Back GroundMerara Gudina (PHD), 2006, explained that the Ethiopian political system has been dominated by three contending perspectives, namely, the nation building (Menelikian) perspective, the national domination perspective and the colonial thesis. He further explained that nation building (Menelikian) perspective, which considers all atrocities committed on the oppressed peoples as holy actions to build a nation, is no longer relevant and dominant in the Ethiopian political arena. However, the Menelikian block recently came with a revised open strategy to reclaim the past tyrannical imperial legacy. Perhaps, in this brief essay, I will explain that the revitalizing actions being undertaken by the counterparts of Menelik II provide both threats and immense opportunity for genuine political engagements.

It was Friday, December 27, 2013 and I was waiting for a taxi in Washington DC to go to the “Oromiyaa Tiyya” concert to watch Oromo national artists Hachalu Hundessa, Jambo Jote, Abush Zeleke and Nigusu Tamirat perform live for the Oromo community in downtown Silver Spring. A gray taxi pulled up to the curb and I got in and told the driver my destination in English. A few minutes into the driving an old cabdriver with a funky hat blurts out in Amharic a seemingly innocuous question:
“Are you Habesha?”
That is a common pestering question many Oromians in diaspora who live in places with large Amhara concentration frequently face. I know you want to hear my response. I responded, “No I am not a Habesha? What is a Habesha?” The driver could not believe I could not think of myself as a Habesha and pressed me persistently in Amharic to get “Yes I am an Habesha response,” but that was to no avail. When I responded “I am Oromo from Oromia,” the anonymous driver was as infuriated as I was when he asked me the question he did. So, we got even at this point and my response, kind of, switched the man off and gave me the needed break to anticipate the Oromiyaa Tiyya concert and how the night would unfold until 1 a.m.Mandela’s Long Walk to Ethiopia

As a founder of the ANC’s armed wing, Mandela was deeply drawn to Ethiopia, specially Oromo. His time there tells us a lot about the young leader.

The death of Nelson Mandela last month elicited tributes from around the globe as the life of the man who negotiated with South Africa’s apartheid rulers to bring about majority rule. But despite the commemorations focusing on his capacity for forgiveness in the 1990s, and his ability to make peace with the regime that had imprisoned him, the Mandela of the early 1960s was a very different man. He was a guerrilla, not a peacemaker, and in 1961 had co-founded the armed-wing of the African National Congress (ANC), the Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) or ‘Spear of the Nation’.
To truly understand Mandela, we must understand this earlier part of his life. And to understand this earlier part of his life, we must examine his attraction to Ethiopia where he spent time as a revolutionary. Numerous references to Ethiopia appear in his various memoirs, and a new will be based around his time there.

My aim is to create a strong unity that promotes a truly democratic society, not only within the Oromo people, but also throughout the African continent in my lifetime. True democracy promotes free speech! The purpose of free speech is to communicate freely without interference from anyone, including governments and other officials. Democratic societies promote educational and economic stability. In such a society, individuals are free to speak their minds and are able to criticize, not only the ones who have power, but the government as a whole in order to promote unity. As some of us know a famous Oromo proverb, “Dhalooni nama hundi walqixumaadhaan dhalate gaafa dhalte” (every one of us came into the world as a free individual – a status which we earned from God). This means, every person has a God-given right to speak freely. To me, freedom is the ability to live according to how one feels while also respecting others, following God’s and societal laws, while not fearing those in power. God gave us lives and liberty – the liberty to speak our minds and live freely accordingly.

The debate and the root of the idea
A perennial view of Ethiopia as a nation of one culture and one ethnic owner suffered a serious blow by, among many, the 1974 revolution and the emerging Qube Generation. As a result of these severe blows, the old claim to owning Ethiopia seems to have been reduced to a claim of sole custodianship of Ethiopia. For this newfound moral comfort to have some psychological validity, the image of Ethiopia needed to be redefined, and friends and enemies re-compartmentalized. In the process, heroes and antiheros, visions and altruisms, virtuous and evils … got entangled in a manner that can be truly confusing for an outside observer. A centennial death of emperor Menelik, a leader known for his brutality during his wars of expansion in the 1880s, is widely debated among Ethiopians in the context of this obscured paradox.

Identity has always been at the core of human socio-political evolution. The institution of slavery was based on identity. Imperialism took place at the expense of different identities. Today, democratic governments around the world struggle to address questions of identity.
Despite this fact, some elites deny the relevance of identity as a strong force for political organizing. For example, in the former Soviet Union, identity was treated as a primordial human nature – a false consciousnesses that ought to be settled through the elimination of classes. But the end of Cold War and the rise of national independence movements disproved communism’s disdain for identity politics.

"Amhara, or, as we have become accustomed to called them, "Abyssinians," constitute the latest, military and official population of these regions and are scattered among them rather uniformly. The origin of these people has still not been accurately established; and, with regard to this question, there are only hypotheses, often contradictory. Some authors call all three groups "Cushitic". Others, considering the first two cushitic, count the Abyssinians as of Semitic race. But to call Oromo and Sidamo descendants of Cush, the son of Ham doesn't mean anything at all. Why between the ones and the others is there such a huge difference with regard to culture and customs and language? where did the ones and the other come from?

Looking back to the tortuous road the Oromo liberation came through, one can understand how time flies. All started underground – hidden from friends and enemies sights. The objective was to form an organization to fend off servitude, humiliation and degradation. Activists used to disseminate their ideas with handwritten fliers and oral messages. With change of time, they used alcohol duplicators and stencils. Computer printers are of recent history. Distributions were done by human errands. Now, facsimiles, wireless printers, copy machines and the use of internet as a vehicle of communication had changed efficiency and effectiveness of agitation and broadcasting. The words: blogging, twitter, Facebook, cellphones were beyond the imagination of the pioneers of the Oromo struggle back then. In that way, they formed an organization they named the Oromo Liberation Front and set a goal for it in a political program. Then, the process of fending off oppression commenced. They were farsighted; no one has aimed at disproving their visionary guidelines, except for the pusillanimous revisionists. Let us live to the imagination of readers how meetings were conducted, how many paid their well-being, parts of their bodies and their lives for the cause – and how may dropped out to reach where the Oromo revolution stands today?

A recent social media campaign against Ethiopia's Heineken-owned Bedele Brewery, over its planned sponsorship of a yearlong musical tour for controversial Amharic singer Tewdros Kassahun, has forced the premium beer maker to drop the agreement.

They went in a bid to escape poverty, but few really succeeded, even if they did find work. Many were abused by their employers. Now, 144,000 Ethiopians have returned home, deported from Saudi Arabia, which began a crackdown on undocumented foreign workers in November 2012.
The authorities in Ethiopia were expecting migrants to return, but, anticipating a mere 30,000, they set aside just US$2.6 million to help with reintegration.

Dear friends,
Time does seem to pass ever more quickly. Has it really been a year since the HRLHA office last shared its thoughts on the occasion of the 2013 New Year? The fact is our attention is totally consumed by the job we are doing. For those who are languishing in prisons simply because they hold different political views from those of the ruling party in Ethiopia, for those Ethiopians and others who escaped from fear of persecution and are in refugee camps or live on the streets of the countries they have taken asylum in – looking for their daily slice of bread, even a minute is too long. Soon, we all will be joining together to welcome a new year with another new hope to do better. We must recognize the fact that doing better doesn’t happen simply because we wish it to be true. Rather, first we need to take our time and assess this past year’s achievements or losses, and compare them against the promises we made as the year began. In short, it is a time for “self-analysis.”

The sources suggest that more than 90 percent of the Maji or Dizi, about 80 percent of the Gimira, between third thirds and three quarter of the Kaficho and about half of the Oromo population had lost their lives as the consequence of the conquest and colonisation The small kingdom of Walaita also lost a large proportion of its inhabitants. An Abyssinian expedition in 1894 slaughtered about 119,000 men, women and children (Prouty, 1986:115) in less than two weeks.

ኢሳት ቲቪ በዛሬ ስርጭቱ እንደዘገበው በሞያሌ ከተማ የኦነግ ታጣቂዎች የፈጸሙትን ጥቃት ተከትሎ ከተማዋ በመከላከያ ሰራዊት ስትታመስ ዋለች። ባለፈው ረቡእ ታጣቂዎቹ ከቀኑ 10 ሰአት ገደማ ወደ ከተማዋ በመግባት 3 ጠባቂዎችን በመግደልና አንደኛውን ታጣቂ መሳሪያውን በመቀማትና ልብሱን በማስወለቅ ” ሂድና ለአለቆችህ ንገር” በማለት ጉዳት ሳያደርሱበት መልቀቃቸውን የከተማዋ ነዋሪዎች ገልጸዋል። ታጣቂዎቹ አንድ ድግን መትረጊስ፣ አንድ ላውንቸርና አንድ ባዙቃ ማርከው ወስደዋል። ይህንን ተከትሎ በአካባቢው የደረሱት የመከላከያ ሰራዊት አባላት አንዳንድ የከተማ ነዋሪዎችን እየደበደቡ ሲያሰቃዩ መቆየታቸውን ጉዳት የደረሰባቸው ሰዎች ለኢሳት ገልጸዋል።

ባለፉት ዘመናትም ሆነ ዛሬ በኢትዮዽያ ኣመሰራረት ላይ በውስጣ በሚኖሩ ሃዝቦች መካከል መግባባት የለም። የሃገሪቷን ስልጣን በሃይል የያዙት ወገኖች “ሃገር የማቅናት ስራ ሰራን እንጂ, የፈጸምነው በደል የለም;” እያሉ በሃገር ማቅናት ስም የተፈጸሙ ግፎችን ይክዳሉ። ለምንም ኣላማ ይሁን የተገፉ፣ ነጻነታቸውንና ክብራቸውን የተነጠቁ ህዝቦች ደግሞ በሃይል ሃገራችንን ተነጠቅን እንጂ ወደን ኣይደለም በማለት የተነጠቁኣቸውን መብቶች በማስመለስ ለእኩልነት፣ ለነጻነትና ለፍትሕ ይታገላሉ።

በነዚህ ሁለት ተጻራሪ ሃሳቦች ምክንያት – “የሃገር ኣቅኚ” ወገንም ሆኑ ሌሎችም – በኣንድ ላይ ሰላም በማጣት ለዘመናት ስማቅቁ ለመኖር ተገደዋል። ኣለም ሰልጥኖ ጨረቃ ላይ በወጣበት ዘመን እንኳን የኣስተሳሰብ ለውጥ ለማምጣት የተሳናቸው ወገኖች ዛሬም ቀድሞ የተበላሹትን ሁኔታዎች ለማስተካከል ከመስራት ይልቅ, የሕዝቦችን ቁስል የሚያደሙ ታሪኮችን ለማደስ እየተሽቀዳደሙ ይታያሉ።

As the year 2013 gives way to 2014, we, members of the Oromo Democratic Front (ODF), wish our fellow Oromo as well as all the other peoples of Ethiopia a Happy New Year! The launching of the ODF in 2013 heralded the entry of the decades-old struggle of our people for self-determination into a brand new phase. This re-articulation of the objectives of the Oromo struggle for self-determination is predicated on forging a close relation between our quest for our national rights and the struggle for same rights by all those living in our proximate environment. We proceeded from the deeply held conviction that justice is indivisible as attested to by the now renowned observation that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

እንደሚታወቀው የዳግማዊ ምኒልክን 100ኛ የሙት ኣመት ለመዘከር በበደሌ ቢራ ስፖንሰርነት ቴዲ ኣፍሮ ሊያቀርብ ያቀደውን የሙዚቃ ኮንሰርት በጽኑ በማውገዝ ያገር ቤቱም ሆነ ዳያስፖራው የኦሮሞ ወገን እንዲሁም ቁጥራቸው ቀላል ያልሆነ የኦሮሞ ወዳጆች መጠነ ሰፊ የተቃውሞ ዘመቻ ላይ ይገኛሉ። እስካሁን ይህ ጽሁፍ በሚዘጋጅበት ሰኣት እንኩዋን #BoycottBedele በሚል ርእስ በማህበራዊ ሚድያዎች ላይ የተያዘው ዘመቻ 40,000 ገደማ የሚሆኑ ግለሰቦችን ኣሳትፏል። የተሳትፎው ቁጥር በከፍተኛ ፍጥነት እየጨመረ በመሄድ በኢትዮጵያ የማህበራዊ ሚድያ ኣጠቃቀም ታሪክ ውስጥ የመጀመሪያውን ደረጃ ይዟል። ይሄም ዝም ብሎ ጩሄት ሳይሆን ጉዳዩ የሚመለከታቸውን ወገኖች ትኩረት ስቦ የተሳሳተውን ኣቅዋማቸውን መልሰው እንዲያስተካክሉ ተጽእኖ ሲያሳርፍባቸው እየታየ ነው።
