to forget over the years but in vain – May 20, 2005. On this very day, I was attacked ruthlessly by the evil security men under the direct command of Meles Zenawi with Tigrigna accent together with my other two friends. My crime that prompted them to beat me publicly was discussing with my friends about the flaws in the counting of votes in the 2005 election after Meles Zenawi appeared on ETV and declared a kind of emergency decree banning all demonstrations for a month unconstitutionally.
In his televised address to the nation on Sunday evening – May 15, 2005 – Meles Zenawi said, “[a]s of tomorrow, for the next one month no demonstrations of any sort will be allowed within the city and its environs. As peace should be respected within the city and its environs, the government has decided to bring all the security forces, the police and the local militias, under one command accountable to the prime minister” (source: Ethiopian Review available at http://www.ethiopianreview.com/content/2475)
I don’t rejoice Meles’ death, I mourn for my friend
The Gulele post /August 22, 2012/
Meles’ death made me weep for Nasir Abdo, the closest person Meles took away from me. Nasir was my mentor, best friend and a dear brother. He was arrested in 2004 falsely accused of terrorism. Among evidences used against him was a Western Union receipt for 50 bucks I sent him from Singapore to pay for rent. When I visited him in Maekelawi in 2005, he could not walk or talk as he was severely tortured. His torture ordeals was witnessed by his ones cellmateBayissa Gemechu. After Red Cross made issue about his situation, he was transferred to Kality where he resumed his study and teaching the illiterate peasant prisoners. He later scored 4.0 on his 10th grade exam. In 2006 he sent me a list of books I should send him, one of them was Mandela’s “Long Walk to Freedom”.
Ethiopia: Widespread violations feared in clampdown on Muslim protests
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC STATEMENT
25 July 2012
AI Index: AFR 25/010/2012
Amnesty International is concerned over the fate of scores of Muslim protestors arrested in Ethiopia during July. The arrests took place in the context of ongoing protests against alleged government restrictions on freedom of religion in the country. The detainees are at risk of torture and other ill-treatment, and there have been numerous reports of beatings in detention against those arrested. Some detainees have been held in incommunicado detention since their arrest without access to family members, often in unknown locations. Amnesty International is further concerned at widespread reports of the beating of protestors during
demonstrations, and other examples of excessive use of force by the police during the arrests and the dispersal of protests, resulting in many injuries to protestors.

Ethiopia After Meles
I. OVERVIEW
The death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who had not been seen in public for several months, was announced on 20 August 2012 by Ethiopian state television. The passing of the man who has been Ethiopia’s epicentre for 21 years will have profound national and regional consequences. Meles engineered one-party rule in effect for the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and his Tigrayan inner circle, with the complicity of other ethnic elites that were co-opted into the ruling alliance, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). The Front promised freedom, democracy and ethnic devolution but highly centralised, tightly controls the economy and suppresses political, social, ethnic and religious liberties. In recent years, Meles had relied ever more on repression to quell growing dissent. His successor will lead a weaker regime that struggles to manage increasing unrest unless it truly implements ethnic federalism and institutes fundamental governance reform. The international community should seek to influence the transition actively because it has a major interest in the country’s stability.

Mr. MellesZenawi and his party EPRDF took over power by military force 21 years ago backed by external forces. For the peoples in Ethiopia, thelast 21 years were continuation of war, conflict, gross human rights violation, imprisonment, disappearances, killings and starvation.
The death of Mr. Zenawi may be a big relief for the majority of the peoples in Ethiopia whose human rights have been continuously and grossly violated for the last 21 years by this dictator and his henchmen. He was one of the worst and wicked dictators that the Empire has ever experienced by the majority of the Empire’s subjects. His departure may create the opportunity for a democratic atmosphere to emerge that could help to peacefully settle the more than a century old conflicts.

Human right watch(Nairobi) – Ethiopia’s new leadership should commit to fundamental human rights reforms in the wake of the death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. Meles’s death was announced by the Ethiopian state media on August 21, 2012.
Ethiopia’s international partners should call on the government to support fundamental rights and freedoms in the country and a prompt rollback of repressive laws, Human Rights Watch said.

The Oromo National Liberation Struggle is Like David's Fight Against Goliath
By :Fayyis Oromia (March 25, 2012)
I think the story of David and Goliath is known to all Oromo from the different regions and religions. The story is, in short, as follows:
“The Philistine army had gathered for war against Israel. The two armies faced each other, camped for battle on opposite sides of a steep valley. A Philistine giant, measuring over nine feet tall and wearing full armor, came out each day for forty days, mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight. His name was Goliath. Saul, the King of Israel, and the whole army were terrified of Goliath. One day, David was sent to the battle lines by his father to bring back news of his brothers. David was probably just a young teenager at the time. While there, David heard Goliath shouting his daily defiance, and he saw the great fear stirred within the men of Israel. David responded, ‘who is this Philistine defying the armies of my nation?’ So David volunteered to fight Goliath.

David responded, ‘who is this Philistine defying the armies of my nation?’ So David volunteered to fight Goliath.

(CNN) -- Ethiopia's prime minister is "recovering well," a spokesman said Wednesday, amid frenzied speculation about the health of the usually visible leader, who has not appeared in public for two months.
Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, 57, came to power two decades ago and is considered a strong force in the frequently volatile horn of Africa.
He has not appeared in public since June, and the secretive nation has released little information about his whereabouts, prompting rumors and opposition claims that he is dead or facing a life-threatening illness.

NEW GOBANA DACCHES
14 August 2012
Gobana Dacche was a traitor for allying with the northern Ethiopian(Abyssinia) to conquer the Oromo land. In allaying with Menelik II, " The African Hitler", Gobana surrendered Oromia to the hands of bloody colonizers from the northern part. Due to Gobana Dacches historical uncorrected mistake, Oromia have lost and keep losing the life of millions of her children, and natural resources. We have got just only shame, humiliation, harassment, oppression, massacre and hunger from Gobana's evil deeds. He was just a toll to cause destruction of Oromo people and Oromia in the hands of cruel enemy. He was used by Menelik II once and then thrown away from the line. Gobana Dacche was simply a "use and throw" for cruel Menelik II.
Professor Mohammed Hassan translates the following song as an example of Oromo expression that Gobana Dacche betrayed his own people:

OROMIA: FAILURE TO LEARN FROM HISTORY
By Leenjiso Horo (August 14/2012)
It is important to note that, for centuries, the Oromo lived in the Horn of Africa as a free, independent and sovereign nation. During those centuries, they developed a democratic republican form of political system, known as the Gadaa system. It was a system of political and military collective leadership. For centuries, they lived under this system in unity. Under this system, they drew their national power from their democratic governance, their unity, their collective Gadaa leadership, their natural and human resources, their defense army and art of war, and their determination to live as a free and independent nation. However, by the beginning of the 19th-century, internal changes began to take place within the Oromo society. This was a period in which the nation began undergoing a state of political commotion.
The Goal of Oromo People
August 09, 2012
The Oromo people remained independent until the last quarter of the nineteenth century. But in the last decade of the nineteenth century , the Oromo people failed under harsh and back ward colonizers of European-helped Abyssinia(Ethiopia). Since then Oromia has lost and losing millions of unreplaceable and precious children, men and women. Oromia also missed a lot economically, ecologically, geographically, socially ,and even forced to live in all rounded crises of life full of hunger, death and destruction. All these horrible life of the Oromo people is the result of being under the hands of harsh and cruel colonizers of Abyssinia.

STRONG OR WEAK THERE IS ONLY ONE OLF/ Oromo Liberation Front/
By Ibsaa Guutama
Aug 9, 2012 (gubirmnas) – Because of the conceptual strength of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) campaign against it from many directions, defamations, efforts to break it into pieces, did not materialize; they could not erase it from Oromo hearts, it rather went on rejuvenating. But in practice the leadership did not demonstrate strength the organization requires. It lacked the essential energy. There is also weakness in economic aspect. To generate that also demands stronger organization and leadership. That means the OLF mission is waiting for all round stronger organization and leadership. As an organization it did not put in place methods for correcting defect that might be encountered. It was realized very recently that problems eating it from inside started from the head down. There were undetermined members of the leadership. Therefore it demands not slicing and baking a little bit for once appetite but conducting a revolution on oneself. The vision of independence is the stored hope of Oromo people it cannot be extinguished until it gets the chance of being realized. The Oromoo always remember that they are part of Africa from time immemorial. African unity can be formed by its free peoples not dictators.

The Africa Day was celebrated colourfully on 26 and 27 of May 2012 in Dublin, Ireland. Many African embassies and communities across the country came together in open space to show their culture, identity and the best of their communities, their countries and their continent at large. The Association of Oromo Community in Ireland was, not onlyone of these communities on the event, but also the shining star of Africa and its people. Starting from the first day of the event, the community’s members and leaders were there at the event and were very busy explaining, demonstrating the Oromo heritage, as well as participating in different competitions at the event.THE OROMO PEOPLE AND OROMIA

After deliberating on the current situation in Ethiopia and carefully observing the level of struggle against the current regime and the apparent confusion created by the sudden disappearance of Meles Zenawi, the “strong man” ruling Ethiopia for the past twenty one years; Being apprehensive of the current regimes attempts to delude the peoples in Ethiopia regarding Zenawi’s fate and their attempt to maintain the statusquo in order to continue their ruthless suppression of all peoples in Ethiopia; After considering, the current disarray and lack of political will of some opposition groups to embrace the political and social changes that Ethiopia has undergone in the last forty years and their archaic adherence to political precepts that are no longer tenable in the 21 century such as negating the rights of nations in Ethiopia to self‐determination; After considering the opportunistic utterances of some sectors of the opposition regarding the aftermath of future change of polity in Ethiopia, which neglects the long struggle of the oppressed peoples in Ethiopia who were subjugated, disenfranchised and virtually enslaved even before the current regime came to power in Ethiopia; Being cognizant of the fact that some sectors of the opposition are aspiring to reversing the historic acceptance in principle but not in practice by the present regime of the rights of all nations and nationalities under Ethiopian rule for their inalienable right to exercise their selfdetermination; Asserting that the oppressed peoples who had fought with their blood and still keeps fighting successive oppressive regimes in Ethiopia will never allow the reversal of their revolutionary gains;
