  Ethiopia After Meles

I. OVERVIEW

The death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who had not been seen in public for several months, was announced on 20 August 2012 by Ethiopian state television. The passing of the man who has been Ethiopia’s epicentre for 21 years will have profound national and regional consequences. Meles engineered one-party rule in effect for the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and his Tigrayan inner circle, with the complicity of other ethnic elites that were co-opted into the ruling alliance, the Ethiopian People’s  Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). The Front promised freedom, democracy and ethnic devolution but highly centralised, tightly controls the economy and suppresses political, social, ethnic and religious liberties. In recent years, Meles had relied ever more on repression to quell growing dissent. His successor will lead a weaker regime that struggles to manage increasing unrest unless it truly implements ethnic federalism and institutes fundamental governance reform. The international community should seek to influence the transition actively because it has a major interest in the country’s stability.

Mr. MellesZenawi and his party EPRDF took over power by military force 21 years ago backed by external forces. For the peoples in Ethiopia, thelast 21 years were continuation of war, conflict, gross human rights violation, imprisonment, disappearances, killings and starvation.

The death of Mr. Zenawi may be a big relief for the majority of the peoples in Ethiopia whose human rights have been continuously and grossly violated for the last 21 years by this dictator and his henchmen. He was one of the worst and wicked dictators that the Empire has ever experienced by the majority of the Empire’s subjects. His departure may create the opportunity for a democratic atmosphere to emerge that could help to peacefully settle the more than a century old conflicts.

Ethiopia’s government should commit to respect for human rights and core rights reforms in the coming days and weeks. The country’s new leadership should reassure Ethiopians by building on Meles’s positive legacy while reversing his government’s most pernicious policies.

Human right watch(Nairobi) – Ethiopia’s new leadership should commit to fundamental human rights reforms in the wake of the death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. Meles’s death was announced by the Ethiopian state media on August 21, 2012.

Ethiopia’s international partners should call on the government to support fundamental rights and freedoms in the country and a prompt rollback of repressive laws, Human Rights Watch said.

“Ethiopia’s government should commit to respect for human rights and core rights reforms in the coming days and weeks,” said Leslie Lefkow, deputy Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “The country’s new leadership should reassure Ethiopians by building on Meles’s positive legacy while reversing his government’s most pernicious policies.”

Meles had been in power since 1991, when the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) lead a coalition of armed opposition groups in overturning the rule of Mengistu Haile Mariam.

The Oromo National Liberation Struggle is Like David's Fight Against Goliath

By :Fayyis Oromia (March 25, 2012)

think the story of David and Goliath is known to all Oromo from the different regions and religions. The story is, in short, as follows:

“The Philistine army had gathered for war against Israel. The two armies faced each other, camped for battle on opposite sides of a steep valley. A Philistine giant, measuring over nine feet tall and wearing full armor, came out each day for forty days, mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight. His name was Goliath. Saul, the King of Israel, and the whole army were terrified of Goliath. One day, David was sent to the battle lines by his father to bring back news of his brothers. David was probably just a young teenager at the time. While there, David heard Goliath shouting his daily defiance, and he saw the great fear stirred within the men of Israel. David responded, ‘who is this Philistine defying the armies of my nation?’ So David volunteered to fight Goliath.
