I am not talking about reform because I hope that the TPLF can become democratic and more committed to a policy that protects the interests of Ethiopia and its peoples. That ship has sailed a long time ago. Rather, I expect the TPLF to think of its own interests in a consistently selfish manner, which selfishness points out that the best bet in the mounting uncertainties is to admit, albeit reluctantly, the necessity of reform.

Reason advises the following: lose absolute power to keep some of it! Indeed, the situation contains two choices and two choices only. Either you think that you can protect your interests by pursuing the path of absolute power and repression and run the risk of losing everything by generating a situation of generalized uprising, itself made inevitable by the refusal to concede anything, or you make concessions aimed at sharing power, and you compensate your loss with security and assurance that your interests will be protected. In other words, lose a bit to safeguard what is important, or keep the exclusive control of power and face the danger of losing everything.

(Nairobi) – Ethiopian security forces are violently suppressing the largely peaceful protests in the Oromia region that began in November 2015. Almost daily accounts of killings and arbitrary arrests have been reported to Human Rights Watch since 2016 began.

Security forces, including military personnel, have fatally shot scores of demonstrators. Thousands of people have been arrested and remain in detention without charge. While the frequency of protests appears to have decreased in the last few weeks, the crackdown continues.

The ongoing Oromo protests in Ethiopia, which began on Nov. 12, have entered a decisive phase. Locals describe West Arsi, where the protests re-erupted on Feb. 14, as a war zone.

At least 11 people and half a dozen government soldiers have been killed in a span of few days. Schools have been closed. Roadblocks have brought businesses and travel to a halt. With all semblances of civil administration erased, major towns and villages have fallen under heavy military occupation and a few had slid out of government control.

The latest flare-up comes weeks after the Ethiopian government claimed to have brought the disturbances in Oromia under control through dialogue and public participation. The unfolding events across West Arsi and in parts of Wallaga and Hararghe make clear that the continued militarization of nearly the entire state of Oromia is backfiring.

Please allow me to extend my greetings at a time when my heart is, once again, grieving for all the Oromo that are being killed, jailed and brutally assaulted by your security forces merely for demanding their legitimate constitutional rights. During the last four months, reports reaching us from the center, east, south and west of Oromia indicate that hundreds have been killed, thousands have been wounded and tens of thousands are being held in prisons or detention centers. Rarely have in the history of contemporary Ethiopia members of a particular nationality suffered brutality on such a scale and magnitude. The Oromo Democratic Front (ODF) would like to call upon you to take practical steps to right these wrongs and avert more calamitous developments. Moreover, these upsurges of protests, despite the heavy-handed crackdown, demonstrate that the 25 year old policy of deploying the security forces to suppress popular yearning for justice, equality and basic freedoms has failed. Surely, reconsidering this policy is way overdue.

New Book By Oromo Theologian and Intellectual Wake Jeo Gerbi Coming Soon: "Religion and Politics in the Horn of Africa: Evangelical Christianity and Politics in the Oromo Context in Ethiopia"

Wake Jeo’s new book, entitled “Religion and Politics in the Horn of Africa: Evangelical Christianity and Politics in the Oromo Context in Ethiopia,” will be released in March 2016. It is published at one of the popular publishing company which is named Forfattares Bokmaskin in Stockholm, Sweden.

About the Author

Wake Jeo Gerbi is an Oromo theologian and intellectual who was born in 1980 in Wallaga, Ethiopia. He is a preacher who has been actively involved in the Oromo people’s struggle for national self-determination starting from his elementary school age. Gerbi has diverse academic backgrounds. He received his MA in Theology and MA in Religion, Society and Global Issues from the Norwegian School of Theology. Currently, he is studying Intercontextual Theology while he is also taking courses from other academic areas like Law and Philosophy at the University of Oslo. He has written different articles and presented several papers at different conferences. In 2008, he had been teaching theology course on part-time bases at Mekane Yesus Seminary, in the Department of Music. He was also a part-time teacher of theology at Oslo International Bible College in Norway in 2012. Currently, he is serving as a volunteer Evangelist in the Oromo Evangelical Church in Oslo and lives with his wife, Bedane Bekuma, their daughter Wada and his siblings Ayantu, Bacha and Korsa.

Reflection of Activist and Political analyst Jawar Mohammed on TPLF's Spokesperson Getachew Reda's statement

I just read the statement by TPLF's Spokesperson Getachew Reda. 

1) He claims the attack against Agazi forces was undertaken by armed group. That is partially true. But who were these armed group? What is trying to hide is the fact that the federal police and Agazi soldiers were killed by joint forces of local government militia and Oromia Special Police ( fetno derash). Evidence to this is that the Agazi forces also killed several Oromia Special Police officers. Two of them are identified as Mustefa Hussien ( born and raised in same locality) and Ramadan Abdalla ( from East Hararge). ( These two individuals were erroneously described as civil servants due to loose translation (the source used the term 'mootummaaf hojjatan' whose direct translation is they work for government but we took it for civil servant). It was the Oromia security forces ( militia and special police) that disarmed the first contingent of Agazi forces who killed two protesters. When additional federal military arrived and attacked them trying to secure release of the Agazi hostages, the Oromia police distributed weapon to some of the protesters and responded by hit them from multiple positions killing 11 Agazi soldiers. The Agazi also killed several militia and Oromia special police. The two officers who are identified above were the only once whom the public were able to inspect their body. The rest of the deceased and wounded from both side were taken away to Awassa and Addis Ababa hospitals. These 'armed groups' were not some alien rebels but rather members of the regime's security who were armed and deployed by the rulers.

ወዳጄ አበበ ገላው ( Abebe Gellaw) ሰሞኑን በአፋን ኦሮሞ የጸፍኳትን አንድ ንባብ ወደ እንግሊዚኛ አስተርጉሞ በመለጠፉ ከልብ አምሰግናለሁ (የትርጉም ግድፈቶቹ እንዳለ ሆኖ)። ያቺ ጽሁፍ ይህን ያህል ተወዳጅ ከሆነች እነሆ እኔም ሃሳቧን ሰብሰብ አድርጌ በአማርኛ አቅርቤላችኋለሁ። ባጠቃላይ በ G7 ሰብሰባ ላይ የተንጸባርቁት ሀሳቦች ቢያን አራቱ ተቀባይነት እንደሌላቸው ነው ጽሁፏ የምትተነትነው።

1)"አሮሚያ የኦሮሞዎች ነች የሚለው ሀሳብ ትክክል አይደደልም" እዝህ ጋር ሊሰመርበት የሚገባ ነገር ቢኖር ይህ ድርጅት ስብሰበውን የጠራው ወይም ያከሄደው በአሁኑ ወቅት በኦሮሚያ ውስጥ እየተካሄደ ያለውን ህዝባዊ ንቅናቄ መሰረት በማድረግ በመወያየት ድጋፍ ለመድረግ በሚል የታሰበ ነው። ይሁንና በአንድ በኩል በህዝባዊ ንቅናቄው ውስጥ በቀጥታ በመሳተፍ ጉዳት የደረሰባቸውን ታጋዮች ከልብ እንደግፋለን እያሉ ከንፈር በመምጠጥ በሌላ መልኩ ደግሞ ታጋዮቹ አንግበው የተነሱተን መፈክር በመኮንን፣ ድጋፉም ሆነ ከንፈር መጠጣው የውሸት እንደሆና ያሳያል። ሁሉም ሰው ሊገነዘበው የሚገባው ጉዳይ "ኦሮሚያ የኦሮሞ ነች" የሚለው መሪ ሀሳብ በአሁኑ ወቅት በትግሉ ውስጥ ያለን የኦሮሞ ወጣቶች ያመጣነው ወቅታዊ መፈክር ሳይሆን የዛሬ አመሳ አመት ገደማ የኦሮሞ ተጋዮች ለነፃነታቸውና ለእኩልነት ትግል ሲጀምሩ የትግሉ ዋና መሰረት በማድረግ አንግበውት የተነሱት የሀገር በለቤትነት (mirga abbaa biyyummaa) ጥያቄ ነው። ኦሮሚያ የኦሮሞ ነች ስንል ኦሮሚያ የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ሀገር ነች ( Oromia is homeland of the Oromo people) ማለት ነው:: ይህንን መሰረታዊ ሀሳብ መቃወም ማለት የኦሮሞን ህዝብ መሰረታዊ የመብት ጥያቄ መካድ ብቻ ሳይሆን ንብረቱንና ሀገሩን ለመዝረፍ አላማ አንደላቸው አመላካች ነው። ኦሮሚያ የአሮሞ ካልሆነች ከወያኔ ጋር የአሮሞ ህዝብ ሰጣ ገበ እና ጥል ውስጥ ለመግባት ባልቻልን ነበር። የአፋር ክልል የአፋሮች፣ ሲዳማ የሲዳማዎች ስለመሆኑ ለመቀበል የሚያደግተው ቡደን መሬት ላይ ያሉትን እውነታዎች የማይቀበል በመሆኑ ከወቅቱ ጋር ለመራድ የይምሮውን software update ማድረግ ተገቢነት ያለው ይመስለኛል። ኦሮሚያ የኦሮሞ ነች ማለት ኬኒያ የኬኒያኖች፣ ኢትዮጲያኖች እንደ ማለት ነው። ይህ ማለት ኬኒያ ወይም ኦሮሚያ ውስጥ ሌላ ሰው መኖር ዜጋ መሆን አይችልም ማለት አይደለም። በሚገባ ይችላለ። የማይቻለው ሀገሬው ተገፍቶ የሀር ባለቤትነት መብቱን ተነጥቆ ሌላው ሊንደላቀቅበት ማሰቡ ነው። እናም ኦሮሚያ የኦሮሞ ነች የሚለውን መፈክር ልናፍርበት ሳይሆን በደማችን እውን ለማድረግ እየታገልንለት ያለ ህያው አላማችን ነው። ይህን አላማችንን የሚቃወም ካለ ከኦሮሞ ጋር መስራት አለመቻሉ ብቻ ሳይሆን ፀረ-ኦሮሞ በመሆኑ አጥብቀን አንታገለዋለን። ( Note: ኦሮሚያ የኦሮሞ ነች ማለት እና ኦሮሚያ ለኦሮሞውች ማለት ለየቅል ነው። የአበበ ገላው ተርጓሚ 'የ'ን በ 'ለ' በመተካት ስህተት ውይም ቅጥፈት ፈጽሟል)

In the last article I posted, titled “Unity Overrides Everything,” I urged the Amhara to join the ongoing Oromo protests even if their reluctance is understandable in the face of the protests being confined to ethnic issues. Some of my readers did not like my appeal, arguing that the protests did not assume a national content and were anything but inclusive. In the many emails I received, the absence of references to Ethiopia and Ethiopian people was cited as the main reason that prevented and still prevents the Amhara from closing ranks with the Oromo.

ግንቦት 7 ከቀደሙት ድክመቶቹ ትምህርት ይቀስም ይሆናል ብለው ተስፋ የጣሉበት ኣንዳንድ ወገኖች ነበሩ። በተለይም ከኦሮሞ ድርጅቶች ጋር ተቀራርቦ ለመስራት ሳንካ ፈጥሮ የቆየውን የፀረ ብሄር ማንነት ኣቅዋሙን ያለሳልስ ይሆናል ብለው የገመቱ ኣንዳንድ ሰዎችን ኣውቃለሁ። ነገር ግን እኔ እንደ ኣንድ የቀድሞው የኦነግ ኣመራር ኣባል በዶክተር ብርሃኑ ንግግር ውስጥ ያየሁት ለውጥ የለም። ድርጅቱ ዛሬም የብሄር ማንነትን እንደ ኣፍራሽ ፖለቲካ መመልከቱን እንደቀጠለ በሊቀመንበሩ ንግግር በሚገባ ተንጸባርቁዋል። በዚህ ላይ ዶክተር ብርሃኑ ሲናገሩ ‘የዘውግ ማንነት’ ፖለቲካን የወለደው የዴሞክራሲ እጦት ስለሆነ ዴሞክራሲ ከሰፈነ ‘የዘውግ ፖለቲካ’ ተወግዶ ወደ ዜግነት እኩልነት ፖለቲካ መሸጋገር እንደሚቻል ያላቸውን እምነት ገልጠዋል።
