The Goal of Oromo People

 August  09, 2012

The Oromo people remained independent until the last quarter of the nineteenth century. But in the last decade of the nineteenth century , the Oromo people failed under harsh and back ward colonizers of European-helped Abyssinia(Ethiopia). Since then Oromia has lost and losing millions of unreplaceable and precious children, men and women. Oromia also missed a lot economically, ecologically, geographically, socially ,and even forced to live in all rounded crises of life full of hunger, death and destruction. All these horrible life of the Oromo people is the result of being under the hands of harsh and cruel colonizers of Abyssinia.

After Oromia became a colonized nation, the Oromo people started to lead the "dark age " phase of life in the history of the Oromo people. Starting from the beginning til today the Oromo people didn't gave up to try to fight for freedom against colonizers and for sure will not stop to fight colonizers until freedom will be a reality. Even though success was so far from the Oromo people in the colonial era, the Oromo people's interest in freedom and having a free nation helps us to keep fighting for our deserved freedom.

The Oromo people's unchanged and deserved interest for freedom and independence plus the bitterness of the colony resulted in Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). This shows Oromo Liberation Front is by itself the true fruit of the Oromo peoples interest and struggle for freedom. OLF is a result of the sucrifice of Oromo people and responsible to achieve the very important goal of Oromo people. There for, some one can't talk about changing the primary goal of Oromo Liberation Front for individual purpose. OLF belongs to the Oromo people and responsible to accomplish the primary and deserved goal of the Oromo people , that is self-determination of the Oromo people. Individual interest has no place and stage in OLF. Those who want to accomplish their own personal goal have to go out of the line and try their own best but must not stand on the cross road of Oromo struggle for freedom .

As a responsible leader, member, and supporter of Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), we have responsibility on our shoulder to keep focus our time, energy, resource, etc on the primary deserved goal of our people. The Oromo Liberation Front responsible bodies and all members and supporters at home and abroad share such an important responsibility to accomplish for our home land, Oromia. Individual agenda has no place if we are going for common goal of our people.

When we state the goal of OLF, we must not forget that we are talking about the goal of the Oromo people struggle. One can't separate the Oromo people and OLF from one another. Oromo Liberation Front is our leader towards our primary goal as Oromos, that is self-determination of the Oromo people. OLF is our leader towards where we belong, Oromia, our home land.

Goal setting ideally involves establishing specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-targeted objectives. There for, the Oromo people has stated its goal clearly 40 years ago as a core objective of Oromo Liberation Front. That objective can be read as :

"The fundamental objective of the the Oromo liberation movement is to exercise the Oromo peoples' inalienable right to national self-determination to terminate a century of oppression and exploitation, and to form, where possible, a political union with other nations on the basis of equality, respect for mutual interests and the principle of voluntary associations."

Who can change this? It is only up to the Oromo people and Oromo people. As individual or minority group, some one has no moral and logical back ground to try to change or destruct the Oromo people's struggle primary goal. It is not smart matter to try to snatch the goal of Oromo people's in their fight for deserved freedom. The Oromo people's quest for their right to self-determination is just and legitimate. There for, as Oromo people who fights for deserved freedom , our goal for independence is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely-targeted. Achieving this difficult but important goal requires unity, focus, long-term diligence, maximum effort, common understanding, efficient effort and force in military as well as diplomacy. This involves recognizing our people's goal than individual or team member interest.

In recent years, in Oromo Liberation Front, individuals with their own individual interest have tried to out shine over their own people's goal. That is wrong and that is crime against the Oromo people's fight for freedom. Resolving individual conflicts democratically and prioritizing the primary goal of our people must be the leading principle in the OLF's all level of leadership. Designing optimal team-collaboration and effective operations are the key on the way to success. If some one is interested in his/her own individual goal than his/her people's goal for freedom, there is a way out of the line. But it is so smart not to line with the enemies of the Oromo people on the other side. Some one who gave up fighting for his/her people must not cooperate with enemies to hit back. Enemy is an enemy , contribute for your people if you can , but don't contribute against your people if not.

As a single most dominant national group in the horn of Africa, we got to stand in unity for our goal that is self-determination of the Oromo people. Knowing and understanding clearly our primary goal helps us to avoid failure in long lasting fight for the freedom of our people. Know it and decide, go for it , we deserve to be free, Oromia deserve to be free.

Victory for Oromo people
