I am very pleased to be invited today to reflect on the Oromo martyrs’ day in a foreign land, far away from Oromia. Every nation is proud of its heroism and commemorates its heroes and heroines who bravely fought for its liberation and national independence. So what is heroism in the context of the Oromo national struggle? Why do we celebrate Oromo heroism in general and the Oromo martyrs’ day in particular? Who were and are our patriots who deserve our recognition and commemoration? Are these heroes and heroines only political leaders or all Oromos who have paid necessary sacrifices for the liberation of our people and our country? In my discussion, I try to answer all these questions.

RIYADH — The Ethiopian government is planning to take serious steps to crack down on gangs that smuggle Ethiopian citizens into the Saudi borders and will cooperate with Saudi authorities toward achieving this goal, said the Ethiopian Ambassador to the Kingdom, an Arabic daily reported.
Muhammad Hassan said the Ethiopian Embassy acknowledged that some Ethiopians have been involved in crimes but rejected an alleged media campaign that he claimed labeled all his fellow citizens as criminals when there is no evidence.

Describing her ordeal, which she shared with five other female students, she is quoted as saying: “Every night, they took all of us girls to [interrogations]. They would separate us and beat us. The second time they took me, they raped me… All three of the men raped me, consecutively”.

(Washington, DC) – The World Bank’s board should support an internal investigation into allegations of abuse linked to a World Bank project in Ethiopia, Human Rights Watch said today.
The Inspection Panel, the World Bank’s independent accountability mechanism, has recommended an investigation into whether it has violated its policies in a project linked to the Ethiopian government’s resettlement program, known as “villagization.” Villagization involves the forced relocation of some 1.5 million Ethiopians, including indigenous and other marginalized peoples, and has been marred by violence. The board is scheduled to meet on March 19, 2013, to consider the Inspection Panel’s recommendation.

The faction's most senior and considered by many to be the backbone of the group, the duo not only resigned from their leadership posts but also rescinded their membership in the organization.
"We hoped to resolve differences within the organizational framework,"Tuko told OPride by phone from Washington. "In the absence of respect for organizational structures, what is left is personalized leadership."

While India’s Grievance Redressal Bill was forged in the fire of public protest, Ethiopia chose to incorporate anti-corruption provisions in its criminal code.
“Article 416 of the criminal code deals with Undue Delay of Matters,” said an official of the Ministry of Justice. The provision penalises officials who deliberately delay providing a service for a bribe. The erring official can be sentenced to up to five years of rigorous imprisonment under the law.

The Ethiopian government calls this program the “Commune Center Development Plan and Livelihood Strategy” and claims it is designed to bring scattered rural populations closer to schools, health clinics, roads, and other public services. But the Commune Center program has been marked by a string of human rights abuses linked to government attempts to clear huge tracts of land for foreign investors. According to testimony collected by Human Rights Watch and other groups over the past two years, the relocations have involved beatings, imprisonment, torture, rape, and even murder. In many of the new “villages” the program has created, the promised services do not exist. Deprived of the farms, rivers, and forests that once provided their livelihoods, many people fear starvation, and thousands have fled to refugee camps in Kenya and South Sudan.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says it is preparing to relocate thousands of South Sudanese refugees stranded at Ethiopian border villages.

The relationship between the Ethiopian Muslim community and the government has always been on a delicate balance reached by a compromise made by the Muslim community. For the most part, given the authoritarian rule the country is under, the Muslim community tolerated the government’s unconstitutional involvement in their religious affair and institutions. In particular, the Muslim community has, for long time, been unsettled by the government’s heavy-handed involvement in the supposedly independent Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council commonly known as Majlis. Consequently, the Majlis have been as ineffective in executing the tasks entrusted by the community. However, it was not this specific circumstance that gave way for the growing protest in the country that has been going on for more than a year.

On the Passing Away of Jaarraa Abbaa-Gadaa

Like many compatriots at home and abroad, I heard with extreme sadness the passing away of the great national hero of Oromia Jaarraa Abbaa-Gadaa on the morning of 3 March 2013. His death in exile partly makes the sadness at the loss of this colossal national leader even more painful. But the fact that he died as un-compromised and unstoppable combatant as ever actively engaged in the liberation struggle is quite heartening.
My personal acquaintance with Jaarraa goes back to my days in high school, when in cooperation with his close friend Ahmed Yusuf, he undertook systematic politicising and organising of junior and senior secondary school students in the city of Harar. Abdulkarim (as Jaarraa was known then) and Ahmed were at the time seniors at the Medhane Alem Secondary School. In series of meetings Jaarraa spoke about the trials and tribulations the Oromo people under malign imperial rule with touching eloquence, emphasising the responsibility of the new generation to organise themselves for national resistance and to fight for the freedom of the Oromo nation.

Abdulkarim Ibrahim Hamid, who is popularly known as Jarra Abba Gadaa, was a long-standing Oromo nationalist. His death a few days ago was a great loss for his family, for all those who knew him, for our people and for all freedom loving people everywhere. He was an exceptional person, who was driven with passion for freedom and human dignity of his people.
Jarra understood the connection between the conquest of the Oromo and the unmitigated attack on their cultural heritage. The purpose of that attack was to make the Oromo feel inferior in terms of their language, culture, history, way of life, political and cultural institutions. As a result of their conquest during and after 1880s the Oromo lost their sovereignty and freedom. With that they lost their land, their human dignity, as they were subjugated socially, dominated politically, exploited economically and dehumanized culturally. They also lost their pride as a people.

We are greatly saddened by the death in exile of Jarra Abba Gada (Abdulkarim Ibrahim), one of the trailblazers in the Oromo people's struggle for freedom. Jarra was the bravest of the brave. He took up arms to fight the Ethiopian rulers who continued to subjugate Oromia and oppress its people. In his young age, he found it unacceptable to tolerate the oppression, exploitation, and abuse of the Oromo people in the hands of successive Ethiopian rulers. Deciding to give up everything in life for the sake of liberating the Oromo people, the young Jarra joined the Bale resistance and later helped found the Oromo Liberation Army.

At least 20 people died this weekend in an outburst of violent ethnic clashes on the border of the Benishangul region and the region of Wallagaa, Oromia, in West of Ethiopia: armed militia of the Gumuz ethnic group have been attacking and killing unarmed Oromo civilians. Although the Ethiopian government has deployed its police forces, they remain witness to the raging killings, instead of stopping the killers.

In her recent commentary in the New York Review of Books, “Obama: Failing the African Spring?”, Dr. Helen Epstein questioned the Obama Administration for turning a blind eye to human rights violations in Africa, and particularly the persecution of Muslims in Ethiopia. She argued that “After more than four years in office… Obama has done little to advance the idealistic goals of his Ghana speech.” In fact, she finds the Administration playing peekaboo with Paul Kagame, the Rwandan dictator and puppet master of M23 (the rebel group led by Bosco Ntganda under indictment by the International Criminal Court) which has been wreaking havoc in Goma, (city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Youweri Museveni, the overlord of the corruptocracy in Uganda. With the convergence of the ‘war on terror’ with the war on political adversaries, draconian justice has returned with a vengeance in Ethiopia. Just as authoritarian and racist regimes during the Cold War used the fight against communism or imperialism for the repression of political dissent; the regime in Ethiopia is using the ‘fight against terrorism’ as a framework for justifying the liquidation of democratic mobilization, and political dissent.

The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) strongly condemns the academic dismissals and suspensions of ten students of Addis Ababa University from their studies on February 21, 2013 upon their return to the University to resume their studies after a two-week break following the end of the first term exam. According to information obtained through HRLHA informants, this purely racial and politically motivated decision handed down by what is known as the discipline committee of the University was connected with the incident that took place in January 2013 between the Tigre and Oromo students. Various sources, including the HRLHA, have reported that the clash between the two groups of students was triggered when some students of Tigre nationals posted posters containing derogatory messages that aimed at the Oromo people. In connection with this incident, HRLHA had then reported, under an urgent action entitled, “Beatings, Arrests and Detentions at Addis Ababa University”, that more than 100 Addis Ababa University students, the majority of whom were Oromos, were arrested and detained.
