An Ethiopian Muslim man, Jemaal Rahmaan, has been identified as one of the two dozen Ethiopians killed by ISIS. Jemaal, from Eastern Ethiopia, said to have volunteered to be taken with the Christian hostages with the hope of persuading the terrorists to let go of his friends.

This is not the first time comrades of different faith chose death over being separated. On April 15, 1981 a delegation of the Oromo Liberation Front leadership including their Chairman Magarsa Bari were captured by Somali militia. The militia asked the group to separate into Christian and Muslim promising to spare the later. The OLF leaders refused to identify their religious background and executed together. This interfaith bond until death is one of the reason why Oromos commemorate April 15 as National Heros Day ( Guyyaa Gootataa)
