Should We Still Suggest an All-Inclusive Alliance, Which Can Be Different and Make a Difference in Ethiopia/Oromia?

October 29, 2013 | By Fayyis Oromia*

In the liberation struggle against the oppressive Abyssinian empire’s system, we had passed through different phases, and we had formed till now different alliances against the tyrant rulers. The struggle has almost always been done by two ideologically opposite political camps, i.e. by the unionist liberators, who want to liberate oppressed nations in the empire and build, where possible, a union of autonomous nations, and by the unitarist patriots, who do disregard the autonomy of nations, but want to liberate individual citizens from any sort of oppression. In other words, it has been the struggle by those emphasizing group (national) liberty and by those stressing individual (citizens’) freedom. Despite their similarity in socialist ideology, one of the major differences between Me’ison and Ihapa was their tendency towards being a unionist and a unitarist, respectively. Me’ison, being dominated and led by Oromo intellectuals, had been for self-determination of nations in a sense of having their own national autonomy within the Ethiopian union, whereas Ihapa, being dominated and led by Tigrean intellectuals, had been for self-determination of nations in a sense of exercising their cultures within a unitary Ethiopia/Great Oromia without national autonomy.

Adverse Selection and Moral Hazard: The Likely Causes for the Crises in the Oromo National Liberation Camp

October 27, 2013 | By Malkaa Guutuu* | Gadaa.com

Since their coercive incorporation into the Ethiopian empire, the Oromo people have initiated numerous valiant, but unsuccessful, efforts to extricate themselves from the oppressive Abyssinian yoke. The Bale insurrection of the 1960′s – which signaled that the Oromo were ready to engage in a protracted struggle to reclaim their freedom, was out-organized, out-gunned and ultimately dislodged by the Ethiopian army. The attempt to promote Oromo self-awareness and interests via peaceful means by the Matcha & Tulama Association (MTA) was viciously suppressed, when the imperial regime of Haile-Sellasie targeted prominent leaders of the association, killing some and incarcerating others – sending the unmistakable message that Oromo self-identification would not be tolerated by the Ethiopian state. The brutal takedown of the MTA propelled the Oromo liberation movement into its next logical phase, facilitating the formation of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), with mandates to liberate the people from colonial subjugation and exploitation. Despite delivering impressive results thus far, however, the OLF has fallen far short of achieving its main objective of emancipating the Oromo people from the ever mounting, increasingly blatant and troubling Abyssinian tyranny.

The role of Oromo music Artists in Oromo national liberation struggle

October 25, 2013 | By Leenjiso Horo

Throughout history music has been used as a means of struggle.  It is a form of language, a type of communication, and a revolutionary force in the time of national struggle.  Popular music conveys messages.  It conveys messages of patriotism and highlights popular sentiments.  It inspires passion, pride, nationalism, and action in citizens to take.  It encourages citizens to take up weapons and fight for the cause they believe in.  For this, it taps into everything from historical memories of the past conflicts to the present injustice.  It is a useful tool for changing the way people think and feel.  It is for these, revolutionaries and nationalists take music very seriously. Through music, musical artists shame and humiliate those who betrays their nation and their country and those who do not support national liberation struggle.  Revolutionary music vilifies the traitors, the vacillators, the cowards, the enemy loyalists and the neutralists at the time of national liberation struggle.  For these, music can be used as a propaganda tool in a war of national liberation.

The Untold Story of “Raggaatuu”- The Famous OLA Commander

October 23, 2013 | Gulele Post | Originally written by: Afendi Muteki | Translated by: Hambisaa Soolee

In the history of OLA (Oromo Liberation Army), Juukii Barentoo is the most revered female martyr. Her martyrdom was so different in that she gave her life to save many Oromo fighters while she was one of the leaders of the organization. This was happened in 1984 when the special force of the Dergue army ambushed the OLF central command post at Daro-Billiqa in sounthern Daro-Labu district, Hararge province (Near Hararge-Bale border). Juukii, the first female to be elected to the Central Committee of OLF, fought bravely with the Dergue forces for three consecutive days and saved the life of many leaders and fighters of the organization including Obbo Galaasaa Dilboo, the then chairperson of OLF. When she knew that the OLF leaders and others safely crossed to Bale province, because she was wounded, she took her own life, instead of surrender.

Are Oromos Singled Out and Disproportionately Tortured in Ethiopia?

October 22, 2013 | Oromo Press

You may ask people in Oromia, what is the language most widely spoken in Ethiopia's prisons? Who are the ethnic groups singled out and subjected to extreme torture in Ethiopia's notorious torture facilities? The answers to both questions are Afan Oromo (the Oromo language), and the Oromo people respectively. People have pointed to this time and again to the point that torture and political imprisonments are almost becoming synonymous with one ethnicity in Ethiopia, the Oromo people.

Ethiopia: Political Detainees Tortured (Human Rights Watch)

October 18, 2013 | Human Rights Watch
Police Abuse Journalists, Opponents to Extract Confessions
(Nairobi) – Ethiopian authorities have subjected political detainees to torture and other ill-treatment at the main detention center in Addis Ababa. The Ethiopian government should take urgent steps to curb illegal practices in the Federal Police Crime Investigation Sector, known as Maekelawi, impartially investigate allegations of abuse, and hold those responsible to account.

The 70-page report, “'They Want a Confession': Torture and Ill-Treatment in Ethiopia's Maekelawi Police Station," documents serious human rights abuses, unlawful interrogation tactics, and poor detention conditions in Maekelawi since 2010. Those detained in Maekelawi include scores of opposition politicians, journalists, protest organizers, and alleged supporters of ethnic insurgencies. Human Rights Watch interviewed more than 35 former Maekelawi detainees and their relatives who described how officials had denied their basic needs, tortured, and otherwise mistreated them to extract information and confessions, and refused them access to legal counsel and their relatives.

Commemorating 50 Years of Oromo Struggle led by General Waqo Gutu

October 17, 2013 | OPride by Mohammed Ademo

In early 1960s, Oromo dissidents from the Bale province in southeastern Ethiopia organized a small band of combatants to end the repressive and exploitative Amhara settler rule and the unscrupulous expropriation of Oromo land by absentee landlords.

It proved to be one of the biggest landmarks in Oromo people’s struggle for freedom and equality.
“God created us, man enslaved us, God did not create this man free and us slaves,” one of the pioneers, Colonel Hussein Bune Darara, once told a local journalist explaining the movement’s purpose. “It is to uproot this injustice that we embarked on the struggle for freedom.”
As noted in Ethiopia: Power and Protest by Gebru Tareke, the Bale province was only incorporated into the Ethiopian empire "in the late 188os after a brutal campaign mainly directed against the Awetu and Rayitu of Arsi Oromol clan.” Even then, Tareke contends that there was little cross-cultural contact between the chauvinistic Amhara-christian northerners and the predominantly Muslim Bale Oromos.

Ethiopia's pastoralists struggle with harsher weather, [Borena Pastoralists extracting water from a 25 meter deep borehole]

October 17, 2013 | www.trust.org | Author: E.G. Woldegebriel*

DUBULKE, Ethiopia (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Dida Gemechu is in his sixth decade, and he has never seen life as tough as it is now.

Gemechu, a pastoralist, relies on cattle for his livelihood in the Borena region of Ethiopia’s largest regional state, Oromia. But increasingly frequent droughts have made it harder to find boreholes to water his livestock.

Pastoralists represent 11 percent of Ethiopia’s more than 80 million people, but they occupy more than 60 percent of the country’s land, mostly in the northeast and southeast, and are especially vulnerable to changing weather patterns.

Was this blast in Ethiopia a terrorist plot gone awry?

October 16, 2013 | By Jason Straziuso, Associated Press

A blast in Ethiopia's capital over the weekend appears to have been an accidental detonation of explosives by two Somali militants who may have planned to attack a soccer game, a state TV report said Monday.

The report came amid heightened concern of attacks by al-Shabab, the Somali militant group that took responsibility for an attack on a mall in Kenya that killed dozens of people last month.

Tesfaye Gebreab: A victim of Oromophobia?

October 09, 2013 | By Tolera T

Social reconstruction (as optimist call it) or destruction (as pessimists call it) in Ethiopia for the last 120 years has resulted a total annihilation of priceless indigenous knowledge, language and culture, and identity. It would have not been a case of any relevance to point out if it was the result of a continuous natural social shear and evolution. But rather it was a one way conquest that can best be described as imposition that was supported by the wealthy European empires of the time. People of such as Gafat who were entire engineers and entrepreneurs were destroyed while large nations such as the Oromos remain resilient. And this past history should be told without any precondition in all languages possible.

Ethiopian presidency and the need to share our humiliation

October 08, 2013 | By Hawi O.* | OPride

The results are in. Ethiopia’s rubberstamp parliament, in a joint session on Monday, approved Dr. Ambassador Mulatu Teshome Wirtu’s nomination to be the next president of Ethiopia.

As a result, the Oromo people have won the symbolic position of the Ethiopian presidency for four consecutive terms. Dr. Negasso Gidada was “elected” through similar parliamentary session in 1995 as the first president of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) and became George Washington equivalent for the country. Upon Dr. Negaso’s exit in 2001, Lieutenant Girma Wolde-Giorgis, also an Oromo became the John Adams of Ethiopia and served for two terms that ended earlier this week. We now have Dr. Mulatu, as the Thomas Jefferson equivalent of the FDRE.

The man known in federal court as John Doe entered this country posing as the father of another refugee who feared his own father's health would prevent his family from getting into the United States, according to a court document.

Doe has admitted his real name is Kefelegn Alemu Worku. Prosecutors say he participated in government-sponsored torture and murder in Ethiopia.

He goes to trial in U.S. District Court in Denver on Monday for allegations of immigration violations that could net him up to 22 years in an American prison followed by deportation, according to a source familiar with the case.

Is a Pragmatic, Inclusive and Smart Oromo National Liberation Organization Yet to Emerge?

October 07, 2013 | By Fayyis Oromia*

As we all know, there were a lot of Oromo organizations formed to struggle for national freedom since many decades ago. Their hitherto ideologies and visions can be categorized into three: a multinational federation (shared-rule of Great Oromia with self-rule of Golden Oromia); an independent state (Gadaa republic of Golden Oromia); and a multi-regional federation (shared-rule of Great Oromia without self-rule of Golden Oromia, but with self-rule of Oromia’s six or more traditional regions). The first generation of the national liberation movement took only one of the first two goals as their vision (that is why they claim to be arrab-tokkee = single-tongued = “principled”); the second generation used both of the first visions as alternative goals (thus called arrab-lamee = double-tongued); but, there is not yet one organization, which tried/tries to accommodate or entertain the three objectives (to be arrab-sadee = triple-tongued = accommodative and inclusive). The Oromo national liberation struggle is part and parcel of the national liberation movement of the Cushitic nations in the Horn of Africa against the alien forces of colonization, exploitation and domination in the last 3000 years. These Cushitic nations are actually called Oromota in the Macaafa Qulqullu (Bible in Afan Oromo), the word which describes the non-Semitics and those who did influence the ancient Egypt and ancient Israel. Oromota were known as the people of Cush or lately renamed by the Greeks as the people of Ethiopia (land of the burnt faces). As some part of the Cushland later became under the Semitic influence, the Cushites took the authoritarian culture of these alien forces and became Abyssinia, the name given to them by the Portuguese; and, it means the ‘land of mixed.’ Actually, the Cushitic nations are neither “mixed” nor burnt, but they are the brave Cushitic Oromota.

Ethiopia says no plans to withdraw troops from Somalia

October 04, 2013 | Daily Nation

Ethiopia will not withdraw its troops from Somalia in the wake of the deadly attacks in Kenya, the Prime Minister said Friday.

"There is no reason we are withdrawing at this time, we will fight al Shebab to the maximum possible," Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Deslaegn told reporters.

Al Qaeda-linked Shebab extremists claimed responsibility for the attack in an upscale shopping centre in Nairobi last month that left at least 67 people dead.

Agarii Tullu: from serfdom to a revered Oromo hero

October 02, 2013 | OPride  |  By Mohammed Ademo

The history of the Oromo people, Ethiopia’s single largest ethnic group, is marked by socio-political oppression and a continuous resistance against it.

Every Ethiopian ruler, especially starting with emperor Menelik II, has devised systematic campaigns aimed at making the Oromo aliens in their own homeland, impoverishing millions by expropriating their land, and denying them the most basic human rights.

Three Ideological Positions of the Oromo National Liberation Movement

October 03, 2013 | Fayyis Oromia*

There was a time, when the Oromo freedom fighters wanted to liberate the Oromo people from any sort of subjugation in the Ethiopian empire (the potentially future Great Oromia) without trying to demarcate a national area called Oromia; for instance, we can mention the movements like the Raayyaa Oromo revolt, the Bale Oromo resistance, the initiation of Maccaa Tulama Association, the Oromo struggle led by ME’ISON and IC’AT as well as the formation of ENLF (the Ethiopian National Liberation Front), which was the forerunner of the OLF. Then, we came into a situation, which helped some Oromo nationals perceive, accept and respect the existence of an Oromo national area (Golden Oromia) in the Ethiopian empire, but yet without an attempt to separate this area from Ethiopia, the empire, which is said to be build by the blood and bone of the Oromo people. Now, we are in the era, when we started to think, not only about the existence of the Oromo national area, but also about the necessity of liberating this region in a form of an independent Gadaa Republic of Golden Oromia. These three visions (Great Oromia is the whole Ethiopia; Golden Oromia within Great Oromia, and an independent Golden Oromia without Great Oromia) as well as the respective political movements are still entertained in the Oromo society at large; the common denominator of the three forces being the struggle for the unconditional bilisummaa/freedom of the Oromo people from any sort of political domination, economic exploitation and cultural suppression. There is no organization in the name of Oromo struggling for the first version, but there are a lot of Oromo nationals in the so-called multinational parties having this vision.

Big demonstration against law used to imprison journalists

October 01, 2013 | Reporters Without Boarders

An estimated 80,000 people took part in a street demonstration against Ethiopia’s anti-terrorism law on 29 September in response to a call from Unity for Democratic Justice, an opposition group that spent more than three months rallying support for the protest.

Adopted in 2009, the much-criticized anti-terrorism law enables the government to justify arbitrary arrests of journalists, members of the opposition and human rights defenders.
