A Note on Interpretations of the Scottish Referendum in Oromo Media

September 27, 2014 | By Mekuria Bulcha (Prof.)*

An interesting discussion is going on among Oromos about the relevance of the Scottish referendum of September 18, 2014, to the Oromo question. On one side, there are those who say that the Scottish referendum has little relevance to the Oromo situation. These point out great differences in the historical relations that the two nations have with the states from which they would separate. On the other side are those who argue that the referendum has relevance. While these paint exaggerated similarities between the Oromo and Scottish experiences under colonialism, they ultimately dismiss the Oromo struggle for independence and advise Oromo nationalists to work for democracy within Ethiopia. They argue that Oromo nationalists should drop the “misconception that democracy is given,” that “an empire cannot be democratized” and that Oromo should struggle to “earn” democracy within Ethiopia (See Gelan on OPride.com, September 17, 2014). That position is an old one. It is now used to direct Oromo nationalists to interpret the result of the Scottish referendum to mean that they drop their aspiration for an independent Oromo state. In this commentary, I point out that the Scottish referendum was not about achieving democracy (the UK is a democracy), but about the right the Scots have exercised to make their own choice. I argue that the main lesson we can draw from the referendum is that a nation or a people have the right to build their own state irrespective of the nature of the historical relationship they have with the state from which they will separate. Before entering into the discussion of the lesson Oromo can draw from the Scottish referendum, let us first look at some of the main contexts within which political independence has been claimed by different peoples in the past and is also being claimed today.

"Visit to Ethiopia doesn't mean Egypt agrees on dam project":-Egypt's Irrigation Minister

Irrigation minister visits dam's construction site, the first by Egyptian official

Egypt's irrigation minister has stressed that his visit to Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam doesn't mean that Egypt agrees with the ongoing project, Al-Ahram's Arabic News Website reported.
Hossam Moghazy had a tour with his Ethiopian and Sudanese counterparts at the site of the dam on Monday, the first by an Egyptian official since construction began in April 2011.

“A Criminal State: The Blackmailing of the Oromo Liberation Struggle for Freedom and Democracy”, the futile attempt of successive regimes of Ethiopia

It is a great privilege and honor for me to be among you today representing the Oromo Liberation Front. First of all, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the organizing committee for inviting OLF and having organized the 4th New world Summit that brought together the representatives of stateless states to discuss and share experiences about the potentials or obstacles that states are embroiling some genuine political causes today.

Ethiopia Made Up in Western Political Arena With Fake Name and Maps:- Part I

September 25, 2014 | By Khalid Nasser from Benishangul and Ahmed Abdi from Ogaden

The will of a nation cannot be broken, no matter how long it takes, at the end their will prevails. Therefore, the Benishangul People’s dream to be independent will soon be a reality, it does not matter what you want and think, what is matter for us is what we want, and how we would like to achieve it.
Colonization is not a thing to be proud of because it occurs after aggression, pressure, invasion and conquest. In fact many people die during colonization conquest that makes most of us to believe that colonizers commit genocide with no remorse. However colonization is different from one country to another in certain ways, take for Example Hong Kong under British colony, the island has prospered, everyone get good education, received a good healthy system, equal opportunities and above all democracy, and another example that shows the good side of the western colonization in Africa is Sudan, the British policies in Sudan contributed significantly in abolishing slavery, creating a good governing system, which makes us believe that many countries were better off under European colonization, that does not necessarily mean we support the European colonization, but we would like to be objective and fair, as there is a dark side for being colonized, there is some advantages too, and if we weigh both we believe the advantages of civilized nation’s colonies are far more than disadvantages, because being colonized by a civilized nation is much better than being subjugated and oppressed by a primitive, backward, brutal and savage third world country such as Abyssinia (Fake Ethiopia)

Ethnic Composition of Employees of the Ethiopian Federal Government

September 19, 2014 | Gulelepost.com

This chart, sent to us by well placed source, shows ethnic composition of employees of Ethiopia’s  federal government. The data shows huge disparity when compared to ethnic composition of the country, even if we use the disputed 2007 census. Amharas make up 51% percent of the employees, which is twice the size of their proportion of the country’s  population. Oromos make up 12.7% which is one-fourth of their population size. Somalis, the third largest ethnic group in the country,  make up about 6.2% of the total population but  they only constitute just 0.07% of the federal government’s workforce.

SCOTTISH LESSONS FOR OROMO NATIONALISTS

September 17, 2014 | OPride.com | By Ayele Gelan*

In a landmark referendum on Sept. 18,  the people of Scotland will vote Yes or No to determine the future of their 300-year-old union with England.
The simplicity of the question and the answers are by no means indicative of the intensity of the debates and emotions in this campaign. There have been passionate debates over the years between the unionists and Scottish nationalists. The publicity of the campaigns has generated a lot of interest around the world. As a result, this week’s vote is being closely watched by Oromo activists and nationalists the world over who are still trapped in old empires. What lessons can be gleaned from the Scottish case for the decolonization of the Ethiopian empire and the Oromo people’s aspiration for an independent statehood?

Essence of the Scottish Referendum in the Eyes of an Oromo Nationalist

September 16, 2014 | By Boruu Barraaqaa

It is obvious that both supporters and opponents of the Oromian independence in Ethiopia are watching carefully what is going on in the UK. Both political entities have their own reasons for their respective wishes. Some Abyssinian elites could ridiculously try to resemble their cause to that of English elites, who were in the forefront of building the great nation, UK. However, there is no factual resemblance between the savage invaders from Abyssinia, and the most civilized, prosperous and THE LEADING democratic nation in the world. In spite of the fact that the British were once the brutal colonialist rulers in the world history, I don’t judge them by their history of yesterday in this context, but by who they are and what they are contributing for the betterment of our world today.

The dilemma of being citizens of Ethiopia and saluting the empire’s flag

September 16, 2014 | By Rundassa Asheetee Hundee

When we talk about history, our mind automatically switches to think that history is the basking afterglow of victory that one group scores against the other. We do that because groups or nations write complimenting their victory most warmly and by belittle the loser side. Special elation of such successes and enjoying the gratification they get from beating an opponent or the weak has been a part of human history through which the winners gain confidence and think of themselves as “born to rule” formidable force.

Imprisoning, Killing, Spying: Suppression of the Innocent Inside Ethiopia

September 06, 2014 | By Graham Peebles*

Wrapped in dishonesty, arrogance and paranoia, Ethiopia’s ruling regime is FOLLOWING a nationwide policy of violent suppression and constitutional vandalism.
It was the 24th June – midsummer’s day – in the adopted homeland of Andargachew Tsige, when he was detained by ‘Yemeni officials’ (State heavies in suits) whilst transiting through Sana’a to Eritrea. THE BRITISH citizen and leading Ethiopian political activist was quickly and quietly extradited to Addis Ababa where he was imprisoned on spurious charges of treason or some such trumped up, paranoid twaddle. He had been unfairly tried in absentia in 2009, when Amnesty report he was “sentenced to death for an alleged coup attempt. He was prosecuted in absentia again in 2012 on terrorism charges, alongside other prisoners of conscience, and sentenced to life imprisonment.”
