The reports that #Oromo congregants at the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Inxoxo congregation were locked out today are deeply disturbing. We’ve translated two dispatches that were sent to OPride.com by two different members of the church as follows:
“Conflict at the Mekane Yesus church are not new. There’s been splits and reunions over the years. What seems new, however, is the reasons for the latest incident. For years, particularly since the 2010 reunification, there have been two major Sunday services at the Inxoxo church: the Afaan Oromo and Amharic services. It is true that the Amharic leaders always had the upper hand in running the show at the congregation. But for the last five years, the Afaan Oromo service took place on Sunday mornings from 2-4 local time. However, last weekend Oromo Churchgoers and elders were greeted with a sign posted on the door, announcing some upcoming changes in which they were *reportedly* not consulted.
“The new directive, written in Amharic noted, starting on October 4, the Afaan Oromo service have been moved to Saturdays at 9AM. This is preposterous because, as per the Mekane Yesus doctrine — unless it is a special program — Sabbath and the church service is on Sundays. Earlier today, when the Oromo worshipers arrived, they found the entrance doors locked and they were denied entry. The congregants waited outside until it was time for the Amharic service. When the Amharic service leaders arrived, the Oromo congregation told them that the decision was unacceptable and asked them not to proceed.
“Eventually, police was called and ordered everyone out of the building. Elders from both services have been chosen to sort out the differences. It is important to note that this is part of an ongoing, concerted effort to eliminate the Afaan Oromo service. The Amhara leaders at the church seem unimpressed by the surge of proud Oromo congregants, who worship with Afaan Oromo gospel and are colorfully dressed in Oromo cultural attire. It is also symptomatic of the larger fear of resurgent Oromo nationalism among Amhara elite.
