The Committee to Protect Journalists says Ethiopia has detained a reporter for covering land evictions. The project which involves the construction of a huge hydroelectric dam had forced farmers and locals to relocate.
Ethiopian journalist Muluken Tesfahun of the privately owned weekly newspaper Ethio-Mehedar was arrested while reporting on the return of thousands of farmers who had been forced from their land near the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. The government has admitted the March evictions were illegal, but so far no charges have been brought against the reporter. DW spoke to Mohammed Keita, Advocacy coordinator for sub-Saharan Africa at the Committee to Protect Journalists in New York.

Former Egyptian commander: Striking Ethiopia dam 'impossible'
May 30, 2013 | Egypt Independent
General Mohamed Ali Bilal, commander of Egyptian forces during the Gulf war, said that it is “impossible” to strike the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam because such a decision would be issuing a challenge to the entire world.
Bilal told al-Arabiya satellite channel on Wednesday that such an attack would bring Egypt into conflict with those countries, such as China and Israel, whose citizens are involved in the construction of the dam. Egypt is not in a position to stand up to all those countries, he added.

I read the letter written in Amharic and posted on the Habesha website: http://www.zehabesha.com/amharic/archives/3573 by Dr. Fikre Tolossa to Dr. Beyan Asoba. In his letter, Dr. Fikre narrates the role Oromo played in Ethiopian history and argues for the unity of the country. He also suggested treasuring and using the old Ethiopian flag. Moreover, he suggested replacing the Latin alphabet with the Ge’ez (Sabean) alphabet. He further accused parties and people who struggled for Oromo’s right and freedom for causing identity crises on the Oromo people. He advised to reject the “narrow and small” Oromia and rather live in the larger Ethiopia.

Ethiopia begins diverting Blue Nile
May 28, 2013 | Daily News Egypt
Water minister says diversion is an ‘engineering procedure’ and reiterates that Egypt has not given its approval for the construction of the dam
The Ethiopian government held a ceremony on Tuesday at the construction site of the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam to mark the beginning of diverting the waters from one of the Nile’s main tributaries, the Blue Nile. The diversion of the water is part of the renaissance dam project that Ethiopian officials insist will not affect Egypt’s water supply.
Egyptian Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohamed Bahaa Al-Din published a statement on Tuesday in response to the diversion stressing that it is just an “engineering procedure to prepare the site in order to start the construction process”. He added the diversion process would not stop the water from flowing down river to Egypt.

Ethiopia’s lasting legacy of famine
May 28, 2013 | The Telegraph
By Roger Thurow
At an international hunger summit in London next month, experts will seek to tackle the long-term impact of childhood malnutrition and its consequences for struggling nations
In the first-year classroom of Shemena Godo Primary School, in Boricha, Ethiopia, three dozen children study the alphabet. On a black chalkboard, teacher Chome Muse highlights the letter B and writes the combination with each vowel. Ba, be, bi, bo, bu.
The pupils, crowded two or three to a desk, listen to the sounds. I am watching one boy in particular, Hagirso, who sits at the back of the room. He copies the letters in his tattered notebook and proudly shows me his first attempts at writing, a triumphant milestone in early childhood development.

Ethiopia Refuses to Cooperate With World-Bank-Funding Probe
May 28, 2013 | Bloomberg
By William Davison
Ethiopia’s government said it won’t cooperate with a probe into whether the World Bank violated its own policies by funding a program in which thousands of people were allegedly relocated to make way for agriculture investors.
Ethnic Anuak people in Ethiopia’s southwestern Gambella region and rights groups including Human Rights Watch last year accused the Washington-based lender of funding a program overseen by soldiers to forcibly resettle 45,000 households. The Inspection Panel of the World Bank, an independent complaints mechanism, began an investigation in October into the allegations, which donors and the government have denied.

Elemo Ali is a passionate nationalist and a well respected and highly talented musician. He was born in Haramayaa and he says his love for music started when he was about 12 years old, in the historical cultural city of Dir...e Dawa, where he first heard local flute and harmonica styles.
He started playing guitar after circumstances led him to be a young refugee in Djibouti. Thereafter, in Saudi Arabia, even the local laws restricting musical entertainment failed to prevent Ali from pursuing his passion for music and mastering the keyboard. He also plays the flute as well as being an accomplished guitar player and singer.

Kerry, in Ethiopia, Strongly Defends Drone Policy

By Keith Johnson
Mr. Kerry, in response to audience questions about the U.S. drone program, vigorously defended the justice of kill strikes by unmanned aerial vehicles just days after President Barack Obama’s big speech last week narrowing the scope of the fight against terrorism.
“The only people we fire at are confirmed terror targets, at the highest level. We don’t just fire a drone at somebody we think is a terrorist,” Mr. Kerry said, adding that strikes are ruled out if there could be collateral damage. He went on to describe the drone program as one of the “most accountable,” unlike terrorist attacks, which are indiscriminate.

Food prices squeezing poor people and driving social change by stealth
May 23, 2013 | Relief Web
A new era of high and volatile food prices go beyond affecting what people can afford to eat and are causing life-changing shifts in society, experts warn today.
The report, Squeezed*, reveals a global snap-shot of how the failure of wages to keep pace with five years of food price rises is putting a strain on families, communities and society, including increased levels of domestic violence and alcohol and drug abuse. Roles and social needs are changing as women who once remained at home are entering the job market and agricultural jobs are being abandoned for more lucrative jobs in an attempt to afford higher food prices.
A new era of high and volatile food prices go beyond affecting what people can afford to eat and are causing life-changing shifts in society, experts warn today.

“No man is an island” in Oromia
May 23, 2013 | Far From Africa
“No man is an island” is what I associate with Oromo culture. Oromo?! From where?! Oromia! Where?! It’s when I met Dhabesa, a journalist, from Oromia who is now living in Melbourne that I got to understand more about a not-so known country. Dhabesa and the Oromo community which he works with have the great ambition create the internationally recognized state of Oromia. According to Dhabesa, Oromia is a country located on the current Ethiopian territory but in search of government.

The astonishing courage of Ethiopian women left me in awe
May 17, 2013 | The Telegraph
Dr Karen Ballard, a senior lecturer in Women’s Health at the University of Surrey, writes about the her year in Ethiopia caring for pregnant women in a rural clinic.
Balaynesh is 17 years-old. At least she thinks she is, but when you don’t celebrate birthdays, you easily lose count of the years. She arrived at an antenatal clinic I was running in the rural highlands of western Ethiopia, having heard that there was a farengii (foreigner) carrying out ultrasound scans on pregnant women.
Like most women I saw, Balaynesh had walked for just over two hours along the rust-tinged dirt tracks to get to the clinic. She sat patiently with the other 20 or so women, all prepared to wait many hours for their turn. Perhaps it was a welcome relief from the relentless grind of daily work.

Ethiopian editor questioned over story on Meles' widow
May 15, 2013 | CPJ
New York, May 15, 2013--Ethiopian police in Addis Ababa questioned an editor for several hours today in connection with a story published in October about the widow of the late Ethiopian leader Meles Zenawi, according to news reports.
Officers in the Ethiopian Federal Police Crime Investigation Department interrogated Ferew Abebe, the former editor-in-chief of the private Amharic-language weekly Sendek, about his sources for the October 10, 2012, story that said Azeb Mesfin, Meles' widow, had refused to leave the Ethiopian national place nearly two months after the prime minister's death, local journalists said. The story, which was widely covered in local and international press, cited government sources as saying that Meles' successor, Hailemarian Desalegn, was unable to live in the palace.

Refusing a 'diminished self': Informed by prison experience, activist-scholar imagines a more open Ethiopia
May 15, 2013 | Phys.org

Four years ago this spring, Birtukan Midekssa was in solitary confinement in an Ethiopian prison. Her cell was 13 feet wide and 20 feet long and had no window. She was allowed only two visitors: her elderly mother and her 3-year-old daughter.
Midekssa left Ethiopia in 2011, after two imprisonments that consumed 41 months of her life. She stayed first in Washington, D.C., and then at Stanford University. Today—grateful, happy, and energized—she has an office (with a window) at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute, where she is a fellow this year. (A lawyer by training, Midekssa is also a Visiting Fellow with Harvard Law School's Human Rights Program; starting in the fall she'll pursue a one-year mid-career master's degree in public administration through the Mason Program at Harvard Kennedy School.)

The Ordeal of Legendary Oromo Artist Fayessa Furi
May 14, 2013 | Zewdu Wege (PhD)
The well known and much loved young Oromo artist Fayessa Furi left his beautiful wife and kids behind in the repressive and prison empire of Abyssinia and head to North Africa. He left Oromia a week ago and now he is seeking asylum in one of the North African country.
This gifted and talented young Oromo artist is known not only for his beautiful song but also his courage and bold stand for our just cause and the formation of an independent Oromo state. Through his beautiful voice he touched every thing. He sang about love, poverty, beauty and nature. He also sang about braver Oromo hero/heroines, betrayal and unfaithfulness of OPDO, the crime and genocide committed against the Oromo People and the importance of unity to succeed. Despite TPLF ongoing repression, intimidation and harassment of Oromo people, Fayessa Furi sang all these songs boldly and fiercely without fear. To their shame he did all these in front of them and under their noise. This proved how courageous, strong nationalist and role model he is in our struggle for freedom.

Lack of Statehood Exposes Oromo to Humiliation in Their Own Homeland
May 14, 2013 | OLF Info Desk
Successive Ethiopian regimes worked against the Oromo. A comparatively larger population, wide geographic area and immense economic resources of Oromia have been viewed by these regimes in Ethiopia as the threat to their naked ambition for domination for which reason they targeted Oromo as an object of fear and hate. Leaving the past regimes’ horrific acts against the Oromo for history we will cite few samples from the current regime.

Ethiopia: DFID Fail to Act on Human Rights Violations
May 14, 2013 | Think Africa Press
By Gordon Bennett
The Ethiopian government may be guilty of atrocities against indigenous peoples as it completes construction of the Gibe III dam. UK aid-agency DFID has failed to exert its influence and protect the rights of these minorities.
Ethiopia may until recently have been a byword for famine, but in one part of the country at least, there are people who have lived largely without outside help for hundreds of years. With the connivance of the British government, this is about to change forever.
The tribes of the Lower Omo Valley in south west Ethiopia – chief among them the Mursi, the Nyangatom, the Bodi and the Daasanach – depend on a combination of flood retreat cultivation on the banks of the Omo River, rain fed cultivation further back from the river, and cattle on the grass plains.

It is better to identify myself to all readers than to deeply tell my past back ground. Few years ago, I was a student at Jima University. While in university, I actively participated and contributed my share of expectation to the cause of Oromo students’ movement protesting against the plunder and brutality of the Habesha regime. Starting from high school education, recruited to an Oromo liberation front (OLF) underground cell, I spent my school time as an activist fulfilling my responsibility of a generation. When I was at university I didn’t completely went to study, but also shared my time for the cause of the Oromo peoples’ struggle. I just couldn’t isolate myself from any movement that stands for justice and equality of the Oromo people.

UNSETTLING PATTERNS OF GENOCIDAL MASSACRES AGAINST OROMO IN OROMIA, ETHIOPIA
May 10, 2013 | Oromo Press
Framing: What We Are Told Is Not What It Is
Tigire ruling elites often misleadingly frame genocidal massacres against Oromo in various parts of Oromia as "inter-communal violence, ethnic conflict, border conflict or water conflict" in order to absolve themselves from responsibility and possible future indictment in local and international courts.
For at least two decades, genocidal massacres against Oromo have been framed that way in order to cover-up the deliberate effort by TPLF elites to either reduce Oromo by attrition to a minority population or to destroy them fully so that Tigireans can take over Oromia and its resources. That is their long-term plan.

End of organized suppression of Oromo Nation

It is extremely excruciating and sorrowful that in this century we Oromos, one of Africa’s greatest people, do not have free political, economical and cultural representation in the United Nations while we are the first nation to adopt democratic government [Gadaa] unlike most world countries, which were under monarchs or iniquitous government systems.

Oromia: Mass Media Under Arrest – World Press Freedom Day
May 03, 2013 | Gadaa.com
As the world marks the UNESCO-adopted World Press Freedom Day today, May 3, 2013, activists of press freedom in the Horn of Africa highlight how the increasingly oppressive and draconian press laws in Ethiopia have led not only to the imprisonments and exiling of scores of Oromo journalists, but also to the wiping out of the Afan Oromo mass media serving the Oromo people in the Horn of African region.
The Oromo people make up the largest nation in the Horn of Africa, and their language, Afan Oromo, is the third largest language with most speakers in Africa. Despite this, there is no independent Afan Oromo media outlet operating in Oromia, the homeland of the Oromo, due to the hostile policies of the Ethiopian government towards Afan Oromo mass media, in addition to the already repressive media laws that have made independent journalism a risky career choice.

Ethiopia: Terrorism Law Decimates Media - Human Rights watch
May 03, 2013 | Human Rights Watch
Free Jailed Journalists, Allow Media Freedom
(Nairobi) – The Ethiopian government should mark World Press Freedom Day, on May 3, 2013, by immediately releasing all journalists jailed under the country’s deeply flawed anti-terrorism law. On May 2, 2013, the Supreme Court upheld an 18-year sentence under the anti-terrorism law for Eskinder Nega Fenta, a journalist and blogger who received the 2012 PEN Freedom to Write Award.
Eleven journalists have been convicted and sentenced since 2011 under Ethiopia’s repressive anti-terrorism law, including six in absentia. Three of the eleven are currently in prison. Two other journalists are currently on trial under the anti-terrorism law. Another journalist, Temesgen Desalegn, the editor of the now defunct independent magazine Feteh, is on trial for three offenses under the criminal code.

The United States Thursday slammed "harsh" sentences handed down to an Ethiopian blogger and an opposition leader, voicing concerns about the "politicized prosecution" of government critics.
An Ethiopian court dismissed the appeals of blogger Eskinder Nega and opposition leader Andualem Arage, jailed last year for terror-related offenses.

Needs of Ethiopia’s Street Children not Met, Aid Group Says
May 01, 2013 | VOA
ADDIS ABABA — Shelter is among the many things Ethiopia’s street children long for. But a study by the international aid group Save the Children indicates that local non-governmental organizations and community organizations rarely offer what the street children want.
Azeb Adefrsew, a researcher with Save the Children, said the limited services provided by local NGOs do not match what the kids see as their greatest needs.
