Slow but Sustained - Ethiopian Muslims' Struggle for Rights Continues

September 30, 2013 | Think Africa Press | By Joris Leverink*
ANALYSIS
For more than twenty months, the Ethiopian Muslim community has been protesting for their constitutional rights to be respected.

Muslims in Ethiopia have been protesting against government interference in religious affairs for more than twenty months. But ever since the violent crackdown by Ethiopian security forces on peaceful protestors during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations in Arsi last month, the Muslim community has been wary of organising new rallies.

Whereas some observers believe that the movement has lost its momentum, activists engaged in the protests vow to continue their peaceful resistance until their demands are met.

Saudi-Yemen Barrier Blocks Ethiopian Migrants

September 30, 2013 | Voice Of America

A popular path for Ethiopians to work as illegal household help in Saudi Arabia has been blocked by construction of a 75 kilometer-long three meter-high concrete-filled pipline, that is supposed to eventually span the entire 1,800 kilometer Saudi-Yemen border.

The Saudi-Yemen Barrier is designed to discourage illegal entry by Yemenis and other foreigners from sneaking across the border for work, to stop smugglers bringing in weapons for extremists and to end the shipment of qat – a plant whose leaves are a mild but illegal stimulant – to eager Saudi consumers.

Water Wars: Egyptians Condemn Ethiopia's Nile Dam Project

September 27, 2013 | National Geography  | By Peter Schwartzstein in Cairo

As the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam takes shape, tempers rise.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam along the Nile has
ignited a water debate between Egypt and Ethiopia.
"Ethiopia is killing us," taxi driver Ahmed Hossam said, as he picked his way through Cairo's notoriously traffic-clogged streets. "If they build this dam, there will be no Nile. If there's no Nile, then there's no Egypt."

Projects on the scale of the $4.7 billion, 1.1-mile-long (1.7-kilometer-long) Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam often encounter impassioned resistance, but few inspire the kind of dread and fury with which most Egyptians regard plans to dam the Blue Nile River.

Sakharov and the fight for a free press in Ethiopia

September 27, 2013 | Committee to Protect Journalists  |  By Mohamed Keita*

In 1968, Andrei Sakharov braved censorship and personal risk in the Soviet Union to give humanity an honest and timeless declaration of conscience. That same year, Ethiopia's most prominent dissenter, Eskinder Nega, was born. In January 1981, a year into Sakharov's exile in the closed city of Gorky, Reeyot Alemu, another fierce, Ethiopian free thinker, was born.

Libya: Thousands of Refugees in Life-Threatening

The following is a statement from the Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA)
HRLHA Urgent Action

September 24, 2013

For Immediate Release

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) has learnt through its correspondents that hundreds of thousands of refugees in Libya, most of whom were from the Horn of African countries such as Ethiopian and Eritrea, are in a very dangerous situation after they were evicted from their original refugee camps in Benghazi, Libya where they stayed for the past three years. The eviction took place following the infiltration and assault of the refugees by who were described as workers of the Libyan Red Crescent on the 13th of September, 2013. The assault included beating and stabbings by knives. Those who broke out of the shelters to run away from the assaults were met with Libyan armed forces that were stationed around the camps prior to the starting of the assault. Then, the refugees were forced out of the camp on allegations that they attempted to instigate disturbances in the city, and taken to remote area known as Alshatti.

Kenya: Police Alert at Border With Ethiopia

September 24, 2013 | The Star

Security has been tightened at the border of Ethiopia and Kenya following the Westgate attack. Marsabit county commissioner Isaiah Nakoru said the security apparatus in the region have been upscaled and the patrols intensified to ensure that the suspected attackers don't flee out or into the country. He said all police chiefs have been ordered to beef up their security checks and ensure no one gets in or out of the country.

Ethiopia Could Face ‘Large-Scale’ Attacks From Somalia’s Al-Shabaab – Medrek (Ethiopia's government Opposition)

September 23, 2013 | Shabelle net

Addis Ababa — An official from Ethiopia’s biggest opposition group, Medrek, said on Saturday that Ethiopia could face a similar attack to this weekend’s assault on a shopping mall in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi that has killed at least 68 people and injured hundreds others.

Ethiopia and Kenya both have deployed their armies to neighboring Somalia to address what they said was a threat to regional security caused by the al-Qaeda-linked Somali Al-Shabaab movement, the group which has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Ethiopia’s Future: Self-Rule of Golden Oromia With or Without Shared-Rule of Great Oromia

September 22, 2013 | By Fayyis Oromia*

More than enough is written about the past and the future of the currently existing Ethiopian empire. Here is a short repetition from my present point of view. Ethiopia is only a fraction of the so called Cushland (Great Oromia = land of proto-Cush) in the northeastern part of Africa, in which several Cushitic nations are found. Certain parts of these nations in the northern part of the empire are already Abyssinized due to the cultural and linguistic influence of the Semites from the Middle East; some in the southern part are Bantunized due to the contact with certain Bantu nations; and the others in the eastern part are a bit Arabinized due to the cultural and religious contact with the Arab world. But, at the core of the empire is a relatively unaffected part, now called Oromia, still preserving the main values of the proto-Cush, the part which I would like to give the name Golden Oromia, parallel to the original home of the Cushites, known as Nubia (land of Gold).

The Right to Protest: ETHIOPIAN REGIME REPRESSION

September 20, 2013 | Counter Punch.org | By GRAHAM PEEBLES*

They speak of democracy, but act violently to suppress dissenting voices and control the people through the inculcation of fear: they ignore human rights and trample on the people, they are a tyrannical wolf in democratic sheep’s clothing, causing suffering and misery to thousands of people throughout Ethiopia. The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) government repeatedly scoffs at international law and consistently acts in violation of their own Federal constitution – a liberal document written by the regime to please and deceive their foreign supporters. They have enacted laws of repression: the widely condemned Charities and Societies (ATD) law (CSO law) and the Anti Terrorism Declaration, which is the main tool of political control, together with the ‘Mass Media and Freedom of Information Proclamation’ they form a formidable unjust arsenal of government control. Freedom of the media (which is largely ‘state-owned’) is denied and political dissent is all but outlawed.

Environmental Disaster and Cultural Genocide committed by TPLF on Oromo People

At this juncture, I appreciate also any feedback and critics if my analysis is bogus, exaggerated, or I am just turning paranoid.

The enemy of our struggle

September 16, 2013 | By Bariisoo

The Oromo people (nation) as a nation existed as subjects and exist as subjects but will not exist as subjects until forever. The factors that forced us to be subjects are: physical enemies and abstract enemies.

The abstract enemy that fought us and continued to fight us is poverty, ignorance, disease, identity crisis, ill-bred compartments, cowardness, corrosion and corruption at societal and leadership level. Abstract enemy is the derivative of physical enemy and natural calamities.

Aid agencies accused of ignoring rights abuses in Ethiopia

September 13, 2013 | THE LANCET   | By Samuel Loewenberg

Several major aid agencies have been blamed for not addressing rights violations in Ethiopia, including those linked to their programmes in the country. Samuel Loewenberg reports.

The World Bank, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) have consistently failed to act on allegations of human rights abuses in Ethiopia, including ones that are tied to their aid programmes, according to new reports by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Oakland Institute, a California-based think tank.

Remembering the past to advance the Oromo struggle forward

September 08, 2013 | By Kadiro A. Elemo*

The Oromo people, the single largest ethnic group in the Horn of Africa, with the third widely spoken language in Africa after Arabic and Hausa, were incorporated into the Ethiopian Empire in the second half of the 19th century by successive conquests undertaken by Abyssinian emperors. Prior to the conquests, the Oromo, a nation of the free, elected their leaders democratically according to the Gadaa system, one of the egalitarian systems they contributed to the world civilization. The British diplomat Walter Plowden remarked that ‘Gadaa is superior among republican systems’ and Gadaa government “as pure as a republic can exist.” Similarly, an Eritrean anthropologist, Asmarom Legesse, described Gadaa as “the most astonishing and instructive turns [in] the evolution of human society.” Bulatovich, who traveled through the Oromo land, described Oromo’s republican system as “the peaceful, free way of life, which could have become the ideal for philosophers and writers of the eighteenth century [Europe], if they had known of it.”

Public Rally By Oromo Communit In UK For Human Right and Freedom, Protest Against the Ethiopian Killer Regime- September 13, 2013

PUBLIC RALLY FOR HUMAN RIHGT & FREEDOM
The Oromo Community in the UK organized a public protest (rally) to protest and expose crimes against humanity by the current regime in Ethiopia and seek justice for the victims. This protest aims to inform the
international community not only to stop aiding the perpetrators but also hold them accountable for planning and carrying out sustained crimes against humanity on the Oromo people. Over the past two decades thousands of unarmed civilians: students, human rights activists, political figures of all age have been subjected to uninterrupted extrajudicial killings, mass arrests, tortures, kidnapping and disappearances etc. The recent killing of Tesfahn Chemeda, who was kidnapped in Kenya after being extradited back to Ethiopia, is one tragic example. Alemayehu Gerba was gunned down in the same way as Tesfahun while in prison. The continued harassment of Muslim community and killings of people in Kofele and other parts of Ethiopia demonstrated the scale of government brutality against the people and its obsession to control and lead through its agents even in the faith groups which has already been proved in the Orthodox church since the regime assumed power.

Aayyoo Makka remembers the battle of Dhombir

September 03, 2013 | By Abdullatif Dire* | OPride

“It was a grievous experience,” said Makka Bariso somberly recounting her unspeakable ordeals under successive Ethiopian rulers starting with emperor Haile Selassie.

Makka — or as she is affectionately called Akkoo meaning grandmother in Oromo — is the oldest wife of the late Hajii Adam Jilo Webo, a prominent figure in the Oromo struggle for freedom. Webo died in exile in 2005 after decades of resistance against three Ethiopian regimes, including the current one.

Aayyoo Makka, who came to the U.S. in 2007, now lives with her grandson in Minneapolis, thousands of miles away from her homeland, which she profoundly misses. Born sometime in 1910s in the Bale zone of Oromia region, Akkoo spent her early childhood herding cattle when not tending to house chores. Like most women of her generation, Makka, who did not attend school, married Webo at an early age. She led a good and happy life amid her extended family network, since they had a lot of cows, camels, and goats – thanks to the abundance of grazing land in the area.
