Many commentators either have misunderstood or misquoted Jawar Mohammed. He plainly stated that the Oromo Struggle and the Ethiopian Muslim Protest complementary to one another. He said clearly the two don’t contradict each other. Islam had been weak following its introduction in the northern parts of Ethiopia. As it gradually had penetrated into Oromo Land, the Raaba Doori, the military force of the Gadaa System, defended it. And Islam became part of daily life for many people in Biyya Oromoo/Oromia. It is, therefore, impossible to separate Islam and oromummaa since they have been interwoven. They are two sides of a coin. Even Mahatma Gandhi, one of the fathers of a non-violence movement remarked “those who say religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion is.”

Dina Mufti, a spokesman for the Ethiopia's foreign ministry, says Ethiopia wants Egypt to understand that the dam is not going to harm Egypt "in any way." The two ministers had a news conference scheduled for Monday morning but it was cancelled.

ADDIS ABABA/LONDON , Jun 16 2013 (IPS) - Ethiopia may be one of the fastest-growing, non-oil producing economies in Africa in recent years, but corruption in this Horn of Africa nation is a deterrent to foreign investors looking for stable long-term partnerships in developing countries.
“Bankers, miners and developers presenting projects to investment committees in countries that fare badly in corruption rankings frequently struggle to get investment. Corruption raises red flags because it makes local markets uncompetitive, unpredictable and therefore largely hostile to these long-term players,” Ed Hobey, the East Africa analyst at the political risk firm Africa Risk Consulting, told IPS.

The Wonderful Cushitic Oromia: Naming is Identifying

Two things prompted me to write this opinion. One was the ongoing dispute between the Habesha, who daily preach about the glory of Ethiopia and Ethiopiawinet, and the Oromo, who try to defend against such Ethiopian identity from attacking the Oromo nationalism (Oromummaa). Here, because of the fact that naming is identifying, the Oromo want to identify ourselves with Oromia, not with the already contaminated name – Ethiopia. This name is already contaminated with the Abyssinian identity as well as with its system of domination. Thus, we can rename the historic national area of the Oromo (the Cushites), which stretchs from Meroe to Mombasa, as Great Oromia, instead of using the ancient names like Kush, Ethiopia, Nubia or Punt. Despite the renaming, all the wonderful histories we do find in the literature, which are related to these ancient names, are that of the wonderful Cushitic Great Oromia.

No nation was ever liberated through letter writing to the UN Secretary General or the President of the U.S.A. No any number of press releases, any amount of false propaganda of non-existent military action or any number of radio stations will do it either. The bitter truth is one has to fight for one’s own survival. Fighting for survival will require sweat, tears and blood. A great deal of it, too. It does also mean going to the mountains and the bushes. Most of the time, it actually involves paying the ultimate sacrifice of giving your own life for the survival and success of your group.

An Oromo interpreter for UNHCR in Cairo was beaten, denied police services, and subsequently charged extra for medical care on Thursday in retaliation for Ethiopia’s diversion of the Nile River to build a $4.7 billion hydroelectric dam, according to locals.
“Our friend was beaten seriously by a group of Egyptian youth and he was nearly killed,” wrote Abdulkadir Noor Gumi, a Cairo-based community activist, in a frantic appeal letter sent to OPride.com. “He was beaten by chain, metal, and stick...he had a head injury and other injuries on his body.”

The Oromo community in Oslo and its surroundings has a long tradition of boosting the Oromo Identity (Oromummaa) that highly empowers the Oromo nationalism to its host and to the wider society.
This community probably is one of the oldest Diaspora based Oromo communities in Europe. From its inception back in the late 1980s the community has been demonstrating for civil right and Oromumma – as one of the ancient folks with rich culture at different occasions on different forums.

I wanted to re-write this opinion because of the currently intensified anti-Woyane movement led by the Amhara bloc (“multinational organizations”). It raised an important question in the Oromo national liberation camp. Why couldn’t we, the Oromo national liberation forces, come to terms and cooperate in building at least an alliance based on common denominator of freedom (bilisummaa), which we can call Tumsa Bilisummaa Oromoo (TBO)/Alliance for Freedom of the Oromo (AFO)? Is it really because of the supposed ideological difference as indicated in the title of this opinion? Our common sense dictates that, if we want to prevent the reversal of the victories we achieved up to now, to keep the status quo and to move forwards, we have to come together and build a strong national liberation force. It is only in this way that we can defeat the currently ruling hegemonist Woyane and can hinder the possible coming of the backward-looking Amhara unitarists to power.

Several Egyptian politicians were caught on state television threatening and taunting Ethiopia over a dam dispute after not being warned the meeting would be broadcast.
The comments, which were picked up during a meeting with President Mohammed Morsi, center on the construction of Ethiopia’s $4.2 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which aims to divert the flow of the Blue Nile tributary for hydroelectric power.

Thirteen Islamist political parties in Egypt convened Wednesday at the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party headquarters in Cairo to reduce the broad political polarization plaguing the country and plan a course of action to deal with Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam project, Arab dailies lead off.
The Doha-based media network Al-Jazeera reports that the parties agreed that there is a “real need for coordination between all national forces, and especially within the Islamic forces” in order to assume responsibility for the threats the country faces. The Islamic parties apparently vowed to cooperate with all political forces and partners at home, stressing that dialogue among all factions and institutions of the state is the only way to settle any differences of opinion.

ADDIS ABABA — Thousands of Ethiopians demonstrated Sunday in Addis Ababa, the first political protest against the country’s ruling party since 2005.
The demonstrators were shouting they wanted their human rights to be ensured, that political and religious prisoners should be released, and accusing state television of only broadcasting propaganda.

In 2008, Karuturi Global made international headlines when it leased 300,000 hectares (ha) of land in southern Ethiopia with the stated aim of becoming the world’s largest food producer. Five years on, the slow progress of Karuturi and similar projects has prompted the Ethiopian government to reassess its policy of leasing vast tracts of land to single investors.
