Human Rights Watch : The Year in Human Rights Videos Picks Oromo Protest at the top

December 22, 2016 | By Amy Braunschweiger, Senior Web Communications Manager

The gunning down of peaceful protesters in Ethiopia. Animations depicting the devastation of Saudi Arabia’s male ‘guardianship’ system on women’s lives. From these to child brides and LGBT rights, here are the year’s most-watched videos on Human Rights Watch’s YouTube Channel.
1. When we pieced together cell phone footage showing the deaths of peaceful protesters in Ethiopia, it became by far our most-watched video this year – both in English and Amharic.

Ethiopian security forces have killed more than 400 protesters and others, and arrested tens of thousands more during widespread protests in the Oromia region since November 2015.

Ethiopia: detained journalist missing, denied access to family and medical care

December 15, 2016 | DefendDefenders.com

Ethiopian authorities should immediately disclose the location of Temesgen Desalegn, who was jailed on spurious charges two years ago, and give him access to medical care, said the Association for Human Rights in Ethiopia (AHRE) and DefendDefenders (East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project) today.
Temesgen Desalegn is serving a three-year sentence in Ziway prison on charges of defamation, incitement, and false publication. However, relatives have attempted to visit him for seven consecutive days, and been told by Ziway prison administration officials that his location is unknown. His relatives reported that they had not seen him since 7 November 2016.

Ethiopia: Social media and news websites blocked by government to prevent protests

December 15, 2016 | Amnesty International

  • Google transparency report shows dramatic drop in internet traffic out of Ethiopia on two days when at least 100 people were killed by security forces during protest
  • 16 news sites and access to WhatsApp blocked between June and October

“As far as the Ethiopian government is concerned, social media is a tool for extremists... The reality, though, is very different” – Michelle Kagari

The Ethiopian government systematically and illegally blocked access to social media and news websites in its efforts to crush dissent and prevent reporting of attacks on protesters by security forces during a wave of protests over the last year, a new report released today shows.

Research conducted by Amnesty International and the Open Observatory of Network Interference shows that between June and October this year during times of heightened tension and protests, access to WhatsApp and at least 16 news outlets was blocked, especially in the Oromia region.

Ethiopia dispatches 86 spy agents to North America and Europe

December 05, 2016 | Via #MinilikSalsawi

Ethiopia: 86 Woyane spy agents, who recently received security training in Britain and Israel, have been dispatched to North America and Europe to create confusion and disturbances among Ethiopian Diaspora communities. The spy agents will attend Diaspora getting together activities, including churches and mosques, camouflaging genuine followers. The Tigre regime in Ethiopia is targeting communities where its penetration is low or where it lacks control over.  The spying agents’ mandate is creating confusion, disturbances, focus diversions and disagreements among these communities, if possible poisoning some individuals.

Ethiopia: State of Emergency, the Empire of Chaos in Oromia

December 01, 2016 | Human Rights League of The Horn of Africa | HRLHA urgent action

The deadly protests that have rocked Ethiopia over ten months (November 2015- September 2016)  led by “Qeerroo Bilissummaa” literally, youth  for freedom against subjugation, dramatically changed  the peaceful protests into violence after the tyrannical government mercilessly massacred over 700  Oromos at the Irrecha Festival,  Oromo Thanksgiving Day on October 2, 2016. The tyrannical government of TPLF/EPRDF declared a state of emergency on October 8, 2016 to cool down the anger of the nation. However, the  declaration of a six-month state of emergency could not stop the Oromo nation from protesting. Killings, rapes, and the detaining of Oromos by the killing squad Agazi force continued unabated. Jima University students once again reignited peaceful protests on November 20, 2016 complaining that security forces entered campus at night to make arrests. Many students were taken from their campus dormitories and their whereabouts are not known. The Jima University  students demanded to know about their fellow Oromos.

Gada system, an indigenous democratic socio-political… (Ethiopia) Representative List - 2016  Film ‘The Gada system, an indigenous democratic socio-political system of the Oromo’ © UNESCO

Description: Gada is a traditional system of governance of the Oromo people in Ethiopia developed from knowledge gained over generations. It regulates political, economic, social and religious activity serving as a mechanism for enforcing moral conduct, building community cohesion, and expressing culture. Gada is organized into five classes taught by oral historians, with each having to progress through a series of grades before it can take the leadership. Men, whose fathers are members, participate. Transmission occurs within families and at school.

Ethiopia: Arrest of opposition leader an assault on freedom of expression

December 01, 2016 | Amnesty International

Reacting to news of the arrest of Ethiopian opposition leader Merera Gudina, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes, Michelle Kagari said:
“The arrest of Merera Gudina is an outrageous assault on the right to freedom of expression and should sound alarm bells for anyone with an interest in ending the deadly protests that have rocked Ethiopia over the past year.”
“This is a move that will exacerbate, rather than ease, the underlying tensions currently simmering in the country. Instead of resorting to further repression and clamp-downs, the Ethiopian government must urgently and meaningfully address the human rights grievances that are fuelling unrest.”

Ethiopia arrests top Oromo opposition politician after Europe Parliament speech

December 01, 2016 | The Washington Post | By Paul Schemm

A top opposition politician from Ethiopia’s Oromo ethnic group who criticized the country’s state of emergency at the European Parliament has been arrested, the government announced Thursday.
A colleague said police arrested Merera Gudina and three others from his home in Addis Ababa late Wednesday shortly after his return from Europe. The trip included a Nov. 9 speech to the European Parliament in which Gudina said tens of thousands have been arrested under the state of emergency in Ethiopia.

The future of Oromia doesn’t depend on what VISION Ethiopia groups think

November 20, 2016 | By Rundassa Asheetee Hundee

Just off west of Assosaa’s tip, two cultures collide. One is mine, and the other belongs to the Nu’eer or to the Anyuwaak people.  Now, go onto Wambara, turn south east and cross to Leeqaa, Guduruu, Gindabarat, Jalduu, and then back north to Jaarssoo, Garbba-Guraacha and continue northwards all the way to Wallo. There, you will enjoy songs dances that resemble the Dhiichisaa of Shaggar (centeral Oromia). A swift move toward east or south Oromia provides you with a mixture of Borana rhythm played out in Jimmaa, Iluu Abbaa Booraa and western Oromia, part of my country that some small minded men would like to call “Wallagga”.

Is Oromo fiduciary to Habesha and often demanded to confess its political strategy?

November 10, 2016 | By Falmataa Sabaa (Ph.D)
I want to supplement to the exigency of Prof. Ezekiel’s recent article entitled “The Big Debate – Beyond Assimilation and Accommodation: The Resurgence of Oromo Nationalism”. Presumptive reason as to why Prof. Ezekiel took the initiative of writing the article might have to do with the recurring pan-Ethiopianist’s requirement posed on Oromo politicians to regularly confess their political will toward Ethiopianism. Prof. Ezekiel’s articulation emanates from the difficulty pan-Ethiopianists have had to understand Oromo’s theory on land ownership and issue of national identity. Although the article is comprehensive of the domain it intended to address and derived conclusion logical, I have slightly different assumptions on the possible causes for the seemingly shift of TPLF from its goal at inception. In juxtaposition with and as a continuum to the article, I would like to avow the pan-Ethiopianists relentless effort to wrongly define Oromo’s cause and futile ambition to set limit on the scope of our political goal.

Will Ethiopia’s Year-Long Crackdown End? Need for Meaningful Reforms, Accountability

November 10, 2016 | Human Rights Watch | Felix Horne Senior Researcher, Horn of Africa

When I met 15-year-old “Meti” (not her real name), she felt her dream of becoming a nurse was over. In February, Meti and her classmates joined a protest in East Hararghe, in Ethiopia’s Oromia region, against the government’s displacement of farmers around Addis Ababa, security force abuses, and the repression of opposition voices. When security forces started shooting, she and her classmates ran; she turned to see her brother shot dead. Later that night, security forces arrested her father and two of her brothers. Then school officials informed her they were suspending her from school for her participation in the protest.

HRW: Relatives of Ethiopian Protesters Arrested, Detained

November 08, 2016 | Human Rights Watch

Twenty-five-year-old Shukri Shafe Guled comes from the Somali Regional State in Ethiopia, but has been living in Australia since 2010. In June 2016, he and other protesters gathered in Melbourne to demonstrate against the visit of an Ethiopian delegation that included the Somali Regional State president, Abdi Mohamoud Omar, known as Abdi Iley, who is accused of human rights abuses back home.
Guled explains pro-government supporters took his photograph and told him that “within 15 minutes,” they would “punish” his relatives living in Ethiopia. He says his three brothers were detained that day, and have not been heard from since.
Guled says his sister and his elderly mother were detained for about a month.

Ethiopia’s Declaration of State of Emergency on Oromia is an equivalent of Derg’s “Red Terror.” : Here is why.

October 28, 2016 | By Leelloo Sabaa
mengistu
In Ethiopian Empires’ political history, the year 1977-78 is remembered as the year when Mangistu Haile Mariam’s political power was absolutely threatened and his rule was shaken. The opponents to his power became so strong and lethal such that Mangistu was forced to declare “Red Terror” on its real or imagined enemies to its reign in Ethiopia between 1977-78. By this declaration of “Red Terror”(Mangistu’s state of emergency), Mangistu asserted that all “progressives” were given freedom of action in helping to root out enemies of his rule. Peasants, workers, public officials and even students loyal to the Mangistu regime were provided with arms to: assassinate, kill, imprison and loot as they wished. Militia attached to the Kebeles, the neighborhood watch committees were given freedom to train their gun on anyone with whom they have even personal but no ideological disagreement. All people allied to Mangistu went into killing spree and even children were not spared. During these years of “Red Terror”, Amnesty International estimated that up to 500, 000 to 2,000,000 people were butchered and thousands were left on the street for their body to decompose. In May 1977, the Swedish general secretary of  Save the Children Fund estimated too that “1000 children have been killed and their bodies are left in the streets and being eaten by wild hyenas.” Parents of the deceased were asked to collect the bodies of their loved ones by paying money for the bullet wasted killing their children.

The Oromo Leadership Convention and the Future of Ethiopia

October 22, 2016 | By Ezekiel Gebissa*

Questions about Oromo loyalty to Ethiopia persist though they are stale, condescending and meaningless.  The sort of questions that Tedla raises have been litigated for nearly three decades. The issue of secession, for instance, was basically settled when federalism was chosen as a solution and secession was enshrined in the Ethiopian Constitution as a right in principle. For those who have remained in the mindset of the ancient regime, however, all Oromo political moves, even a call for a convention, must be scrutinized for some hidden desire for secession.  To be sure, no one Ethiopian group has the moral authority to administer the litmus test of loyalty to Ethiopia. It is unfathomable that Oromos have to answer such questions especially in the wake of what the sacrifices of generation of Oromo to liberate Ethiopia from tyrannical rule.

UN rights office calls for independent inquiry following numerous deaths at an Ethiopian festival

October 07, 2016 | United Nations (UN) News center

Expressing concern at increasing unrest in several Ethiopian towns following deaths of a number of people in unclear circumstances in the country’s Bishoftu town, the United Nations human rights arm has called on protesters to exercise restraint and on security forces to conduct themselves in line with international human rights laws and standards.
“The protests have apparently been fuelled in part by a lack of trust in the authorities’ account of events, as well as wildly differing information about the death toll and the conduct of security forces,” Rupert Colville, a spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) told journalists at a regular press briefing at the UN Office at Geneva (UNOG).

The genocidal massacres of Oromos at the Irreechaa Fesival: The lies of the Tigre-led Ethiopian government

October 05, 2016 | By Asafa Jalata, PhD, The University of Tennessee

On October 2, 2016, the Tigre-led Ethiopian regime massacred more than seven hundred Oromos and injured hundreds more at Irreechaa, the Oromo national holiday of thanksgiving held in Bishoftu in which millions had gathered. During the Irreecha festival, Ethiopian security forces shot live ammunition into the crowd and fired tear gas, although they claimed that the lives lost were due to a stampede. Western media have joined in this claim, spreading inaccurate information about the tragic events of this day. However, Oromo victims know what happened to them and they are telling their truth. They have used videos, pictures, and social media to release accurate information.

Empire of bleeding and thrombosis kept under bad physicians and wrong remedies

September 16, 2016 | By Dr. Baro Keno Deressa*

By Dr. Baro Keno Deressa
The Oromo people are managed to unite under their vanguard organization OLF to fight for the same purpose (eradicating colonization). The formation of unity under one organization and the bravery act of Oromo people brought changes in Ethiopian empire. The Patriotic act and the clear message of qube generation guided by qeerroo leadership from Oromia get a good response from all nations of Ethiopian Empire (Amharas, Gurages, Afars, Ogaden, sidama, Benishangul, Gambellans, innocent Tigreans ….etc).
Many Oromo nationalists criticize the colonial system of Ethiopian Empire. The core value of Ethiopian empire was not build on the will and equality of all nations. Nations are a product of the human will and imagination and the institutions that sustain their collective efforts. The key values of federalism, democracy, and inclusive government have not been sufficiently consolidated as core values for their nations. Full or real freedom, they believe, will come with freedom of all. Eradicating all forms of colonial system of domination is crucial (political, economic, social, military) in order to accomplish freedom of all nations.

Ethiopia: The Time for Change is Now!

September 16, 2016 | Oakland Institute | By: Elizabeth Fraser

Last weekend on the eve of two large celebrations in Ethiopia—the Ethiopian New Year and the beginning of Eid al-Adha festivities—the Ethiopian authorities pardoned approximately 1,000 people, 135 of whom had been charged under the country’s draconian Anti-Terrorism Proclamation. Amongst those released were leaders of theEthiopian Muslim community, who have been in jail since July 2012 when they were detained for protesting against governmental interference in religious affairs.1

UN human rights chief ‘deeply concerned’ over Ethiopia abuses

September 13, 2016 | www.reprieve.org

The UN’s human rights chief has used a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council to criticise Ethiopia for a recent crackdown on opposition which has included the kidnapping and sentencing to death of a British man, Andargachew ‘Andy’ Tsege.
Speaking this morning at the opening session of the Council, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said: “While Ethiopia has made impressive gains in terms of economic development, we are deeply concerned about repeated allegations of excessive and lethal use of force against protestors, enforced disappearances, and mass detentions, including of children, as well as by worrying restrictions on civil society, the media and opposition.”

NO TO EXTORTION AND OTHER FORMS OF TERRORIZING BUSINESS PEOPLE IN OROMIA

September 13, 2012 | By Dr. Tsegaye Ararssa

We have received reports from various cities and towns of Oromia this morning. The reports indicate that the regime is taking measures to"punish" businesses in Oromia for taking part in the boycott last week. In towns such as Naqamt and Ambo, it's reported that the regime is seeking to collect a "penalty" of ETB 10,000 on every Bajaj service that was not in operation last week, including those who were not working for personal reasons.
This is illegal.
Beyond and above being a plunder enforced through state apparatus, this is an extension of the regime's terrorist practices to the economic sphere. It's a politically motivated vindictive act inflicted on our people merely because they exercised their right to take part in the boycot.

#OromoProtests A Call for Economic Boycot Measures against TPLF

#OromoProtests A Call for Boycot Measures
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Building on its gains so far, the Oromo protests movement is entering a new phase. The unrelenting killing and brutal repression of the regime continues unabated. This is calling for a change of tactics.

Accordingly, the Oromo protests is now calling for a week long, nation-wide boycott of markets and trade activities in this holiday season (of Ethiopian new year and Eid el-Arafaa).

The Bravest Olympian in Rio — Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa Risks Death But Speaks Out About Killings of Oromo Protesters in Ethiopia After Earning Olympic Silver in Marathon

August 21, 2016 | Letsrun.com
RIO DE JANEIRO — Plenty of storylines emerged from the 2016 Olympic marathon. Eliud Kipchoge stamped himself as the greatest marathoner of all time by winning the race in 2:08:44. Galen Rupp earned the bronze medal to cap a stellar meet for the United States distance squad. But those are sporting achievements. What Ethiopia’s Feyisa Lilesa did today goes far beyond running.
As Lilesa crossed the finish line in 2:09:54 to earn the silver medal, he threw his hands above his head to form an “X”. Afterward, at the post-race press conference on a dais 50 yards from the marathon finish line, he spoke slow, powerful, chilling words, explaining the gesture was meant to demonstrate his solidarity with his Oromo people in Ethiopia. Amnesty International reports that at least 97 Oromo were killed inpeaceful anti-government protests earlier this month. This is the latest in a string of protests that Human Rights Watch estimates have resulted in over 400 deaths in all. In addition to the killings, many more have been arrested and detained by the government.

Ethiopia’s Bloody Crackdown: The Case for International Justice

August 18, 2016 | By Felix Horne, Senior Researcher, Horn of Africa

Ethiopian security forces gunned down at least 100 people a week ago in the bloodiest weekend in the ninth month of anti-government protests. Unlike previous protests, which have been largely confined to the Oromia region, the protests on August 6 and 7 were also in the northern Amhara region. Altogether at least 500 people have been killed since November and tens of thousands have been detained during the largely peaceful protests.

Ethiopia: TPLF to stage-manage and carry out a “terrorist” attack, intelligence sources warn

August 18, 2016 | By Engidu Woldie

Sources close to ESAT disclosed that the TPLF regime in Ethiopia is prepared to carry out deadly attacks that mimics the work of terrorists in cities across the nation and use that as an excuse to squash the growing popular resistance against the regime in the name of fighting Al Shabaab terrorists.
The sources said the TPLF intelligence and security has selected five locations – Adama, Dire Dawa, Gondar, Bahir Dar and Shashemene – to target public places and higher institutions of learning. The plan was to use Somali speaking individuals from the Ethiopian Somali region to carry out attacks at the selected locations, according to the sources.

OLF is Spirit

August 18, 2016 | By Mathias Gudina

OLF is Spirit, OLF is a Movement and OLF is 40+ million people:

  • If you think OLF is dead, you are wrong because OLF lives in the hearts and minds of Oromo people.
  • If you think OFC is not OLF, you are wrong because OLF lives in OFC hearts and minds,
  • If you think ODF is not OLF, again you are wrong, because it lives in ODF hearts and minds;
  • If you think KWO is not OLF, you are wrong, because it lives in KWO hearts and minds;
  • If you think OPDO is not OLF, you are wrong because majority of OPDO members have OLF in their hearts and minds.
