Kidnapped, detained, tortured - a victim of the Ethiopia’s secret war

Kidnapped, detained, tortured -a
victim of the Ethiopia’s secret war
Ogaden people are one of the few nations that are still under colonial occupation. They are tormented and subjected to immerse sufferings in the hands of their occupier, Ethiopia. The Emotional and mental sufferings they bear, the physical scars and tortures which could be seen on their frail and malnutrition bodies. Mohamed is one of the Ogaden civilians who were brutally tortured by the Ethiopia military, which left him with these physical scars.

When Ogaden Online visited him at his place of residence in Dhadhaab refugee camp, Kenya, he told our reporter that the Ethiopian military captured him while he was tending to his camel at nearby Yoocaale village, near Awaare which is Degahbour Province in Ogaden. The Ethiopian military accused him of being an ONLF supporter and mercilessly tortured him. When asked about some specific types of torture methods that he

Human right violations alarmingly increasing in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA (Assaman Info)- After the death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, the late Ethiopian Prime Minister, the number of human right violations committed by the government on members, supporters, and representatives of All Ethiopia Unity Party (AEUP), one of the most important opposition political parties working under the narrowest political landscape of the country, has been alarmingly increasing.  Different reports are indicating that after the death of the Prime Minister thousands of members and supporters of the AEUP have become victims of the brutal human right violations committed by the Ethiopian government just due to their political belief. The victims also include women, children and retired people.

Ethiopia: Official dismissed as wife faces charges

AP /  November 29, 2012

Fired Junedin Sado
Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on Thursday fired the country’s civil minister, Junedin Sado, whose wife is one of 29 people facing terrorism charges related to protests by Muslims who accuse of the government of meddling in their religious affairs.

Sado published a letter in the country’s independent newspapers in which he defended his wife and criticized the federal prosecutor’s charges.

Adama mayor replaced

November 28, 2012 | Gulele Post

Continuing with the reshuffle within OPDO, mayor of Adama, Guta Lanchore, was suddenly sacked from a post he held for a little over a year. Adama is home for an estimated 300,000 people.  Guta is being replaced by Bakar Shalle, who is leaving his post as State Minister for Government Communications Affairs to take up the new assignment. With the departure of Bakar Shalle from the federal government, cabinet posts held by OPDO’s further dwindles. The official explanation given to the rank and file for change of guard is that the party needs to quell the growing resentment among the town’s dwellers, fueled by the incompetent response of the government to breakdown of the city’s main water pipeline, resulting in loss of water supply for over two months, for which the mayor had to take the wrap.

In-Depth: Imagining the future of migration

JOHANNESBURG, 21 November 2012 (IRIN) -What does the future hold for international migration? By 2030, will we see more people migrating in response to climate change and an increased demand for their labour in Europe? Or will rapid economic growth and development in traditional migrant-sending countries persuade more people to stay put?

Opride.Com REDEEMS ETHIOPIA, FINDS OROMO AT FAULT FOR SUFFERING INFLICTED BY ABYSSINIANS

27 November 2012 (Oromo Press)The purpose of this piece is to bring into the open a lurking question that is often avoided as a taboo by Oromians to maintain internal harmony. That question  relates to the divisive and self-defeating agenda propagated by Ethiopian nationalists of Oromo descent. The idea of 'Ethiopian nationalists of Oromo origin' is no fiction. They exist and they are taking a toll on our just movement and cause.  Even more than Amharas and Tigires do, the primary concern of this enclave is to maintain one Ethiopia at the cost of belittling and even destroying the long-standing Oromo question for self-determination up to independence. The group masquerades in dubious and faddy ideas of Ethiopianism, Horn of Africanism and internationalism, but they do frequently throw in "Oromo" as a way of adding flavor to their hidden beliefs in Ethiopia. They act like 'House Negros', those  slaves on American plantations who were more concerned for the needs and well-beings of their owners than were the owners themselves.

On Oromos promising prospects and the way forward

By Dawud Ibsa

The fact that the Oromo fell under occupation 130 years ago should be clear to all Oromos by now. The power holders of the Ethiopian state that succeeded to build this empire and hold on power used massive foreign assistance and control of human and economic resource from subject nations under the Ethiopian state. In this long history of oppressed and oppressor relationship between the Oromo and the Ethiopian ruling elites, the military and civilian bureaucracy was monopolized until today by these ruling elites. The Oromo have served the state as an individual professional in these state structures and most of the time excelling their masters in profession and performance.

Terror case against 29 Ethiopians unconstitutional

The Associated Press

ADDIS ABABA (November 22/2012) — Defense lawyers have told the Ethiopian High Federal Court that terrorism charges against 29 Muslims are unconstitutional.

Federal prosecutors are accusing the 29, which includes prominent clerics, journalists and activists, with terrorism and attempts to create an Islamic state. Tensions have been rising between the government in this mostly Christian country and Muslim worshippers that have led to anti-government protests.

Ethiopia delays appeal of jailed blogger, opposition leader

November 22/2012 (AFP):--An Ethiopian court on Thursday delayed the appeal of blogger Eskinder Nega and opposition leader Andualem Arage who were jailed earlier this year for for terror-related offences.

Judge Dagne Melaku said the Supreme Court needed several weeks to look over the “bulky” case file to review the evidence against them, setting the next hearing for December 19.

Eskinder and Andualem were among 24 people convicted in June under Ethiopia’s anti-terrorism legislation. Eskinder was jailed for 18 years, while Andualem was sentenced to life.

ADDIS ABABA , Nov 22 2012 (IPS) -The world received contradictory signals about Ethiopia’s human rights record when in the same week it was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council, a major German charity closed its Ethiopian office in protest against a restrictive political environment.

“If the qualification to be elected to the UNHRC is the human rights record of a country – then Ethiopia should not have been appointed…. the condition of human rights in this country is disastrous,” Endalkachew Molla, director of Ethiopia’s oldest rights organisation, the Human Rights Council (HRCO), told IPS.

It is known that the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) was formed in 1973 to struggle for the liberation of the Oromo people from a century old colonial domination and to establish an independent republic of Oromia. Regrettably, a split was created in 2001 in the organization negatively affecting the national struggle.

We the representatives of the OLF Transitional Authority and OLF Shanee Gumii have met from 14 - 20, November 2012 to finalize the talks which have been ongoing for many years and discussed problems which have led to the split of the OLF in 2001; being aware of the importance of unity for the liberation of the Oromo people and the gravity of the situation in which the Oromo nation finds itself, and reaffirming the ideals of the OLF and the objective of Oromo national struggle,we have reached the following solutions and agreements:

Between Journalism and Terrorism: the Curious Case of Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson

By Alemayehu Fentaw Weldemariam | November 20, 2012

Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson, two Swedish journalists, were detained on 1 July 2011 after they were captured in Ethiopia during a fight between rebels from the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and a contingent of the Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) in Ogaden. The two journalists were charged with violations of the Ethiopia anti-terrorism law and both acknowledged during their trial that they had entered Ethiopia illegally via Somalia accompanied by rebels from ONLF. However, they argued that their contacts with the ONLF were intended to help them enter a region the Ethiopian authorities would not allow journalists to enter. They alleged their purpose was to report on the activities of a Swedish oil company, Lundin Petroleum AB, in the Ogaden as well as allegations of human rights violations. Both of them denied terrorism charges, including claims that they had been given weapons training. They were, however, sentenced in December 2011 by the Third Criminal Bench of the Federal High Court to seven years in prison on the charge of abetting terrorism, which they denied, and another three years and 3 months for entering Ethiopia illegally,a charge to which they pleaded guilty. They were pardoned by the Ethiopian Government on 10 September 2012 and released the next day after serving nine months of their sentences.

Tesfaye Gebreab: The man who created the first Oromo main character in the history of the vast Amharic literature

By Hunde Dhugassa
Author/Journalist Tesfaye Gebreab
Many individuals, journalists, politicians, historians, academicians and leaders from Ethiopia and neighbouring countries, and from different corners of the world have written about the Oromo. This includes its history, politics, ability, value and nature. The time, objective, nature and fact differ from person to person. The objective of this brief note is not to give analysis on the subject matter, but rather to summarize an hour presentation of one of the most famous and controversial writers on the issue of the Oromo.

Any ordinary Oromo from Ethiopia can, without difficulty, name two important non-Oromo authors from its neighbours –who have had a positive contribution on the history and visibility of the Oromo nation: Professor Asmerom Legesse, and author/jounalist Tesfaye Gebreab.

High time to support our Muslim brothers

By Abebe Gellaw | November 18, 2012

For the last two decades, nonviolent struggle, or civil resistance, appeared to be highly misunderstood and confused in Ethiopia. The resultant effect of this confusion is that so many opportune moments to build a movement for change have been wasted. In fact, a number of leaders failed to provide the necessary leadership to mobilize the oppressed people of Ethiopia to confront their oppressors.

Meles Zenawi's legacy for the Horn of Africa

Zenawi's regime will be remembered for holding Ethiopia together as one country even under the centripetal ethnic order.

There is little doubt that Meles Zenawi's
political architecture gave modest advantages

were the subjects of the empire [EPA]
November 18/2012 (Aljazeera): Any recent visitor to Ethiopia would be struck by the ubiquitous billboards commemorating the late Prime Minister's life, two months after his demise. Meles Zenawi's photo form the backdrop to the TV screens and adorns the streets of all the major towns and villages.

These sights were supplemented by the chorus of Africa leaders that attended the PM's funeral and who lavished praise on this "dedicated son of African soil". He was depicted as the untiring leader who toiled for the upliftment of the indigent peoples of Ethiopia and Africa.

Perpetrators of Human Rights are not Protectors of Human Rights

The following is a statement from the Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA)

HRLHA – November 14, 2012

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) strictly denounces that UN General Assembly elected Ethiopia on November 12, 2012 to serve in the UN human Rights Council for the next three years starting from January 1, 2013.

In the last two decades the Ethiopian Government led by EPRDF/TPLF has been repeatedly condemned by regional and international human rights organizations including US State Department and UN independent experts[1] and UN Special Rapporteurs for its heinous human rights crimes against its citizens.

GENEVA: A UN agency on Thursday condemned Argentina, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Fiji and Peru for having the worst record for workers¹ rights out of 32 countries it reviewed.

The five countries singled out constituted "the most serious and urgent cases regarding freedom of association," said the International Labour Organization.

An ILO report looked at the murder of four workers in Argentina during the eviction of staff from a construction site in Mar del Plata in 2009.

Assessing the 2012 UN Human Rights Council Elections: One-Third of Candidates Unqualified for Membership

By Sarah Trister (Manager of Congressional Affairs) | Freedom house

Executive Summary
The United Nations General Assembly is scheduled on November 12 to vote on 18 new members of the 47-member UN Human Rights Council (HRC).  According to the Council’s founding resolution (60/251), Council members are expected to “uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights,” and the election of new members “shall take into account the contribution of candidates to the promotion and protection of human rights and their voluntary pledges and commitments thereto.”  Freedom House’s assessment of the domestic human rights standards of the candidate countries and their voting records on UN resolutions related to human rights indicates that one-third of the candidates fail to meet the United Nations’ own criteria for election to the Human Rights Council.

Ethiopia: Ogaden Conflict – Things have taken a turn for the worse

William Lloyd-George,IPS | November 13th, 2012

Addis Ababa — Many were hoping that recent peace talks between the Ethiopian government and Ogaden rebels would signal an end to the gruelling 18-year-old conflict. The latest round of talks, however, dashed all dreams of peace between the two sides.

Things have taken a turn for the worse. Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) founder and foreign secretary Abdirahman Mahdi told IPS that he currently cannot see a way for the talks to continue.

Ogaden is a territory in the southeast of the Somali Region in Ethiopia. And ONLF intellectuals have fought for an independent state there since the 1991 fall from power of Ethiopian dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam.

Oromia: It is up to you

By Yaadasaa Dafaa | November 11, 2012

It is natural to ask if an Oromo individual, or a political group to answer the question “Do you honestly or modestly feel that you participated consciously or unconsciously in holding the struggle of the Nation Oromia as a “hostage”? Some times it could be very hard to look at ourselves in the mirror and see what others observe about us. Because, as human beings, we think that we are right most of the time. In pure reality, we could be wrong!!!! But it takes courage and unflinching self-confidence to admit that. Coming back to our struggle, there was a time when all the children of Abbaa Gadaa were united and all of did sing the beauty of the unity and solidarity of the Oromo people. But starting the late 1990s the seeds of mistrust, and outsmarting each other, including demoralizing poisonous agenda began to be spread. The result was/is strange behaviours contrary to the Oromo Nation’s cultural heritage started to erode Orommummaa and manifest it’s shamelessly. It was at that time when the conspiracies of the Oromo Nation’s core enemies and their collaborators within the Oromia’s struggle for independence commenced to take it’s abortive shape within the Oromo community all over the globe. No matter where ever the Oromo communities are, most of the Oromom citizens began to be at odd towards each other in all aspects of life, let alone man made artificial politics. This unfortunate phenomenon within the Oromo communities all over the World have reached the highest level of creating animosity among the people vividly and openly. As a result the genuine struggle for the Independence of Oromia had descended to it’s lowest inspirational power. Once dear comrades are now a days openly despising each than their common enemies. I am not going to insult your intelligence by asking you “who jubilantly is watching this when the Oromo citizens are blackmailing one another, disfranchising the potentials of their collective power and taking each others to foreign Courts of the Law”?

Funny Breaking News: UN elects Ethiopia to the UN Human Rights Council

This news comes as a surprise to most Ethiopians and even the international community that have been asking day and night for Ethiopia to respect human rights.

It is an absurdity for anyone that would expect an international organisation as big as the UN to develop in such a manner. The absurdity is that  the UN General Assembly elected Ethiopia, along with Kenya, Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Gabon to represent Africa for membership in the UN Human Rights Council, for the period 2013-2015.

Unqualified Ethiopia elected and U.S. wins re-election to U.N. Human Rights Council

* Western group is only one that had competitive slate
* Rights groups criticize uncompetitive elections
* U.S. says rights council needs to improve
* Sudan ended candidacy after criticism of rights record
* Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, UAE, and Venezuela- are unqualified for membership
* Brazil, Kenya, and Sierra Leone - were questionable.

Ethiopia woman tells of sex slavery in Saudi Arabia

 Mohammad Awad | 11 November 2012
Ethiopian women face massive hardships, including sexual
violence in Saudi Arabia.

ADDIS ABABA: An Ethiopia woman revealed that she was the victim of sex slavery after she attempted to find work as a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia.

For H, who asked that her identity remain anonymous, her ordeal began after she took a boat to Yemen, where after two months she was able to cross into Saudi Arabia and was hired by what she told Bikyamasr.com was a “nice couple” for a “decent salary.”

But that is when her horrific experience began. She continues to look down at her hands, ever moving, as she retells what she was forced to endure at the hands of her Saudi bosses.

How To End Government Intolerance Of Islam In Ethiopia – OpEd

By: Eurasia Review | November 11, 2012  | Alemayehu Fentaw Weldemariam

The current Ethiopian constitution provides for freedom of religion and requires the separation of state and religion. However the Muslim community in Ethiopia has been, for more than a year now, holding protests at mosques around the country against what is perceived as government interference in religious affairs. The protesters are demanding that the current members of the Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (Majlis) be replaced by elected representatives and that elections for Majlis representatives be held in mosques rather than in the Kebeles. Some members of the Muslim community accuse the Ethiopian Government of controlling the Majlis and sponsoring the propagation of Al-Ahbash, a little known sect of Islam. The Ethiopian Government, on the other hand, accuses the protesters of being led by extremists who want to establish an Islamic state in place of the current secular multination federatioThe Ethiopian Government has responded against some protests in 2012 with deadly force, most recently in Assassa in April and Gerba in October, resulting in the death of at least seven protesters, a large number of injuries, and the imprisonment of a number of protesters on terrorism charges.

HOW TO ROB AFRICA - AL JAZEERA (Video)

The world’s wealthy countries often criticize African nations for corruption — especially that perpetrated by those among the continent’s government and business leaders who abuse their positions by looting tens of billions of dollars in national assets or the profits from state-owned enterprises that could otherwise be use to relieve the plight of some of the world’s poorest peoples. Unwarranted Injustice: Opposing Party Nationals Facing 25 Years

By Eve Pearce
November 10, 2012 (ayyaantuu.com) — On November 1st, the Ethiopian national court convicted nine Oromo nationals, including opposition party leader Bekele Gerba, of crimes related to the sweeping anti-terrorism laws. Gerba was joined by another member of the opposition party, Olbana Lellisa, and seven other Oromo nationals, who were arrested for unknown and unclear reasons. Their sentencing is expected to take place in several weeks.

The Arrests

The case began in August of 2011 when Gerba and Lellisa were arrested after meeting with an Amnesty International delegate, which was afterwards expelled from the country. Gerba, an English teacher at Addis Ababa University and deputy Chairman of the opposition Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM), met with the delegate on August 23, 2011 to exchange information related to human rights abuses within the country. Lellisa, of the Oromo People’s Congress party (OPC) met with the same delegate under similar circumstances three days later, on August 26th. The next day both men were arrested and charged with terror-related offenses; neither of which were publicly supported with evidence.

Culture as a Weapon in the Fight for an Independent Oromia

Introduction
In the three debate articles I have published on this subject in the course of this year, I have argued that history and the current situation speak for Oromo independence assessing the so-called declaration made by a group that split from the OLF positing that the objective of the Oromo Liberation to form an independent state of Oromia is “dropped” in favor of a “new democratic federal republic of Ethiopia”. In the second article I made a call for a declaration of our preferences and for an articulation of a common vision, and above all, a conviction that speaks for the sovereign state which our people deserve and are aspiring for. In the third article I have provided a critical analysis of the arguments being made by other observers against the formation of an independent Oromo state.

Ethiopia abusing religious freedom of Muslims: U.S. body

By Aaron Maasho (Reuters) - ADDIS ABABA | Fri Nov 9, 2012 - A U.S. panel on religious freedom accused the Ethiopian government of trying to tighten control of its Muslim minority amid mass protests, saying it is risking greater destabilization of the Horn of Africa region.

Ethiopia, which has long been seen by the West as a bulwark against Muslim rebels in neighboring Somalia, says it fears militant Islam is taking root in the country.

However, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) accused the government of arresting peaceful Muslim protesters, noting that 29 of them had been charged last month with what the authorities said was "planning to commit terrorist acts".

Ethiopia to possibly be replaced on UN Human Rights Council

The annual din about which countries are fit to occupy seats on the United Nations Human Rights Council will intensify ahead of the General Assembly election for the 18 seats that change hands at the end of 2012. Sudan and Ethiopia are two possibilities for replacements on the 47-seat body, and Syria has been mentioned – scathingly – for a 2014 seat. In an election year, the din from the United States, which many regard as having a questionable human rights record, could be deafening. Washington’s uneasy relations with the council will be recalled along the way.

Oromo : Low Internet Access

With only 0.5 percent of Ethiopia’s population having access to the Internet, the Oromo need to find creative ways to take interest in social media usage as a tool for political and civic engagement.

Below is an article published by Oromo Press

Social media usage in political and civic engagement in nations like the United States is at an all-time high, as shown by the high volumes of tweets and Facebook updates during the 2012 U.S presidential debates. The first U.S. presidential debate saw over 10 million tweets, which is the highest of all the debates. During the third debate on foreign policy, the number of tweets fell to 6.5 million posts. The numbers tell us that Americans are using social media to support their most favorite candidate(s) and issues. The competition to tweet more among peers in a network was obviously visible. There were also tens of Oromos in diaspora who cared to tweet about the American presidential debates.
