TPLF Accuses OPDO of Secessionism

The Gulele post
September 29/201

As a sign of the escalating attack on OPDO, a pro-regime newspaper Sendeq alleges that the OPDO is resisting TPLF’s interference because it harbors a secessionist agenda. Citing unnamed sources, the paper claims that those who complain about the process and outcome of the succession and those who are opposed to TPLF interference in OPDO’s internal organizational affairs are the “ones infested with OLF’s ideology, and want to break away Oromia.” It is ironic that Bereket Simon, whose motherland Eritrea broke away from Ethiopia, has the nerve to try to gain political capital by accusing OPDO of secessionism.

OPDO says NO to TPLF’s interference, for the second time in post Meles Ethiopia

The gulele post
September:26/2012

The OPDO central committee that met this past week failed to elect a replacement for its ailing party chairman and president of Oromia, Alemayehu Atomsa. It is the second time that such an attempt to elect a new leader has been adjourned without success.  During the first round that took place mid-August in Adama, the TPLF attempted to impose Aster Mamo. But she failed to garner even one third of the vote. The boiling confrontation was halted when Meles’ death was announced.

Ethiopia: jailed journalists, opposition leader property confiscated

The Africa Report
September: 26/2012

The Ethiopian Federal High Court has ordered the property of a jailed Ethiopian journalist and opposition party leader to be confiscated.

The decision to confiscate Eskinder Nega's property, according to the Ethiopian Ministry of Justice, comes after a request made by federal prosecutors.
However, the courts ordered that a villa house registered under Nega's name and another residential house, inherited from his parents, as well as an automobile registered under his wife's name, not to be sold or transferred to a third party.

Washington / Mon 24/2012

(Reuters) - Government restrictions on the Internet have risen over the past year around the world as regimes use violence against bloggers and turn to censorship and arrest to squelch calls for reform, a new report from a U.S. advocacy group has found.

Pakistan, Bahrain and Ethiopia saw the biggest rollbacks in Internet freedom since January 2011 and were among the 20 countries out of 47 assessed by Freedom House that declined in their rankings.

Why Europe should speak out about Ethiopia’s human rights

By : Nicolas Beger
September 24/2012
Nicolas Beger

On 25 July, the European Union adopted its strategic framework on human rights and democracy and appointed Stavros Lambrinidis its first special representative for human rights, seeking to “enhance the effectiveness and visibility of EU human rights policy”. It’s now time to translate policy into action. Ethiopia is a prime example, with its deteriorating human rights record. The recent death of former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, whose leadership was characterised by cracking down on dissidents and dismantling the independent media, provides the EU with an excellent opportunity to change its policy on Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Land Giveaway: "Reflective of the TPLF Policy"

By: Graham Peebles /September 24/2012/
“What’s yours is mine; what’s mine’s my own.”
It is a colonial phenomenon, appropriate land for the needs of the colonists and to hell with those living upon the land, indigenous and at home. Might is right, military or indeed economic. The power of the dollar rules supreme in a world built upon the acquisition of the material, the perpetuation of desire and the entrapment of the human spirit.
Africa has for long been the object of western domination, control and usury, under the British, French, and Portuguese of old. Now the ‘new rulers of the World’ large corporations from America, China, Japan, Middle Eastern States, India and Europe, are engaged in extensive land acquisitions in developing countries. The vast majority of available land is in Sub-Saharan Africa where, according to The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues report, ‘The Growing demand for Land, Risks and Opportunities for Smallholder Farmers’ “80 per cent (of worldwide land) –about 2 billion hectares that is potentially available for expanded rain-fed crop production” is thought to be.

Ethiopia bans Swedish state television

The local news(Sweden): September 22/2012

The website of Swedish state broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) has been blocked in Ethiopia amid claims that the reason is their reporting of the case of journalists Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye.

According to sources contacted by SVT, the svt.se website has been down in the country since early on Saturday morning.

Persson and Schibbye were recently released from Ethiopian prison and SVT is among the news media which have reported on claims that evidence was falsified to secure their convictions on terror charges.

The struggle for independence of Oromiya vs. the struggle to maintain the Ethiopian empire: Which side are you on?

By Leenjiso Horo /June 2012/

Every Abyssinian  emperor or imperial president, or imperial prime minister has flown Abyssinian flag over Oromiya: still flying it. This flag represents a symbol of a national history and pride for Abyssinians. For Oromo, it is a symbol of colonial occupation; a symbol of injustice and humiliation. Consequently,  the Oromo are waging a war of national independence to replace the colonial flag with the flag of independent state of  Oromiya - the flag that represents Oromo values, culture, pride, history, aspiration, hope, dream, and unity.

The Offspring Of a Snake Is a Snake Too !

September 8/2012/

"The offspring of a snake is a snake too". This is originally one of a lovely Swahili proverb. It is just a biological fact in nature. A snake replaces a snake, not something different. As the old generation of snake dies out a new generation of snake exists and functions in ecological world. Therefore, as the old generations of snakes bites and inject deadly venom, the offspring supplies the same physiology too. Snakes gives snakes generation after generations in the process of reproduction. Well said the Swahili speakers, but we the Oromo people are so rich in proverbs but we can see another day for give me just for today. My intention is not to deal with proverbs or animal biology but i want to take the facts of this proverb to the current situations in Ethiopian empire, specially with the the internal struggle for power with in dictatorial regime ruling party EPRDF.

Oromo and Amhara parties of the ruling party demand the end of Tigrians’ 21 years dominance in politics

Daily nation /September 6/2012/

ADDIS ABABA, Thursday
Ethiopia’s ruling party, Ethiopian People Democratic Front (EPRDF) has delayed the appointment of a new party chief and prime minister.
EPRDF executive council members in their closed-door meeting on Tuesday disagreed on the election procedures for the appointment of new leader.
The delay posed unexpected internal political tension and power squabbling among the ruling elite. Late leader Meles Zenawi was died in hospital on August 20, 2012.

Ethiopian man threatens action over UK 'link to abuse'

BBC /September 6/2012/

An Ethiopian farmer could sue the UK government after claiming a project that received funding from Britain led to human rights abuses.

The man - known as Mr O - told his British lawyers he was evicted from his farm, beaten and witnessed rapes as part of a "villagisation" scheme.

Mr O's lawyers say the programme receives funding from the UK Department for International Development (Dfid). Dfid said it does not fund "any commune projects" in the country.

Ethiopia is among the biggest recipients of UK aid and in July 2011 received £38m ($61m) during the country's worse drought in a decade. The UK government is also one of the main partners in Ethiopia's Protection of Basic Services programme, money from which lawyers for Mr O claim is helping to finance forced resettlement.

Bereket Simon’s naked lies and propaganda

By: Abebe Geliaw /September 7/2012/

Former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi died on July 14, 2012 at St. Luke University Hospital, in Brussels, Belgium. This fact is no more news. But even after the death of the former dictator, Bereket Simon, the chief TPLF/EPRDF’s lie factory and propagandist, had insisted that the former tyrant was on holiday abroad and would be back before the Ethiopian New Year. But Behind closed doors, Bereket and the other politically orphaned cronies were at each other’s throats fighting in a vicious power struggle, which is still going on.

Summary of NOAS’s Report on Ethiopia: «13 Months of Sunshine?»

Political Oppression
Ethiopia has experienced continuing economic growth and has progressed in many fields the recent years.  However, the human rights situation in the country remains a matter of concern. Organizations focused on improving human rights are impeded.  Political opposition is subject to abuse.  Journalists who report on the state of affairs are harassed and persecuted.
With severe restrictions on political involvement and political statements after the 2005 election, the political climate in Ethiopia has become increasingly toxic.  A large number of journalists and others outspoken against the government have been incarcerated since 2005. With a very small mandate in the Parliament in the 2010 election, the opposition party has little political power to improve the political situation.

Oromo Continue To Flee Violence

Reported by :Cultural Survival Partnering with Indigenous Peoples to Defend their Lands, Languages, and Cultures
February 4/2010

Most of the world's refugees flee strife, based in part on interethnic conflict. The Oromo, one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa, are no exception. Living primarily in Ethiopia, they account for 60 percent of the country's population. The other major ethnic groups in the Ethiopian Empire are Tigrians, Somalis, and Eritreans who are fighting the Ethiopian junta for their independence. Ethiopia's ruling ethnic minority, the Amhara, however, do not recognize the Oromo (whom they call Galla) because to do so would focus international attention on ethnic conflict within the Empire. The ruling Amhara, who constitute less than 15 percent of the nation's population but have ruled since the 19th century, have been systematically driving the Oromo for their fertile lands and subjecting them to torture, imprisonment, forced conscription, and execution. At least half of the more than 2.5 million refugees fleeing Ethiopia are Oromo. Contrary to the received impression, many Ethiopian refugees are not direct victims of the border dispute between Ethiopia and Somalia, but rather of internal ethnic conflict.

OROMO AND OROMIA 101

September 3/2012/

THE OROMO PEOPLE AND OROMIA IN BRIEF

The Oromo are indigenous African people inhabiting the North Eastern part of Africa. Their country is called Oromia, which is currently under the domination of the Ethiopian colonial Empire. The Oromo are descendants of the Eastern-Kushitie group of people indigenous to the Horn of Africa, with a population of over 40 million, which makes them one of the largest indigenous peoples of East Africa. A map of the region showing Oromia within the current political boundaries of Ethiopia.

A Few Facts About Oromia

  • Oromia is the largest Regional State in the Ethiopian Empire State.
  • Oromia (also phonetically spelled as Oromiyaa)
  • Oromia has been occupied by Ethiopia (Abyssenia) for over 100 years
  • Size: 600,000 Square km (375,000 Square miles); Larger than Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, The Netherlands and France combined

Death of an autocrat: What comes next for Ethiopia?

By Kenneth Roth
August 31,2012

The death of Meles Zenawi, under whom Ethiopia made strides despite repression, highlights the need for strong democratic institutions to maintain stability.

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia, who died last week after a long illness, liked to portray his country's leadership as collective. But there was never any doubt about who was in charge.
As dictators go, he had much going for him. Stunningly smart, strategic, practical, he cared about his country and, by all appearances, resisted the kind of graft and corruption that has plagued many African nations. During his rule, Ethiopia's economy expanded significantly, and he played an important role in the wider region.

Remembering Ebbisa Addunya

By Hashim Adem /August 30/2012/

Over the last two decades, the late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s reign saw an unprecedented killing, torture, and harassment of those who dared to speak truth to power.
Seen as a threat to their power, the Oromo, Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group, paid a hefty price. Oromo students were dismissed from institutions of learning in large numbers, Oromo artists were either killed or forced into exile, thousands continue to languish in prisons across the country and many others lead a life of exile in their own homes.
