Ethiopia’s government illegally detained at least 5,000 members of the country’s most populous ethnic group, the Oromo, over the past four years as it seeks to crush political dissent, Amnesty International said. 

Victims include politicians, students, singers and civil servants, sometimes only for wearing Oromo traditional dress, or for holding influential positions within the community, the London-based advocacy group said in a report today. Most people were detained without charge, some for years, with many tortured and dozens killed, it said.

In Ethiopia, foreign investment is a fancy word for stealing land

It’s been called by some to be a new form of colonialism. Others say it is outright theft.

Since 2000, over 37 million hectares of land, mainly in the world’s poorest nations, have been acquired by foreign investors “without the free, prior, and informed consent of communities” in what, according to Oxfam and other organizations, constitutes a “land grab.” It’s a portion of land twice the size of Germany, according to researchers.

More than 60% of crops grown on land bought by foreign investors in developing countries are intended for export, instead of for feeding local communities. Worse still, two-thirds of these agricultural land deals are in countries with serious hunger problems. A report by the University of Virginia in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Milan says that a third to a fourth (pdf, p. 1) of the global malnourished population, or 300 to 550 million people, could be fed from the global share of land grabs.

A few weeks ago, my friend and I were discussing the dangers of Ebola to the Horn of Africa. Long story short, we both felt the virus would come to Ethiopia via Ethiopian Airlines, and that it would gradually spread to other countries in the region months later.

Yesterday, a report claimed there are four suspected cases of Ebola in Addis Ababa, and that the virus allegedly came from an unnamed West African diplomat who flew in to the country with Ethiopian Airlines.

While numerous carriers have suspended flights to regions suffering from an Ebola outbreak, Ethiopian Airlines remains the only carrier in East Africa to continue several flights daily to these affected regions.

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) strongly condemns the sentencing of Abde Jemal, a fourteen-year-old minor, in adults’ court to four years in prison and $700.00 Birr fine for allegedly inciting people to political violence. According to HRLHA’s correspondents, Abde Jemal was arrested by the security agents while tending his parents’ cattle out in the field. HRLHA has learnt that Abde Jemal was severely beaten up (in other words, physically tortured) following his arrest by members of the security force in order to coerce him into confessing in court to the alleged crime. To begin with, this was allowed to happen despite the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child 1990, to which Ethiopia is a signatory, and which clearly states under Article 37(a) that State Parties shall ensure that “No child shall be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment”; and additionally guarantees under article 40, sub-article 2(a) that every child alleged as or accused of having infringed the penal law should … “Not be compelled to give testimony or to confess guilt.”

Transparency International data shows Ethiopia suffers from high levels of bribery

Transparency International said today that contrary to recent reports, it has not ranked Ethiopia as the least corrupt country in Africa.

Data from the anti-corruption group’s research shows that Ethiopia’s citizens and institutions suffer from high levels of bribery.  

Transparency International’s Global Corruption Barometer 2013, a public opinion survey published in July 2013, showed 44% of respondents in Ethiopia who had come into contact with one of eight public services reported having paid a bribe.

A 1917 photo (i.e. a photo taken before the erection of the Menelik’s Statue in 1930 at Birbirsaa /Piazza in Finfinne) shows Odaa Ya’aa Gulelee (i.e. the Assembly Site of the Gulelee Oromo tribe.) That’s exactly what our forebears told us in their history. According to the history, the Odaa was cut down to build the statue of Menelik II, which now stands at Piazza (if front of the church shown in the photo). This Odaa (the holy sycamore tree) used to be where the original inhabitants of this part of Finfinne (i.e. the Gulelee Oromo tribe) used to hold their periodic assemblies per the Gadaa System before their conquest by Menelik of Ankober.

የትግላችን ጅማሬዉና ፊጻሜዉ ፣ መነሻዉና መድረሻዉ ፣ዉጥኑናግቡ - ሁለነገሩ የሕዝባችንን ነጻነት ማረጋገጥ ነዉ።ይህ የሕዝባችን ነጻነት ሺዎች የተሰዉለት፣ሚሊዮኖች የሚዋደቁለት፣ኣእላፍ የታሰሩላትና የሚሰቃዩለት አሁንም ሚሊዮኖች ለገቢራዊነቱ የሚሻሙበት ታላቅ ዓላማ ነዉና ከሕዝባችን የነጻነት አጀንዳ የቀደማ ኣንዳች ጉዳይ የለንም -የሕዝባችን ነጻነት ከምንምና ከማንም የላቃ ብቸኛ ጉዳያችን ሆኖ እስከፊጻሜዉ ይቀጥላል።

የኦሮም ሕዝብ ከተወራራሽ ወራሪ ኃይሎች አገዛዝ ተላቆ ብሔራዊ ነጻነቱና ሰብዓዊ ክብሩ እስክረጋገጥ ድረስ ፤እንድሁም የኦሮሞ ነጻነትና የኦሮሚያ ሉዓላዊነት ዕዉን ሆኖ ብሔራዊ ሰንደቁ በዓለም ለይ ተገቢዉን ስፍራ እስከሚይዝ ድረስ ከተያያዝነዉ የፀረ ባርነት ፊልሚያ መስመር ለኣፍታም እንኳ ቢሆን የሚያዘናጋን አንዳች ገደድ (concern) አይኖረንም። መታሰራችን መገደላችን መሰደዳችን ኣልያም ብረት አንስተን ለነጻነት ፊልሚያ መዉጣታችን ለዚህ ክቡር ሰአብኣዊ ተልዕኮ ነዉና ምንጊዜም በኩራት እናስበዋለን።

Some time in late 1960s, a representative from Pentecostal church arrived in Bahir-dar town, rented a little building and called it “the church” after undertaking some cleaning up work that took him few weeks. As the man was getting ready to hold the upcoming church ceremony on Sunday, the people of Bahirdar town brought down the entire house protesting the migration of Pentecostalism into the strong hold of the Orthodox church.

In July 2006, about 60 Oromo youth met in Minneapolis, Minnesota for what was initially planned as a leadership conference. At the end of the three-day gathering, which featured, among other activities, leadership exercises, social activities and speeches by invited guests, the attendees formed the International Oromo Youth Association (IOYA).

It was meant to serve as an umbrella organization for Oromo youth groups around the world (in part because most of the delegates at that conference came representing their local youth associations).

አብዛኛዎቻችን ቴዲ አፍሮን (ቴዎድሮስ ካሳሁን) የምናውቀው በመረዋ ድምፁና በሚያዜማቸው ‹መሳጭ መሳይ› ግጥሞቹ ነው፡፡

አንድ ግለሰብ ስለሚያስበውም ሆነ በተለያየ መንገዶች ስለሚሰነዝራቸው አስተያየቶች ማንንም የማማከር ግዴታ የለበትም፡፡ ነገር ግን በዘፈንም ሆነ በሌላ መንገድ የሚያስተላልፋቸው መልዕክቶችና አስተሳሰቦች ዕውነትን መሠረት ያደረጉና በሌሎች ዘንድ ምን ያህል ተቀባይነት ይኖራቸዋል ብሎ ደጋግሞ ማሰብን ይጠይቃል፡፡ 

እርግጥ ነው ቴዲ የሚለቃቸው ዘፈኖች ሊያስገኙ የሚችሉትን ኢኮኖሚያዊ ጠቀሜታዎችን በደንብ አስልቶ እንደሚያቀነቀንና የት ቦታ በምን ጊዜ ቢቀነቀኑ የበለጠ ገንዘብና ተቀባይነት ሊያመጡ ይችላሉ በሚል ስሜት እንደሚሠሩ ግልጽ ነው፡፡ ለዚህ ጽሑፍ መነሻ የሆነኝ ሰሞኑን በሆላንድ (አምስተርዳም) ባዘጋጀው የዘፈን ኮንሰርት ያቀነቀነው ዘፈን ግጥሞች ይዘት ነው፡፡ ግጥሞቹን እንመልከት፡፡
