Imagine you are in an open market in little adiss ababa in 1910. The town just started. There are men and women of four type- nobilities, servants, soldiers and merchants. The market is full of Oromos. They are those from around the new town. They bring their vegitables, fruits and livestock products to sell. The servants buy. Often no translators are needed. soldiers patrol the market and collect taxes and custums fees. The collected revenue is brought to the nobilities. The servants would leave to their masters and the Oromos return to their farms. Every thing seems quite and happy.

April 15th is the Oromo Martyrs’ Day, also known as Guyyaa Gootota Oromoo. This commemorative day was first started by the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) after the executions of its prominent leaders on a diplomatic mission en routed to Somalia on April 15, 1980. Since then, this day has been observed as the Oromo Martyrs’ Day by Oromo nationals around the world to honor those who have sacrificed their lives to free Oromia, and to renew a commitment to the cause for which they had died.

Why April 15th?

Mid 1978-1979 is remembered as the period when the survival of the Oromo national liberation struggle, led by the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), was under a severe threat of extinction. It was feared that OLA units in Arsi, Bale and Hararghe would disintegrate, and their channel of connection and supplies would be cut off by the Dergue army that just recuperated from the Ethio-Somali war. Upon defeating the Siad Barre army, the Dergue turned its face on OLA. The OLA, in the fronts of Arsi, Bale and Hararghe, fought steadfastly and scored victory over the Dergue army and regrouped once again on January 1st 1980. In the wake of their military victory, OLF intensified its political struggle inside the country and abroad. The initial political victory included the persuasion of the Siad Barre government to allow the opening of OLF office in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1980, to serve as a center of consultation and deliberation between OLF political and military leaders.

Such small forces have seized towns such as Moyale several times. The porous border between Kenya and Ethiopia, lack of roads, the settlement pattern of the rural Oromo community and the uninhabited large swath of land in these corner of the country have made it very hard for the government to contain guerrilla attacks by OLF-OLA.

Ethiopia’s government is deploying cutting-edge cyber and phone surveillance technologies from China and other nations to conduct widespread spying aimed at suppressing political dissent, according to a new report.

Using modern technology from Chinese telecom giant ZTE, Ethiopia’s state telecom company has spent the last five years meshing that gear with additional spy software from European suppliers to create government surveillance tools spanning social media, phone, and Internet communications, says the report by New-York based Human Rights Watch.

Ethiopia: Telecom Surveillance Chills Rights; Foreign Technology Used to Spy on Opposition inside Country, Abroad

(Berlin) – The Ethiopian government is using foreign technology to bolster its widespread telecom surveillance of opposition activists and journalists both in Ethiopia and abroad, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.

The 100-page report, “‘They Know Everything We Do’: Telecom and Internet Surveillance in Ethiopia,” details the technologies the Ethiopian government has acquired from several countries and uses to facilitate surveillance of perceived political opponents inside the country and among the diaspora. The government’s surveillance practices violate the rights to freedom of expression, association, and access to information. The government’s monopoly over all mobile and Internet services through its sole, state-owned telecom operator, Ethio Telecom, facilitates abuse of surveillance powers.

Her husband and father were killed when clashes erupted in their home town of Malakal, she says, sitting in her cramped, hot white tent at Leitchor refugee camp in Gambella, western Ethiopia. She escaped with two of her children, but was separated from the third amid the chaos. During the 20-day walk to the Akobo border, Tongyik's daughter fell sick. "She died on the way," she says. "There was no way to get her to the hospital."

The burden of unintended pregnancy coupled with lack of information about the risks of abortion is putting the lives of young women living with HIV in danger.

Two years ago Mulunesh, a 25-year-old sex worker from Ethiopia, had an abortion, she said: "I almost died from blood loss."

"I couldn't get the [abortion] service at the same place I had my [HIV] blood test and I didn't want to share my status with others," she said. As a result she chose to go to a hidden place where a non-professional gave her some medicine to initiate the abortion. This decision almost cost Mulunesh her life.

Beloved Oromo Singer Almaz Tafara Dies

Almaz Tafara, famed Oromo singer and songwriter, died on Mar. 22 at Police Referral Hospital in Addis Ababa after long illness with blood cancer. Her daughter confirmed the news, adding the body is now being transported to Harar. She was 57.

“This is a tremendous loss,” said Kadir Said, who produced an album with Tafara in 1986, in a phone interview from Minneapolis, Minn. “Almaz was a multitalented singer with an exceptional voice that lit up the room.”

Such people are robbed of their humanity and identity through systematic harassment, intimidation, unlawful detention, extra judicial killing and disappearances by the leaders who transformed themselves into creators of human life or lords. The largest oromo nation in Ethiopia through the 22years of TPLF/EPRDF repressive leadership has turned into a nation sobbing in the dark. One does not need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out. All it takes is a closer look at any Oromos in the face. The story is the same on all the faces: fear, uncertainty, and an unquenchable thirst for freedom. The disturbing melody of the sobs in the dark echo the rhythmic desire to break free from TPLF dictatorial shackles.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- A rights group says that Ethiopia's government regularly listens to and records the phone calls of opposition activists and journalists using equipment provided by foreign technology companies.

Human Rights Watch said in a report Friday that the foreign equipment aids the Ethiopian government's surveillance of perceived political opponents inside and outside the country.

A major international initiative aimed at promoting transparency in the extractives industry is coming under harsh criticism for accepting an application from Ethiopia, despite significant ongoing legal restrictions on the country’s civil society.

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), a standards programme based in Oslo, had declined a previous application for candidature from Ethiopia, in 2010. The previous year, the Ethiopian government had passed a law widely seen as repressive, and the EITI board stipulated that the country’s application would be deferred until that law was struck down.

(New York) – A major global initiative to encourage governments to better manage natural resource revenues should reject Ethiopia’s bid for membership due to its harsh restrictions on civil society, Human Rights Watch said today.

The governing board of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is expected to make a decision about Ethiopia’s candidacy at its next meeting, on March 18 and 19, 2014, in Oslo. EITI was founded in 2003 to strengthen governance by increasing transparency over revenues from the oil, gas, and mining industries. Itsmembers include countries, companies, and civil society representatives.

IFJ Appeals for Release of Somali Journalist Jailed in Ethiopia

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has stated that the guilty verdict and prison sentence given to veteran Somali journalist, Mohamed Aweys Mudey, is unacceptable and appealed to Ethiopian authorities to quash his sentence and release him with immediate effect. 

According to IFJ affiliate, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), Mudey has been sentenced to 27 years in prison under Ethiopia's Anti-terror law. Ethiopian prosecutors reportedly accused him of having information on Al-Shabaab operations in Ethiopia and charged him for participating in terror activities.

The Oromo Community in the Trondheim, Norway, in cooperation with OLF, Trondheim, and Oromo asylum seekers, in Norway organized a public protest (rally) to protest and expose crimes against humanity by the current TPLF regime in Ethiopia against Oromo nationals. They showed togetherness by standing for human right.

It was around 11:00 when the gathering started in Trondheim, Norway. There was around 100 people who gathered at Trondheim Torg, to say "NO" to torturing and human right violations by the Ethiopian Regime against peaceful Political opposition groups, journalists, Oromo political activists and other politically concerned people.

Remembering P.T.W. Baxter, renowned anthropologist and pioneer of Oromo studies

Paul Trevor William Baxter, who spent nearly six decades studying the Oromo, has died this week in a hospital in Stockport, England, his grandson Mark Baxter confirmed to OPride on Tuesday.

Baxter is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Pat, his son Adam as well as four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.His elder son, Tim, unfortunately predeceased him.

Baxter began his anthropological study in the early 1950s as a graduate student, combining academic analysis, field research and unconventional insights about imperial Ethiopia into his work. In 1978, Baxter published his seminal article “Ethiopia’s Unacknowledged Problem: the Oromo” in the esteemed British Journal African Affairs. As his long time friend and colleague Bonnie K. Holcomb, Senior Research Associate at George Washington University’s Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies explains, “with that act, he lent his intellectual and moral support as an established and respected scholar to those of us who were struggling to be heard as we confronted Ethiopianist scholarship which was exceedingly resistant to Oromo studies in those days.” Baxter’s undeniable arguments solidified the exigency of Oromo scholarship and marked a turning point for scholars focused on this systematically ignored group.

Empire Federalization as a political scheme to undermine the Oromo struggle for independence

Introduction

The purpose of this article is two folds. On one hand, it is to make a distinction among the forms of federalism; and on the other, to underscore that federalism is a wrong political answer to a colonial question.  Hence, from the outset I would like to state that empire federalization is against the right of colonized nations to self-determination, and so it is against the colonized people’s legitimate yearning and aspirations for freedom, national independence, and statehood. Federalism of the Empire-State of Ethiopia is hostile to the necessity of establishing independent Democratic Republic of Oromiyaa. Hence, to suggest Ethiopian empire’s federalization, including colonized Oromo people in it, is tantamount to a roadblock in the path of the Oromo struggle for national liberation.

“ዕርቅና ሰላም፤ የሕይወት ቅመም” በሚል አርዕስት የጻፉትን ጽሁፍ ካየሁ በኋላ፣ ትምህርት መማር ብዙዎችን የማይለውጥ መሆኑን ተረድቻለሁ:: ልክ ከ18ኛ ክ/ዘመን በፊት ያሉ ሰዎች የሚያስቡት ዓይነት፣ የወረደ ጽሁፍ በ21ኛ ክ/ዘመን ከፕ/ር አልጠበኩም:: በድሮ ዘመን ይኖሩ የነበሩ ሰዎች ከመካከለኛ ምስራቅ የመጣውን ሃይማኖት መቀበል፣ በራሱ ሥልጣኔ ይመስላቸዉ ነበር:: የድሮ ሰዎች ጥሩ አማርኛ የተናገረ “የሰለጠነ”፣ ጥሩ አማርኛ መናገር ያልቻለ “ኋላ ቀር” ብለው ያስቡ ነበር:: የ21ኛ ክ/ዘመን ፕ/ር ለዚያውም በምዕራቡ ዓለም የኖሩ ፕ/ር ይህንኑ ሲደግሙልኝ ታድያ ለምን አልገረም? ገና “‘የመሬት ላራሹ’ ጩኸት” ሲሉ ነው፣ እኝህ ሰውዬ ፊውዳል ናቸው ማለት ነው ብየ የተጠራጠርኩት:: ለማንኛውም፣ እስኪ የፕ/ሩን ፅሁፍ ይዘት ወደ መገምገም ልመለስ::

ፕሮፌሰር ነኝ ባዩ ጌታቸዉ ኃይሌ ከዚህ በፊትም መልስ አርጋዉ ጋሜ በሚል ጽሑፉ ውስጥ ስለ ኦሮሞ ብዙ ዘላብዶ እንደነበርና ተመጣጣኝ መልስ እንደተሰጠዉ አስታዉሳለሁ።

አሁንም በአድስ መልክ ኦሮሞ ላይ ዘመቻ መክፈቱንና በአበሾች ኢንተርኔት መረብ አማካኝነት ተሰራጭቶ አገኘሁ። ስለዚህ እኔም ስለ ጽሑፋቸዉ ትንሽ የምለዉ ኣለኝ።

አንባቢዎቼ እንዲረዱልኝ የምፈልገዉ በክፍል ሁለት የጠቃቀስኩት ታሪክ መሰረቱ የዐፄ ሚኒልክ ሰራዊት ሰለባ በመሆን ከምባታዉ ሓዲያዉ ሲዳማ ወላይታና ሌሎች ብሔር ብሔረሰቦች በሙሉ ከመሬታቸዉ ተፈናቅለዉ ገባር በመሆን ለሽያጭ ስደተኛ ተደርጎ ነበር። ነገር ግን በሁለተኛ ዙር የኢጣሊያን ወረራ ጊዜ በአብዛኛዉ ህዝብ ወደ ይዞታዉ ተመልሶ ነበር። በመሆኑም በዐፄ ኃይለ ስላሴ ከእንግሊዝ መልስና የአገሪቱ አገዛዝ ጊዜ ወደ ይዞታቸዉ ተመልሰዉ የነበሩ የተጠቀሱት ብሔሮች በንጉሱ ሹመኞችና የሃበሻ ሰፋሪዎች በድጋሚ ከይዞታቸዉ ይነቀላሉ። ይህን ድርጊት ለንጉሰ ነገስቱ እንዲያመለክቱ የሀገር ሽማግሌዎችና የጎሳ መሪዎቹን ከነ እጅ መንሻ ጭምር ወደ አዲስ ኣበባ ይልካሉ።

OSGA Invited to the UN to report on human rights abuses

HCH is working in conjunction with the Oromia Support Group of Australia (OSGA), one of our long standing community partners, to raise urgently required funds toward a unique opportunity to present serious allegations of human rights abuses in Ethiopia, at the highest level; the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

Human rights organisations have long been reporting human rights abuses committed by the Ethiopian government, which include rape, torture, arbitrary detention and kidnapping. OSGA is an Australian based organisation that was established in 2008 to report on and raise awareness of these violations.
