The battle over the Oromo Liberation Flag: Part I

August 26, 2013 | By Rundaasaa Asheetee Hundee

The battle over the Oromo Liberation Flag between all those who claim to represent the Oromo people demonstrates how gross deception is employed with respect to representing the Oromo freedom. For example, peaceful means of struggle requires disarming oneself and compromising with the ruling Tigre clan. That means, any group or individual that agrees with the ruling colonizing Tigre force must agree with the resettlement program that the Tigre rulers are undertaking in Oromia, and they must support the resource exploitation and degradation even if it ultimately leads to resource-based conflicts between the native people and the new Arab and Indian settlers. Following this objective, one must stop calling one’s party or group “the FRONT”.

Telecoms in Ethiopia is Out of reach

August 23, 2013 | The Economist

The government expands the mobile-phone network but tightens its grip

Ethiopia has Africa’s last big telecoms monopoly. The absence of competition has seen a country of more than 80m lag badly behind the rest of the continent in an industry that has generally burgeoned alongside economic growth. Mobile-phone penetration, which averages 70% of the population elsewhere in Africa, is closer to 25% in Ethiopia. A paltry 2.5% of Ethiopians have access to the internet, compared with 40% in neighbouring Kenya.

Ethiopia’s authoritarian leaders are as keen as any on the economic benefits of modern telecoms but fear the political ramifications; pesky dissidents become even more irritating when wired. That explains a $1.6 billion agreement with China’s two leading telecoms-equipment companies to upgrade its network. The deal with Huawei and ZTE will preserve Ethiopia’s state dominance and further put off the opening up of one of Africa’s largest economies.

Polio Spreads to Ethiopia

No to Dr. Fikre Tolossa's Unethical Prescriptions!

August 21, 2013 | By Bahru D. Bayisa*

Many pro-Ethiopian unity protagonists are utterly shameless and intellectually dishonest. They would say and write anything as far as it perpetuates the myth that the Oromo people are Ethiopians. In his dubiously esoteric letter to Dr. Beyan Asoba, the self-belittling Dr. Fikre Tolossa writes that we are all sons and daughters of Ityopp'is', and that we should, therefore, denounce our true identity our language, history, and culture and adopt that which is not ours, namely the Ethiopian identity.

A False Sense of Glory

August 21, 2013 | By Kallacha Dubbi

A false sense of glory within the Ethiopian Diaspora politics is in the rise. This false sense of glory could be measured as a newborn emotion promoting the old Amhara-centric Ethiopian ethos by using the growing Diaspora media. In this old ethos, ironically, Amhara-centered Ethiopia is uniquely perceived and promoted as the only answer to Ethiopia’s historic problems including Oromos and other peoples of Southern Ethiopia. By Amhara-centered Ethiopia, we understand a country whose socio-politics and culture is dominated and represented by that of one ethnic group, the Amhara. Since this recent political puff is strictly Diaspora based, the accompanying success on the home ground is miniscule. The ethos is also unique in that it tolerates no discourse with opposing views, and in some sense, one can say it is an art of blowing one’s own horn for one’s own pleasure.

The Conundrum of Ethiopianism, Part II

August 20, 2013 | By Yaadasaa Dafa

TO READ PART ONE CLICK HERE

I wrote the first article titled “The Conundrum of Ethiopianism” May 21, 2007 on Sudan Tribune. This short article produced waves of reactions from Ethiopianists who took Oromos for granted; and not to question the pseudo identity of Ethioiwinett. But that was/is the psychological manifestations of the politically bankrupted Ethiopian Dabtaraas who managed to keep the colonized people in Ethiopia in darkness, and in the far fetched illusions. But the occupied Nations within the colonial empire of Ethiopia organized themselves in various political form and shapes to make sure their yoke of suppression will yield to its final predicament. As far as the Oromo Nation is concerned, the people of Oromo waged/waging the journey for the freedom of their people and lands from the alien-Ethiopian colonization starting from the day they were colonized.

Grooming Personalities for Worthless Head of State

August 20, 2013 | By T Tolera

The Head of State, the presidential post in Ethiopia, has been a compensating excuse left to satisfy or neutralise an ethnic question for power. It has been dramatized, romanticized and traditional left for Oromo to scramble. It all started out with now a fierce critic of and prominent opposition to TPLF-led regime Dr. Negasso Gidada. Dr. Nagaso resisted a top-down command over his little constitutional power and revolted and broke away from Meles Zenawi, the late PM. Then comes Obbo Girma Woldegorgis, a personality of tabloids and popular jokes. I think Obbo Girma has exceeded the expectations of TPLF. The closest he appeared to have a power was when he wrote ‘shimigilina’ letter to the former pope of Ethiopian Orthodox Church in exile to mediate his restoration following the death of Abuno Paulo [the tyrant pop]. But then TPLF ordered him to denying he wrote the letter to VOA. Obbo Girma takes refuge in others’ idea and channels the will and orders of his masters. He proved to be a reliable partner and subordinate to TPLF through his unquestionable skill of obeying commands. I think we need to give him a credit for that. Nobody can do that good!

Year After Leader Dies, Ethiopia Is Little Changed

August 20, 2013 | Associated Press | By KIRUBEL TADESSE

Residents in Ethiopia's capital awoke to the sound of a 21-gun salute Tuesday to mark the first year anniversary of the death of long-time ruler Meles Zenawi.

The ritual underscores the approach Meles' successors have employed during the last year: a continued lionization of the late prime minister, whose portrait still appears in every public office across the country.

Candlelit vigils and the launch of over two dozen parks were organized across the country for the late leader. In the capital a cornerstone for the Meles Zenawi Memorial Museum was laid in a televised ceremony.

Adoptive parents on trial in Ethiopian girl’s death

August 20, 2013 | The Seattle Times

The trial of Larry and Carri Williams in Skagit County has revealed details of alleged child abuse, and highlighted gaps in protection of adopted children in Washington.

The victim: Hana Williams was
thought to be 13 years old.
Immanuel Williams’ face barely showed over the witness stand.

Many in the courtroom could see only the top of his chair swivel slightly and his eyebrows scrunch up in confusion.

Sign-language interpreters relayed questions to the deaf 12-year-old boy, and the answers flashed from his fingertips.

“Very often that happened,” he signed, “that I went without food.”

Ethiopian housemaid on hunger strike

August 20, 2013 | Arab News

An Ethiopian housemaid went on hunger strike in Madinah in an effort to return to her country as soon as possible.

Khaled Al-Harbi, the sponsor of the housemaid, told Arab News that the maid arrived in Saudi Arabia on the fourth of Ramadan.  “We have nothing to say against her,” Al-Harbi said. “She worked diligently since her arrival. Just two days ago she suddenly went on hunger strike and said she wanted to go back to her country as soon as possible.”  “I was concerned because she might die,” he said. “So I went to the employment office and reported the matter to them, but they refused to receive her. They told me to go to the begging fighting office, who also declined to receive her. They told me that I must turn the housemaid to the police.

Oromiyaa is under forced Ethiopian occupation for over a century. For this reason Oromo nationals carry her passport for concerns of international relations. Among the Oromo there are some that are not yet liberated from doubt that Oromiyaa can be a self sustaining entity. For this reason their lives are filled with wavering and lack of commitment. At times they roll on with those determined to establish independent republic of Oromiyaa. At other times they say it would be enough for us if we are granted Ethiopian citizenship as equals. To know where they stand is becoming as baffling as where they are not.

High Profile Corruption Case Finally to Go to Court

August 13, 2013 | By Elleni Araya  | Addis Fortune Government Press

After 90 days in police custody over allegations of corruption, Melaku Fenta, the former director general of the Ethiopian Revenues & Customs Authority (ERCA), will face charges in the next 15 days. He will be tried along with most of the 63 high and mid-level tax officials and businessmen detained with him.

The arrests came as part of a recent crackdown on high level tax officials and businessmen launched by the Federal Ethics & Anti-Corruption Commission (FEACC), in early May 2013. The timeframe was set on Friday, August 9, 2013, when the Commission's investigators informed the Second Criminal Bench of the Federal High Court that they had released 10 people on bail. This was in addition to the six already released previously.

A lynching mob or authentic patriots? A rejoinder to Tedla Asfaw, Yilam Bekele and other Habesha bloggers

August 12, 2013 | By Dumessa Diimmaa*

After Al Jazeera produced a show in its weekly scheduled program called “The Stream” about the predicament of the Oromo nation in the Ethiopian empire, the Habesha iliterati went apoplectic! A certain Tedla Asfaw inflamed and soured the cyber sphere by posting a muddled and ignoble article accusing Jawar Mohammed for not declaring himself an Ethiopian first and an Oromo second!

Tedla’s nefarious aims and acrimonious intentions were to out Jawar as closet Oromo nationalist owing loyalty to ethnocentric politics while on numerous occasions before a large or important Habesha political, religious and social gatherings, he was masquerading as bona fide Ethiopian devoid of any ethnic hypocrisy or pretense! This is a total canard, I know Jawar and I have never observed him disguising nor concealing his identity to fit to the Habesha notion of Ethiopiawinet! He may have given speeches and analysis in Amharic depending on the nature and scale of the gathering, or composition of the audience.

Emergency Requires Urgency

The organized struggle for liberation started to take the first step with sacrifice of Oromo martyrs. With that, many remarkable achievements were registered. They gave for their people, the only precious thing they had – their lives – to enable all Oromo say, “I am an Oromo” instead of identifying themselves first with a tribe, region or religion. That broke colonialists spell put on them. That was one of the achievements in the first chapter of the struggle. It does not mean the objectives of activists and aspirations of the people has reached their desired goal with all the sacrifices. Those who survived the carnage and the new generation is expected to make more efforts and sacrifices to reach a victorious end. Reminiscing on past achievements alone cannot take one there. It requires urgency to secure the gains and proceed to the second chapter. When the struggle got started, activists had a clear objective and were indefatigable. But, with time, there were interference that blurred their vision and sucked their strength. Some, among pioneers who rebelled against the “kaayyoo,” had no alternative to offer in overcoming the difficulties encountered than whitewashing obsolete ideas. That proved OLF as the standard bearer of the Oromo revolution. OLF is spirit of the people that no one was able to corrupt though able to put it off balance. At this juncture of sluggishness, old enemies thought they got the opportune time to dismantle the nation. Oromo youth came out from all corners and told them that they can no more be silenced. All, from northern to southern hemispheres, told them in one voice “We are Oromo first.”

Ethiopia: Lives for Land in Gambella

August 11, 2013 |  By Graham Peebles*, Redress Online | News Analysis

To many people land is much more than a resource or corporate commodity to be bought, developed and sold for a profit. Identity, cultural history and livelihood are all connected to “place”. The erosion of traditional values and morality (including respect for human rights and environmental responsibility) are some of the many negative effects of the global neo-liberal economic model, with its focus on short-term gain and material benefit. The commercialization of everything and everybody has become the destructive goal of multinationals and corporate-driven governments.

“This is not the America I saw on TV. That was all green, with no snow.”

He quickly learned to master English, immersing himself in his studies at Minneapolis South High School. With help from Minneapolis’ Step-Up youth jobs program, he landed work as an assistant janitor at the American Swedish Institute on Park Avenue S.

Nairobi, August 9, 2013--The Committee to Protect Journalists is concerned about the arrest and week-long detention without charge of two journalists working for Radio Bilal, a station that has provided extensive coverage of ongoing anti-government protests staged by Ethiopian Muslims.

On August 2, security officials in the capital, Addis Ababa, arrested Darsema Sori outside his home and detained Khalid Mohammed as he headed to work, Radio Bilal Chairman Mohammed Hassen told CPJ. The journalists were taken to court the next day and remanded into custody while police continued their investigations, local journalists said.

ODF: Press Release on Eid al-Fitr and Killings in Kofale, Oromia Region

August 09, 2013 | A Press Release From Oromo Democratic Front (ODF)

We, members of the Oromo Democratic Front, wish our Muslim brothers and sisters in Ethiopia and throughout the world a very happy Eid al-Fitr. We congratulate each and every one of them for successfully completing a month-long period of fasting, religious devotion and fellowship.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims dedicate themselves to deep religious reflection, fasting and prayer in order to enhance the fellowship of family and community members. Such an exercise is best performed under conditions of peace and harmony, conditions that have been non-existent for Ethiopian Muslims now for almost two years. Hence, Muslims are celebrating this year’s Eid al-Fitr once again under a very challenging atmosphere.

Oromo Liberation Movements: where to from NOW???

August 09, 2013 | By Bakalcho Barii*

In their bitter and long experience under Abyssinian colonization, the Oromo’s and the Southern peoples of the Ethiopian empire have gone through a lot. The marginalization, exploitation and abuse under successive Abyssinian regimes targeted not only on their identity and culture, but also dispossessing of their resources by evicting them from their ancestral lands, and also levying hefty taxation to the central government to keep them impoverished so that they can be restricted and pre-occupied with worrying about where their next daily bread comes from and have no capacity to demand their economic, political rights they deserve according to their size and resources.

Ethiopian Development Destroying Lives

August 09, 2013 | Counter Punch

By Graham Peebles*

In many parts of the world development has become an invisible cloak under which all manner of “state sponsored” atrocities and human rights violations are being committed. Married to growth, development has been (largely) reduced to economic advancement – meaning maximizing Gross National Product (GNP) figures month on month, year on year, and turning over glowing returns to the insatiable global monetary bodies – The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) and – profit to private investors.

Ethiopian Muslims Stage Eid Protests

August 08, 2013 | VOA

Addis Ababa (Reuters):— Muslims in Ethiopia protested in the capital Addis Ababa during Eid al-Fitr prayers on Thursday, part of a two-year-old campaign against what they say is government interference in their religious affairs.

A heavy police presence around the city's stadium — the venue for morning prayers — marked a tense run-up to the Muslim holiday after clashes between Muslims and police killed up to five people last week in Ethiopia's south.

August 08, 2013 | OPride
Hundreds arrested, beaten, and tear gassed Thursday morning following nationwide Eid day protests, Muslim rights activists said.

Police began rounding up peaceful protesters returning home near the Ministry of Justice in Addis Ababa shortly after the Eid prayers concluded at the national stadium, according to eyewitness reports on Twitter. Those detained were ordered to sit on the ground inside the Ministry's compound, the reports said.

In the Spirit of Makkoo Bilii

August 08, 2013 | From: The Concerned Oromo Group, Public Relations Office

One is more likely to ask who Makkoo Bilii is. Presumably, many citizens of Oromia know very well about the Ethiopian colonial rulers like Tewodros/Kassa or Minilik, as opposed to knowing who Makkoo Bilii really was for reasons beyond the scope of this short paper. According to one of the celebrated Oromo Nation’s historians, Nagaasoo Gidaadaa, PhD, Makkoo Bilii was one of the glorious Oromo leaders from Maccaa. Many people say lots of things about him. Some refer to him as the expert of the Gadaa law; some say that he was a Prophet, yet others refer to Makkoo Bilii as Abbaa Bokkuu (the President), or Abbaa Duula (a leader of the War).

GADAA AS THE FOUNTAIN OF OROMUMMAA AND THE THEORRTICAL BASE OF OROMO LIBERATION

August 08, 2013 | By Asafa Jalata, Ph.D.*

Every society has its unique central organizing and ruling ideology and theoretical models in a given historical epoch that it uses as its lenses to look at and interpret the world and to survive freely and advance its civilization or ways of life without disruption from within and without. Ideology plays many roles in a society, and its essential function is to define and promote the political, material and cultural interests of a group, a nation, a social class, a state or other entities. Before the Oromo were colonized, they had also their central organizing and ruling ideology and theoretical models that were embedded in the gadaa civilization that organized and guided them as a society socially, culturally, religiously, politically, militarily, and economically. I advance the idea that without retrieving and developing the best elements of this civilization, the Oromo cannot fully develop Oromummaa (national culture, identity, and ideology) as their organizing and central ideology and their theoretical models of liberation to empower themselves as a nation in the twenty first century by recognizing and overcoming the devastating ideologies, behaviors, and theoretical models of their oppressors that have confused and disempowered them.

Ethiopian repression of Muslim protests must stop: AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

August 08, 2013 | AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

The Ethiopian government must end its use of repressive tactics against demonstrators, following initial reports of widespread arrests of Muslim protestors during this morning’s Eid al-Fitr celebrations, said Amnesty International today.

We are extremely concerned at reports coming out of Ethiopia this morning of further widespread arrests of Muslim protesters. The Ethiopian government’s ongoing repressive crackdown on freedom of speech and the right to peacefully protest has to end now,” said Claire Beston, Amnesty International’s Ethiopia researcher.

The same old poison over and over again: response to an article entitled “History 101: Fiction and Facts on Oromos in Ethiopia”…

August 07, 2013 | Dhugaa Bari (PhD student)

On July 29, 2013 an article entitled “History 101: Fiction and Facts on Oromos in Ethiopia (a guide for foreign journalists on Oromos and Ethiopian history)” was written by ‘Prof. Fekadu Lamessa’ (http://www.salem-news.com/articles/july282013/oromo-truths-fl.php).  The writer claims that the aim of his article is to offer “some corrections” to “inaccuracies or biased information” al Jazeera has published about Oromo nation and struggle recently. In this regard, he outlined four core points he considered as “inaccurate” about Oromo history that al Jazeera has extensively reported, and instead offered us what he thinks are ‘facts’. For him, i) Between late 1870s and 1900, half of all Oromos (around 5 million) were not killed because in the late 1880s even the total population of the Empire/Ethiopia were less than 5 million, and thus Menelik did not commit genocide against Oromos; ii) “Oromo people have never been a predominantly Muslim people”; iii) Arabs and Somalis were the one who labeled Oromos the derogatory word ‘Galla’, not Abyssinians, and iv) Oromos were never colonized by Abyssinians (Amhara). In this article, based on available historical evidences a critically evaluation of each of the four assertions Fekadu outlines is offered.

Preying and Praying: A Day and Night with the EPRDF

August 07, 2013 | By Faysal Qassim

During the day on August 3, 2013, the Ethiopian government was unusually busy in its anti-Muslim operations. As night time came, however, the government immediately took a likewise unusual pro-Islam face. The Ethiopian state TV aired a special congregational Muslim ritual held on the 27th of the Holy Month of Ramadan. This abrupt shift in the regime’s apparent behavior may surprise some, amuse others, but surely shock many.

Only Liberalisation Can Redeem Ethiopian Telecom

August 04, 2013 |  Addis Fortune (Ethiopian Government Press)

There seems to be no service that Ethiopians of all colours complain about more than telecommunications. A sector destined to live under the reign of the restructured ethio telecom monopoly, telecommunications remains the hotspot for the disappointments of the ever-growing population of the nation.

At the heart of the complaint matrix rests the quality of the services provided by the monopoly. All of the services that the corporation provides, ranging from landline telephones to broadband internet, witness the same magnitude of grumbles from consumers. The cyclic quality issue facing the services is unable to find any viable solution, even after a series of quick fixes tested by the ruling elite.
