Residents of Sololo are living in fear after heavily armed Ethiopian forces crossed border to hunt down members of the outlawed Oromo Liberation Front (OLF).

Since Tuesday, the forces have been combing the area and already, there are claims locals have been roughed up.

Residents of Waye-Goda, Anona and Damballafachana (DF) are said to have suffered the wrath of the Ethiopians who allegedly beat them up and confiscated their phones.

Sololo Deputy County Commissioner Raphael Muiruri told The Standard that more than 300 Ethiopia soldiers have reportedly crossed over into the district. “They (soldiers) were reported in Anona, DF and Waye-Goda. Reports suggest that the foreign security forces are hunting OLF,” he said.

I read Lencho Lata’s recent op-ed, “Electoral Absolutism in Ethiopia,” with great interest. Ethiopia is approaching a political dead end and there is no better alternative to seeking compromise and a third way.

The absolutist idea of the Ethiopian elitist that Lencho so aptly described and the severe political and ethnic polarization that currently exists will eventually end all of us in mutual annihilation and self-destruction. Far from being a panacea, as Lencho noted, elections may in fact aggravate these acute divisions.

ETHIOPIA BOOTS OUT "VISITING" ODF DELEGATION

A senior delegation of the Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) led by veteran Oromo leader, Lencho Lata, had been told to leave Ethiopia days after returning home to pursue peaceful struggle, the group said in a statement on Sunday.

“Regrettably, despite verbal overtures, no face-to-face talks could be held. Hence, our delegates had to return prematurely to Europe on the 22nd of March 2015,” the statement said. “This incident does not mark the end of the road but rather only the start of our efforts to ground our organization among our people in our country.”

They were supposed to be released under probation last year (January 2014), but they were kept in prison so far for unexplained bureaucratic reasons.

ODF Statement on the Recent Visit of its delegation to Addis Ababa

A senior delegation of the Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) was dispatched to Finefinne (Addis Ababa) on March 18, 20015 to kick-start stalled peace talks with the Ethiopian government. Regrettably, despite verbal overtures, no face-to-face talks could be held. Hence, our delegates had to return prematurely to Europe on the 22nd of March 2015. After two years of relentless efforts to engage the Ethiopian government from outside, the ODF took the unilateral action of sending a high-level delegation led by its President, Mr. Leenco Lata. The delegation arrived in Addis on 19 March 2015.

The Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) decided from its inception to pursue the path of peaceful political struggle to defend the rights of the Oromo people and secure freedom, democracy, and prosperity for all peoples in Ethiopia. Accordingly, basing itself in the country and establishing itself among its constituents at home, and registering and legalizing it as a political party able to play its part in the country’s democratization has been and continues to be ODF’s highest priority. To this principled end, we have been trying to engage all political actors in Ethiopia including the ruling party and the government. But, despite out best efforts, negotiations with the government to resolve outstanding issues and facilitate our re-entry into the political process could not commence in earnest.

As we have learned from different media outlet, ODF entourage led by Obbo Leenco Leta have flow to Shaggar. If my source is accurate they in Shagar as I am writing this short comment. The news has triggered a lot of ado among Oromo and Ethiopian activists at home and in Diaspora. Given Obbo Leencho’s role as dominant figure in OLF and longstanding controversies about his different political moves, it was not difficult to expect such kind of fuss. There are some optimists who are expecting/ hoping for some kind of Black Swan (miraculous ending) as outcome of the move while at the same time their/his detractors are asserting that this is a realized “conspiracy theory" which they have been prophesying for so long and its result would have an apocalyptic impact on Oromo struggle for freedom and justice.

We have been told many times over by the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) about development in Ethiopia without understanding its meaning and significant impacts on democracy, economy, and social and human rights. As we know, there are many different definitions of development, understanding the term “development” is crucial since it has changed throughout history. The easiest way to define development, in our case, is to describe it in terms of the improvement of the life of the society – which is not happening as TPLF, Inc., wants us to believe. Development is not just only about economic growth, but about the elevation of the living standards of the whole society, and it should aim to create economic, social and political improvements so that all people can live dignified lives. It is good to have development for poverty alleviation, without excluding other social aspects – such as human rights, good governance and treatments of citizens fairly and equally without favouring one group or any group over the other for any reason.

Irreechaa is one of the indigenous Oromo culture by which Oromos are getting together to thank their Creator called Waaqaa or God for the reason that He helped them to turn a year. Authorities in Ethiopia have denied medical attention to Ethiopian journalist Temesghen Desalegn, who has been imprisoned since October, according to sources close to the journalist.

Temesghen Desalegn, owner of the now defunct news magazine  Feteh (Justice), is serving a three-yearterm in Ziway Prison, outside Addis Ababa, on charges of defamation, incitement, and false publication in connection with a series of opinion pieces he wrote inFeteh in 2012, according to news reports and a translation of the charge sheet that CPJ reviewed.

Ethiopia must stop 'digital attacks on journalists abroad'

Human Rights Watch (HRW).

ADDIS ABABA: Inflation in Ethiopia accelerated to 8.2 percent in February from year earlier due to higher prices for food items such as vegetables, fruit and meat, the statistics office said on Tuesday. 

Annual inflation in January was 7.7 percent. 

The Central Statistics Agency said food price inflation increased to 9.6 percent in February, up from 7.1 percent the previous month. The non-food inflation rate dropped to 6.8 percent last month from 8.2 percent in January. 

Inflation peaked at 9.1 percent in 2014 but remains stubbornly high.

It is a known fact that the non-stop theme of discussion among the Oromo polity is the “conflict”: ‘Ethiopian Democratization’ vs. ‘Oromian Liberation.’ This either or approach, as if the two goals are irreconcilably exclusive to each other, is the cause of “animosity” between the two camps. Some cadres in both camps still look at each other as foes, just forgetting the main enemy of the Oromo people – the Tigrinya-Speaking Habeshanized Nafxanya (the TSHN) – now on power at Tulluu Daalatti palace in Finfinne. Can’t we liberate and democratize both Biyya-Kush (Gross Oromia) and Biyya-Oromo (Net Oromia)? NB: Biyya-Oromo = Oromo country; Biyya-Kush = Kush country. Why couldn’t Oromo liberation forces from both camps come to terms and cooperate in building at least an alliance based on the common denominator of freedom (bilisummaa), which we can call Tumsa Bilisummaa Oromoo (TBO)/Alliance for Freedom of the Oromo (AFO)? Is it really because of the above mentioned ideological difference? Our common sense dictates that if we want to prevent the reversal of the victories we have achieved up to now, to move forward from the status quo, we have to come together and build a strong liberation force. It is only in this way that we can defeat the currently ruling hegemonist force, the TSHN, and can hinder the possible coming of the backward looking Amharinya-Speaking Habeshanized Nafxanya (the ASHN) to power.
