Oromo Year in Review 2014: Weighing the Bright and the Dark Side

December 31, 2014 | Oromo Press
Year of Massacre, Protest and Impunity
For the Oromo, the year 2014 has been simultaneously a year of success stories and tragedy because of the peaceful protests that took place in Oromia from April to June 2014, leading to the massacre of over 200 Oromo students and the imprisonments of thousands. The year is drawing to an end without Ethiopian officials and security personnel responsible for the killings being held accountable locally and internationally. Year of impunity for TPLF ruling elites who went on genocide spree in Oromia. Oromo students were protesting what was termed the “Addis Ababa Master Plan,” a land grabbing genocide plan calculated to evict millions of Oromo farmers from their ancestral land. Many places in Oromia saw many deaths in connection with Oromo Protests. Oromo Protests by Qeerroo Oromiyaa, Oromiya’s youth movement, remains the prominent highlight of the year.

Ethiopia 2014 Trafficking in Persons Report from Office To Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, US Department Of State

December 31, 2014 | US Department of State, Office To Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons

Ethiopia is a source and, to a lesser extent, destination and transit country for men, women, and children who are subjected to forced labor and sex trafficking. Girls from Ethiopia’s rural areas are exploited in domestic servitude and, less frequently, prostitution within the country, while boys are subjected to forced labor in traditional weaving, herding, guarding, and street vending. The central market in Addis Ababa is home to the largest collection of brothels in Africa, with girls as young as 8-years-old in prostitution in these establishments. Ethiopian girls are forced into domestic servitude and prostitution outside of Ethiopia, primarily in Djibouti, South Sudan, and in the Middle East. Ethiopian boys are subjected to forced labor in Djibouti as shop assistants, errand boys, domestic workers, thieves, and street beggars. Young people from Ethiopia’s vast rural areas are aggressively recruited with promises of a better life and are likely targeted because of the demand for cheap domestic labor in the Middle East.

Saudi Star Agricultural Development plans to pump $100 million into a rice export project in Gambella region of Ethiopia despite allegations of human rights violations surrounding the “villagization” program under which the land has been taken from indigenous Anuak pastoralists to lease to foreign investors.

The company is owned by Mohamed al-Amoudi, who was born in Ethiopia to a Saudi father and an Ethiopian mother. Al-Amoudi made a fortune from construction contracts to build Saudi Arabia's national underground oil storage complex. Now a billionaire many times over, al-Amoudi has invested heavily in Ethiopia where he owns a gold mine and a majority stake in the national oil company.

Ethiopias Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MoLSA) Lift Year-Long Travel Ban to Middle East

December 29, 2014 | The Reporter Ethiopia, a Pro-TPLF press | By Yonas Abiye

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MoLSA) has announced on Thursday that it is going to lift the travel ban that it imposed on domestic workers who travel to the Middle East.

The ban which was ordered in October 2012, eventually led to the barring of work permits of agencies that facilitate existing travels for work, and other destinations popular for overseas employment.

Speaking before the House of Peoples' Representatives (HPR), Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Abdulfetah Abdulahi Hassen told MPs that the government decided to lift the ban after it made bilateral agreements on the safety of citizens with the governments of Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan.

He also indicated that the government had to take time to deliver trainings and proper education for domestic workers who seek to travel to the Middle East.

December 29, 2014 | The Reporter Ethiopia, a Pro-TPLF press | By Kaleyesus Bekele

Speaker of the House of Peoples' Representatives, Abadula Gemeda, replaced Addisu Legesse, senior government official, as board chairman of the Ethiopian Airlines as of December 8.

Reliable sources at the Ministry of Transport told The Reporter that Addissu requested the Minister of Transport, Workneh Gebeyehu, to release him of his post as board chairman of the national flag carrier due to personal reasons. Sources said Workneh, who accepted the request, appointed the Speaker of the House, Abadulla Gemeda, as the new board chairman of Ethiopian Airlines. Arkebe Oqubay, former mayor of Addis Ababa and senior government official, is the deputy chairman of the board of directors of the airline.

Addissu, former deputy prime minister and minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, joined the board of directors of Ethiopian in 2010 when the former board chairman Seyoum Mesfin left his position to head Ethiopian diplomatic mission in China. Seyoum Mesfin, former minister of Foreign Affairs, served as board chairman of the airline since 2001.

Ethiopian journalists must choose between being locked up or locked out

December 29, 2014 | Mission Journal By Nicole Schilit/Journalist Assistance Associate*

a newspaper report on a study criticizing independent
publications. (CPJ/Nicole Schilit)
A sharp increase in the number of Ethiopian journalists fleeing into exile has been recorded by the Committee to Protect Journalists in the past 12 months. More than 30--twice the number of exiles CPJ documented in 2012 and 2013 combined--were forced to leave after the government began a campaign of arrests. In October, Nicole Schilit of CPJ's Journalist Assistance program and Martial Tourneur of partner group Reporters Without Borders traveled to Nairobi in Kenya to meet some of those forced to flee.

The group of reporters, photographers, and editors we met had all been forced to make a tough decision that has affected them and their families--a life in exile or prison. All of the journalists spoke to CPJ on condition of anonymity, out of concern for their safety. During meetings to discuss their cases, one of them told us: "I hope one day I can bring my family. Maybe in the future. I want to secure myself first. Now is not secure."

Opposition Figure, Professor Merera Gudina, Downplays Reports of Job Dismissal

December 29, 2014 | Sudan Tribune

* "The university didn't pay my salary since June while other employees were paid," Professor Merera Gudina
An Ethiopian opposition leader on Sunday dismissed reports alleging he has been fired from his job at the government-run Addis Ababa University.

Local media outlets reported that the leader of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, Merara Gudina, who chairs also the coalition of opposition parties MEDREK was fired from his academic professorial position.

The reports indicated that Gudina, an associate professor of political science at Addis Ababa University, was fired for his political views and due to the growing popularity he gained among university students in the build-up of the upcoming general elections.

Why Anti-OMN Whiners Should Keep Their Mouth Shut

December 28, 2014 | Gadaa.com | By Abraasaa Dirree*

The problem with people who blab a lot is that they don’t have very good memories. They blab so much and boast so much, and huff and puff so much that they can’t possibly remember all the blabbing, boasting and puffing.

This is the predicament the anti-OMN Poster Boy finds himself in at the moment. Devoid of courage to address the real issues requiring structural explanations, he and few of his cohorts resorted to focus on events – who did what to whom. As a result, the calibrated attack on the OMN missed the opportunity to help us achieve more accurate, more insightful, and more empowering view of reality. He and his cohorts were wrong in essence and in substance. The planned “knockout punch” at the time of launch did not materialize. The recent hullabaloo is not getting any traction. So, the Poster Boy resorted to non-stop whining with complete and reckless abandon, because of the following reasons:

Gang rape spurs calls for reform in Ethiopia

December 17, 2014 | Al Jazeera | By Jacey Fortin
Women's rights activists are demanding change after Hanna Lalango, 16, was gang-raped on a bus and left for dead.
Lalango Hayesso and Tirfe Welde Senbet, Hanna's parents, mourn beside her photograph
Inside a gated home on the western outskirts of Ethiopia's capital, a picture of Hanna Lalango is framed in a wreath of flowers just beginning to wilt around the edges.

The 16-year-old girl died on November 1, about a month after she entered a public mini-bus and was gang-raped by the strangers on board.

Hanna's story is strikingly similar to a tragedy that took place in India two years ago, when another young woman boarded a bus, was raped by the passengers, and died from her injuries. That incident spawned a mass movement calling for an end to violence against women and impunity for perpetrators, making international headlines and sparking protests across the world's most populous democracy.

Haile Fida Kuma: the Father of Qubee Afaan Oromo

December 17, 2014 | Oromedia.net

Dr Haile Fida Kuma has made an outstanding contribution to the development of Oromo national orthography. He was one of the pioneers who attempted to shade fresh on the history of the Oromo, the right of the Oromo people to speak, read and write in Afaan Oromo . His first research paper was published in 1972, on Tatek, theoretical Journal of Ethiopian Studies in Europe entitled ‘Languages in Ethiopia: Latin or Geez for writing Afaan Oromo.’ He further published in 1973 Oromo Grammar book entitled ‘ Hirmaata Dubbi Afaan Oromo’: Haile Fida, et al. The books were as a result of his long-time study of the Oromo language and problems of Oromo orthography.

Ethiopia's Fuel Gauges read Empty: Oil Market Declines; Consumers Pay the Price

December 16, 2014 | Addis Fortune; Ethiopian Pro-Government Media

Ahmed Mohamed, 27, is an assistant driver of a heavy truck which transports ethanol, coffee and wood from Shakiso, Bale and Jimma. He was at Kobil oil station’s Gotora branch at 7pm in the evening, very tired and irritated by the long hour queue at the oil station. He was close to getting into a fight with another driver because of queue cheating. His vehicle consumes 60 litres of petroleum, worth 1,100 Br per day. However, since December 9, 2014, his car stopped functioning due to the petroleum shortage throughout the city, making him lose over 6,000 Br of daily income.

NBE to Print Banknotes in Ethiopia

December 16, 2014 | Addis Fortune; Ethiopian Pro-government media

Bank plans to cut foreign currency spending by printing banknotes in Ethiopia

The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) is on the process of establishing its own banknotes and security printing factory to print cash locally.

The Bank announced a tender two weeks ago to hire an international consultancy firm to conduct a feasibility study for the printing plant on the state owned daily newspaper, The Ethiopian Herald.

The main aim of planting the factory is to save the foreign currency that the country is spending to print banknotes in foreign countries. The other reason is to centralise the printing of banknotes in one place, according to a senior official from the Bank.

Government Eyes to Federalize Shashamane-Hawasa Corridor of Ethiopia

Major cities in Oromia are administered in what is termed as "special zone." Jimma and its surrounding is special zone; Addis Ababa and its surrounding is special zone; Adama and its surrounding is special zone. Now the federal government of Ethiopia is considering to create one for Shashamane because, sources disclose, the city is becoming home for ''nations and nationalities'' and economically very significant to be left for the regional government. In fact, the federal government wants to take over the entire corridor of 25km between Hawasa and Shashamene. And both Sidama Zone or SNNPR and Oromia have not been consulted yet. The plan will land on table presumably after 2015 election and EPRDF secures majority in the house that is already decided at the council of ministers in their last successive meetings.

Ethiopia: Release protestors, stop crushing political opposition [AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC STATEMENT ]

December 12, 2014 | Amnesty International Public Statement

On 5 and 6 December, security services in Addis Ababa arrested an estimated 90 people during attempts to stage a demonstration by a coalition of nine opposition political parties. The arrests are the latest manifestation of the authorities’ hostility towards the political opposition ahead of the general election scheduled for May 2015. The Ethiopian authorities must ensure the immediate and unconditional release of those arrested for peaceful participation in, or the organization of, the demonstration, and all others imprisoned in Ethiopia for the peaceful expression of their political opinion.

December 11, 2014 | The Gurdian.com | By Rediet Wegayehu*

One day in early October, Hanna Lalango, 16, did not return from school to her home in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, at the usual time. Her father Lalongo Hayesso was worried about his youngest daughter.

“We waited for her at her usual time … but we had to wait for 11 days to hear that she had been abandoned on the street. She was incapacitated and couldn’t even get up,” said Hayesso. His daughter had been abducted, gang-raped and left for dead. Hanna was not able to get to hospital until 12 days after her attack, where she was treated for traumatic gynaecological fistula and other injuries. She died on 1 November.

In Defense of Oromo Institutions

December 11, 2014 | Gadaa.com | By Bakalchoo Barii*

It has been over 125 years since the exemplary Oromo Gadaa System and its egalitarian values – where everything under the sun was valued dearly as the work of the Creator (Waaqaa) and everyone deserved a fair and equal treatment before the law – were banned and replaced by a barbaric and authoritarian rule of the Abyssinians. It took only forty odd years for the Oromo Nation to re-claim some of its lost cultural values, its language and its history under the pan-Oromo Nationalism spearheaded by the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF).

ETHIOPIA: Outbreak of Deadly Disease in Jail, Denial of Graduation of University Students

HRLHA – URGENT ACTION

December 10, 2014

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) would like to express its deep concern over the outbreak of a deadly disease at Gimbi Jail in Western Wollega, as a result of which one inmate has already died and sixty (60) others infected. HRLHA strongly believes that the very poor sanitation in the jail, absence of basic necessities, and denial of treatment after catching the illness have contributed to Mr. Yaikob Nigaru’s death. HRLHA fears that those who have already caught the disease might be facing the same fate. It is well documented that particularly inmates deemed “political prisoners” are deliberately subjected to unfriendly and unhealthy environments and, after getting sick as a result, are not allowed access to treatment until they approach or reach the stage of coma, which is when recoveries are very unlikely. HRLHA considers it one way of the systematic eliminations of alleged and/or perceived political dissidents.

December 10, 2014 | Vice News | By Johnny Magdaleno*

The brutal kidnapping and gang rape of a teenage student in Addis Ababa has spurred a movement against gender-based violence in Ethiopia and throughout the country's diaspora communities.

Sixteen-year-old Hanna Lalango was abducted by a taxi driver and a group of passengers in Ethiopia's capital on October 1 after she boarded the driver's vehicle on her way home from school, according to local media reports, activists, and other sources who spoke with VICE News about the incident. A few days later, Lalango's sisters received a call from the kidnappers, who offered to arrange a meeting to negotiate the release of their hostage.

Security Message for U.S. Citizens in Ethiopia: Security Reminder

December 08, 2014 | U.S Embassy Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The U.S. Embassy informs U.S. citizens that political rallies or demonstrations may occur without significant notice throughout Ethiopia, particularly in the lead up to Ethiopian national elections in May 2015. Such rallies and demonstrations may be organized by any party or group and can occur in any open space throughout the country. In Addis Ababa, applications for permits to conduct rallies are often requested for Meskel Square or Bel Air Field. Please remember that even public rallies or demonstrations intended to be peaceful have the potential to turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should, therefore, stay alert and avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

THE OROMO PEOPLE CANNOT DO ANYTHING ALONE: ORO-ETHIO OR ETHIO-ORO PLAGUE

December 06, 2014 | By Waaqee Ji'oo Garbii*
Preliminary remark
This article examines the scourge ‘The Oromo People Cannot Do Anything Alone’ that often causes nausea in the Oromo national struggle for national self-determination. In doing this, I briefly begin by embarking on the ideology of some apolitical Oromo Christians and some non-Christian Oromos and even some Oromo politicians who promote the so called ‘Oro-Ethio’ or ‘Ethio-Oro’ political game. My purpose in writing this article is not to defile any individual or group or it is not to undermine the grievances of the oppressed Oromo people rather to discuss about and reflect on if the Oromo people really cannot liberate themselves from century lasting Abyssinian colonization. Therefore, I humbly ask the readers to freely argue for or counter argue the claims I made in this article.
