Addressing Post TPLF Fears

December 27, 2015 | By Dr. Ebissa Ragassa

Fear is an inability to imagine possibilities…

There is great fear reverberating among Ethiopianist/unionist that the sudden fall of TPLF will lead to Ethiopia’s disintegration. What Ethiopia may become after the fall of TPLF is uncertain and unknown as such it has made Ethiopianist to be hesitant to join Oromo’s peaceful struggle. While it is prudent to be cautious during uncertainty, remaining silent will neither preserve Ethiopia’s unity nor prevent it as feared. The strategic decision taken by Ethiopianist to remain a bystanders at the time when their participation is greatly needed to overthrow a heinous regime will only add to TPLF’s longevity rather than shorten it.

TPLF Leaders will be Responsible for the Bleeding of the Oromo Nationals

December 27, 2015 | Statement of Oromo Liberation Front (OLF)

asxaa_oromoThe bitter struggle the Oromo people are waging to protect their rights and to maintain their very existence as a nation and the sacrifices they are paying to defend the declaration war and an act of terrorism currently perpetrated on them by the TPLF-led Ethiopian regime is extremely heavy.
As the regime displays its utmost contempt to the Oromo people and intensifies the war of aggression to exterminate the Oromo race, the determination of the Oromo people is getting more and more strengthened and they are intensifying their peaceful protest by the day.

Ethiopian opposition figures arrested over land protests

December 27, 2015 | REUTERS | By Aaron Maasho

ADDIS ABABA, Dec 25 (Reuters) - Ethiopian police have arrested two senior opposition members on suspicion of inciting weeks of protests against government plans to set up a new economic zone near the capital that would displace farmers, their party leader said on Friday.

The Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) says 87 protesters have been killed by police since demonstrations broke out this month in Oromiya region, in the country's worst civil unrest for a decade.

On Dec. 15, a government spokesman said police had a list of five people who had died during the protests, but casualties could be higher. Officials have yet to announce an updated number.

Oromo Protests Shed Light On Ethiopia’s Long-Standing Ethnic Tensions

December 27, 2015 | SAHARA REPORTERS | BY SORCHA AMY THOMSON & MACARENA ESPINAR LÓPEZ
Why is Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group also one of the most oppressed? As anti-government demonstrations spread across the Oromia region, and the death toll continues to rise, the Oromo people are asserting their long neglected struggle. Labelled as terrorists and extremists by the government, the diaspora are reaching to the international audience for support.

What Is Behind the Oromo Rebellion in Ethiopia?

December 22, 2015 | By Yohannes Woldemariam (Associate Professor of International Relations and Environmental Studies at Fort Lewis College)

The Ethiopian government is now faced with unprecedented rebellion from the Oromo ethnic group, consisting 35% of the Ethiopia's population, which it disingenuously claims is inspired by terrorism. The immediate pretext is the Addis Ababa Master Plan encroaching and displacing Oromo farmers, but this masks a deeper grievance which has been brewing for at least two decades under this regime, and for over a century under successive highland Ethiopian rulers. In the following, I will try to provide some context and offer some analysis of the danger Ethiopia and the region are facing.

Ethiopia arrests journalist after channel reports on protests

December 22, 2015 | Committee To Protect Journalists (CPJ)

Nairobi, December 22, 2015--The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on authorities in Ethiopia to release news anchor Fikadu Mirkana. Fikadu, who works for the state-run broadcaster Oromia Radio and TV, was arrested at his Addis Ababa home on Saturday morning, according to news reports.
CPJ could not determine the reason for Fikadu's arrest. It comes as Oromia Radio and TV has, in recent weeks, covered protests against a plan to expand the Ethiopian capital, in a move that campaigners say would displace hundreds of thousands of farmers, according to news reports. Dozens of protesters have been killed during clashes with police during the unrest in the regional state of Oromia, according to a Human Rights Watch report.

Ethiopia: Lethal Force Against Protesters; Military Deployment, Terrorism Rhetoric Risk Escalating Violence

December 19, 2015 | Human Rights watch

(Nairobi) – Ethiopian security forces have killed dozens of protesters since November 12, 2015, in Oromia regional state, according to reports from the region. The security forces should stop using excessive lethal force against protesters.

Police and military forces have fired on demonstrations, killing at least 75 protesters and wounding many others, according to activists. Government officials have acknowledged only five deaths and said that an undisclosed number of security force members have also been killed. On December 15, the government announced that protesters had a “direct connection with forces that have taken missions from foreign terrorist groups” and that Ethiopia’s Anti-Terrorism Task Force will lead the response.

'Stop the killing!': farmland development scheme sparks fatal clashes in Ethiopia

December 18, 2015 | The Guardian | By William Davison
As government plans to build on Oromo farmland around Addis Ababa spark widespread protests, an increasingly brutal crackdown by the government has sparked fears that excessive force may become the norm

The protesters wrapped the two bodies in blankets and plastic sheeting. On top, they placed pieces of paper with the names of the dead, alongside the bullet casings from the weapons that had just killed them. Then the chanting began: “There is no democracy, there is no justice.”

ODF Statement on the Killing of Oromo Protesters

December 17, 2015 | Oromo Democratic Front (ODF)

In the last four weeks furious clashes have occurred between peaceful Oromo protesters and Ethiopian security forces. Protests erupted in opposition to the government’s Addis Ababa Master Plan, which protesters fear would expand the capital into the towns and rural areas situated in the outlying zone of Oromia.
Students, urban dwellers, and peasants across Oromia are peacefully demonstrating rejecting the violent imposition of the so called Master Plan, which, if implemented, will lead to the mass eviction of poor Oromo farmers from their ancestral land to make way for the capital’s expansion. Moreover, the protests highlight the thorny and complex relationship, both historical and contemporary, between the Ethiopian state and the Oromo society. It reveals the deep-rooted struggle over identity, resources, and rights.

December 17, 2015 | Press Release from ONLF

The type and scale of the crimes it has perpetrated on the people of Oromia, Ogaden and other ethnic groups for the last 24 years of the regime are well documented by prominent international human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. ONLF sends its condolences to the families of Oromo Students who have been murdered by the oppressive tyranny TPLF regime. Ethiopia: The Masterplan Behind the Masterplan

December 16, 2015 | kweschn.com

The purpose of this article is to analyze what has been happening in the Oromia region so far. It is an attempt to help those who may still be confused about what is going on.
If you are still assuming that the protests in Oromia are about the Addis Ababa Masterplan, then you are only scratching the surface. Even if the EPRDF government decides to rescind the Masterplan overnight, there will be other protests against other issues, as Dr. Merera of the opposition group recently mentioned, because the people in the region have countless bottled up grievances that the government has failed to address.

Ethiopia: Anti-terror rhetoric will escalate brutal crackdown against Oromo protesters

December 16, 2015 | AMNESTY International Press Release

Protesters have been labelled ‘terrorists’ by Ethiopian authorities in an attempt to violently suppress protests against potential land seizures, which have already resulted in 40 deaths, said Amnesty International.
A statement issued by state intelligence services today claims that the Oromia protesters were planning to “destabilize the country” and that some of them have a “direct link with a group that has been collaborating with other proven terrorist parties”.
“The suggestion that these Oromo - protesting against a real threat to their livelihoods - are aligned to terrorists will have a chilling effect on freedom of expression for rights activists,” said Muthoni Wanyeki, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes.

How The Oromo Protests Are Exposing Ethiopia’s Longstanding Political Vulnerabilities

December 15, 2015 |  BY HASSEN HUSSEIN AND MOHAMMED ADEMO

At least 40 people have been killed, hundreds wounded, and thousands detained in more than three weeks of uprisings in Ethiopia’s Oromia state, the largest of nine linguistic-based states. The Oromo people make up close to 50 percent of Ethiopia’s population of 100 million.
Protesters primarily oppose a draft master plan that, if implemented, will expand the jurisdiction of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, into Oromia. Dozens were killed last year in similar protests when authorities first introduced the controversial Addis Ababa and Surrounding Oromia Special Zone Development Plan or the Master Plan.

THE GREAT UNRAVELING: A POLITICAL ENDGAME IS UNDERWAY IN ETHIOPIA

December 15, 2015 | OPride | Written by J. Bonsa
The finale of the Ethiopian regime’s tragic political drama is being played out on the streets of Oromia, Ethiopia’s largest state. Oromo students have been ratcheting up tensions in ongoing protests that began in early November. The protesters oppose the encroaching of Addis Ababa, a federally administered city, into Oromia’s jurisdiction, which has already evicted hundreds of thousands of Oromo farmers from their ancestral lands.
The dust has not yet settled to clearly predict what happens next, but the endgame appears imminent. It is important to start taking stock of what has been happening over the last two and a half decades.

#OROMOPROTESTS AND ETHIOPIA’S DROUGHT MAY HEIGHTEN THE END TPLF’S RULE

December 15, 2015 | OPride | By Kurabachew Duba

Today, in the 21st century, when mankind marches to form a permanent colony on Mars, Ethiopia is still looking for the breadline. It is shameful but true. Successive Ethiopian regimes have failed the people.
The United Nations and international aid agencies put the number of people needing emergency food aid at 15 million and growing. The regime in Addis Ababa did not waste time to blame El Niño, a global weather condition that causes a rise in sea surface temperature in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. That’s a dubious claim.

Sidama National Liberation Front (SNLF): Unconditionally Stop Violence against Peacefully Protesting Oromo Civilians in Ethiopia

December 15, 2015 | Statement form SNLF
snlfSince end of November 2015, the Oromo high school and university students and wider Oromo civilians across the Oromia region have staged peaceful protests against the Finfinnee “Master Plan” that will incorporate the city and the surrounding areas in the Oromia region inhabited by the Oromo farmers. The students, the Oromo people, and local Oromo opposition political parties condemn the “Master Plan” as a plan for a land grab that will lead to displacement of millions of the Oromo farmers plunging them into poverty and destitution. The Oromo people claim that hundreds of farmers have already been displaced by the scrupulous development plans that have no regard to the indigenous Oromo inhabitants surrounding the city.

Silent Forces behind the Addis Ababa Master Plan and the Downside of Article 49 (5) of the FDRE Constitution

December 15, 2015 | By Iddoosaa Ejjetaa
ethiopiaWhy Article 49 (5) of the FDRE Constitution was suspended for the last 20 years?
TPLF is not the only force who is pushing the Master Plan. The neo-neftenyas, neo-liberals (pretenders of individual right, borderless, diversity blinded), those who have been against multinational federalism or ethnic based federalism are silent forces behind the Addis Ababa Master Plan, which is basically a land grabbing policy disguised as integrated development plan. Although the TPLF is at forefront who is spinning the gear, this should not turn our eyes blind and ears deaf to the mischievous behavior of the neo-neftenyas or pro-Menilk Addis Ababa or pro-unitary state groups. They are one of the silent forces behind the Addis Ababa expansion and the suspension or delay of Article 49 (5) of the FDRE Constitution (1995), which provided special benefits for the State of Oromiyaa. Recently, some power-seeking diaspora based individuals as usual crying for political alliance with the old masters who had sworn to crash whenever possible the Oromo aspiration for self-determination, Oromo identity and the State of Oromiyaa. We should also say NO to such undesirable moves, but yes to the Peoples’ Alliance.

Modest Suggestions towards a way out of the Crisis... for the Brutal regime in Ethiopia

December 14, 2015 | From the Facebook of Tsegaye Ararssa

What is preventing the officials to scrap the master plan? Call an emergency Caffee meeting, repeal the urban development proclamation (which creates conditions of possibility for expropriatory master plans including the AA Master Plan), make a resolution on the the latter, set up an independent commission of inquiry towards bringing perpetrators to justice, restoring the victims, creating positive peace through political acts of apology, accountability, and reconciliation.

Ethiopia: Outcry As Oromo Protests Turn Violent

December 13, 2015 | DW | By Merga Yonas
Opposition groups say security forces have killed 20 people in three weeks of protests over a government re-zoning plan. Members of Ethiopia's largest ethnic group view the plan as a further infringement on their rights.
"Dubbiin lafaa dubbii lafeeti!" ("The matter of land is a matter of the bone.") When describing the sensitivity of the so-called "Addis Ababa master plan," Bekele Naga, the Secretary-General of the Oromo Federalist Congress party (OFC), does not mince his words. "The constitution of the country proclaims that the land belongs to the people," Naga told DW. But he believes this is being violated: "The Ethiopian government has been engaged in land grabbing, leading to cultural genocide [of the Oromo people]."

Letter from Heart Broken Oromo-American Sister to President Obama: From $840 US aide to Oromo students’ slaughter

December 12, 2015 | SEENA OROMIA
Dear President Obama!
Have you heard the news in Ethiopia? President Obama, have you seen our sorrow? Can you feel our pain? Can you hear our anger? I hope you can! It was not too long ago… that I among thousands of fellow Oromos campaigned for you. I knocked door-to-door, walked miles and made calls throughout the night. Like millions of Americans. I longed for you to win the election. Like all others who lost hope in their governments and discriminated by the system, I prayed and crossed my fingers for you to become the president. In you, I saw my dream and hope. I believed you were the person, the chosen leader that will stand with the people that is left behind for far too long. On a cold Tuesday evening, I waited among thousands others to watch you give the defining speech that moved us so much. You said, “to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared…out of many, we are one….”

Long-Sought Oromo Self-Rule Restored in Gindeberet, Gindo, Guliso as Oromo Protests Spread Across Oromia

December 13, 2015 | Gadaa.com

LiberatedOromia2015_1
On Saturday, December 12, 2015, media outlets reported that Gindeberet and Gindo joined Guliso (all in western Oromia) as freed localities in Oromia. It is to be remembered that, earlier this week, protesting citizens of Guliso dissolved what the protesters called the local go-between administration of the Tigrean-dominated Ethiopian Federal government. Another town named Babich has also been partially liberated by its citizens; however, to impose power through terror, the Ethiopian Federal police killed at least two Oromos in “execution style” from close range in front of the protesting crowd, according to reports (viewer discretion advised: photos of the executed Oromos attached here). The reports added that the dissolution of the local go-between administrations will have a strong cascading effect across Oromia in the coming days and weeks as the Oromo protests spread to every corner of Oromia.

Why Are Students in Ethiopia Protesting Against a Capital City Expansion Plan?

December 12, 2015 | Oximity.com* | By Endalk

Over the past two weeks, students in Ethiopia’s largest regional state, Oromia, have been protesting against a government plan to expand the area of the capital, Addis Ababa, into Oromia.

Reports suggest security forces used violenceincluding live ammunition to disperse crowds of peaceful demonstrators in the compounds of universities in Oromia.

According to Human Rights Watch, at least three students were killed and hundreds were injured across the region as security forces used excessive force to disperse student protesters. Other reports put the number of students killed up to ten. Although protesters are primarily university students, in some instances, high school and primary school children were also reportedly involved in intense confrontations with government forces.

OLF STATEMENT ON THE PLANNED KENYAN AND ETHIOPIAN JOINT MILITARY OPERATIONS.

December 09, 2015 | Oromo Liberation Front (OLF)

Recently, the Kenya and Ethiopia governments have made an agreement to cooperate in waging war on the Oromo people’s liberation movement. It is very unfortunate that Kenya agrees to support the Ethiopian dictatorial regime militarily against Oromo liberation forces.
The TPLF/EPRDF has been sustained in power for nearly 25 years by governments from far and near. It has been receiving military assistance in the form of training, armament and security in addition to diplomatic and financial support. These governments continue to maintain the dictatorial regime in power, in spite of the continued opposition by the peoples under its oppressive rule.

Below in the table is the list of nine Oromo students who have been confirmed dead in the past seven days being shot at and killed cold-bloodedly by the Ethiopian armed squad of the Agazi Force:

Ethiopia: Yet Again, a Bloody Crackdown On Protesters in Ethiopia

December 08, 2015 | By Felix Horne (Researcher, Horn of Africa)

Student protests are spreading throughout Ethiopia's Oromia region, as people demonstrate against the possibility that Oromo farmers and residents living near the capital, Addis Ababa, could be evicted from their lands without appropriate - or possibly any - compensation.
Social media is filled with images of bloodied protesters; there are credible reports of injuries and arrests in a number of towns; and local police have publicly acknowledged that three students have died so far.
