TPLF’s Master Plan for Mutilation of Oromiyaa Must Be Stopped Now

May 31, 2014 | gadaa.com | By Leenjiso Horo*

Over a century ago, during the campaign for the conquest of Oromiyaa, the Abyssinian emperors mutilated the limbs of Oromo men, women and children. Millions killed; hundreds of thousands sold into slavery; and remaining population lost their lands to the conqueror.  With the conquest, the Abyssinians made the Oromo socio-economic and political system illegal, and the feudal system was imposed on the Oromo people. It was a socio-political system entrenched in hereditary privileges. The core of feudalism was that, only the divinely anointed ruler held the “natural” right to own land, and only he/she could assign title to it. Emperor Haile Selassie I was among such rulers. He claimed his rule as a gift from the God. To this effect, his full title reads as: “His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, King of Kings of Ethiopia and Elect of God, Emperor of Ethiopia.”  He and his predecessors were the “owners” of the lands of the conquered countries, such as Oromiyaa. With this, millions of Oromo farmers were thrown off their land, and the land was assigned to the new settlers.

Ambo Protests: Spying the Spy?

May 30, 2014 | Jen & Josh in Ethiopia

After the protests and violence in Ambo, we fled to the capital city of Addis Ababa and stayed at a
little hotel called Yilma. Immediately, we started telling everyone about what happened in Ambo. We called and texted our friends, we talked to anyone at the hotel that would listen, and we posted things on Facebook. If we tell everyone about the protesters in Ambo being imprisoned and killed, surely it will stop, we reasoned.

The next day, two strange men - one tall with dark skin, the other short with lighter skin - struck up a conversation with us in the hotel restaurant.

South Sudan Conflict Destabilizes Ethiopia’s Regional Strategy

May 30, 2014 | World Politics Review | By Dr. Harry Verhoeven*

If the past century’s dominant image of Ethiopia was that of an impoverished, war-torn state, epitomized by the horrendous 1984-1985 famine in Tigray and Wollo provinces, the early 21st-century picture of the country is surely exemplified by the construction of the biggest infrastructure project anywhere in Africa: Mere miles from Ethiopia’s border with Sudan, nearly 8,000 workers and engineers are laboring seven days a week, 24 hours a day as part of a round-the-clock construction schedule to erect the nearly 560-foot-tall Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Arabsat locates jamming source in Ethiopian territories

May 29, 2014 | www.broadbandtvnews.com | By ROBERT BRIEL

Arab Satellite Communication Organisation (Arabsat) has announced that many TV channels on-board its fleet of satellites have been the subject of intentional jamming for the past week up to today.

Arabsat engineers conducted detailed analysis to identify the source of the jamming, it was confirmed that this interference was originating from Ethiopian territories. It is not clear which broadcasts are targeted this time.

Ambo Protests: A Personal Account

May 28, 2014 | Jen & Josh in Ethiopia | By Jennifer Prestholdt, Human rights lawyer, Wife and Mother of three.
These personal account by US Peace Corps volunteers confirms what we know happened in Ambo and contradicts the regime's version of the story. For instance the regime and shameful president of Ambo University was saying no student died. The Peace Corps account confirms that students were not only among those massacred, but in fact some were killed far away from the protest location. The volunteers state "Our two young neighbors – university students – had been hunted down by the federal police and killed in their home while the protest was on the opposite side of town." What happened in Ambo as else where, was preplanned, unprovoked murder campaign against Oromos.

THE NEED FOR FORMING A GLOBAL OROMO ACTIVIST NETWORK (GOAN) AND GUMII OROMIYAA (GO)

May 28, 2014 | By Asafa Jalata, Ph.D*

Although it was more or less ignored, this proposal was forwarded a decade ago to Oromo activists in the Diaspora. The current Oromo struggle led by the Oromo students in Oromia has fundamentally changed the attitudes and behaviors of the Oromo in the Diaspora. So I believe that the ongoing debate on how to continue the struggle in the Diaspora can benefit from this piece. Hence, without revising it, I reproduce the article below.

Why the Oromo Will Stop the AAMP by any Means, at any Cost The Struggle over Finfinnee is the Struggle for Oromia

May 25, 2014

By Professor Mekuria Bulcha*
PART ONE
The so-called Addis Ababa Master Plan (AAMP[1]) has ignited an Oromia-wide protest involving university and high school students. The TPLF-led Ethiopian regime has responded to the peaceful protests staged by Oromo students against the plan with tanks and live ammunition, killing dozens in the crowds. The protest, which started on April 24, 2014 at Jimma University, is joined not only by tens of thousands of the students of all the universities in Oromia but also tens of thousands of high school students and members of the local population in many cities, towns and villages. The voice of this massive Oromo rally against the AAMP cannot be silenced by bullets and tanks as in the past. It concerns not only the cause of the Oromo farmers in Central Oromia, whose livelihoods will be affected by the AAMP, but also that of all the Oromo farmers and pastoralists throughout Oromia whose farms and pasturelands have already been sold and are targeted to be sold to land grabbers by the present Ethiopian regime. In short, it concerns the survival of the Oromo as a nation.

DENVER - A man identified as a brutal Ethiopian prison guard after a chance encounter at a Colorado restaurant could spend up to 22 years in a federal prison after his sentencing Friday for immigration fraud.

Kefelgn Alemu Worku was convicted in October of assuming another man's identity and lying on U.S. immigration forms when he denied committing acts of political persecution.

When Enough is Enough: Rise up People of Ethiopia

May 23, 2014 | www.counterpunch.org | By GRAHAM PEEBLES*

There are tentative signs that the people of Ethiopia are beginning to organise themselves and stand up against the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) government, a brutal dictatorship, albeit one dressed in democratic western garb.

After 23 years of suppression at the hands of the EPRDF, simmering discontent and anger appears to finally be spilling over onto the streets. Robbed of hope, the people have had enough, enough of the wide-ranging human rights abuses. The denial of constitutional rights, the arbitrary imprisonments and torture, regime violence, the displacement of people from ancestral land, the partisan distribution of aid, and the rising cost of living.

Preliminary Remark

In this article I will reflect on the Biblical teachings in relation to the current Oromo people peaceful protest against the so called ‘Addis Ababa Integrated Master plan’. It attempts to justify the need of more actions to stop the human rights violations, extra judicial killings, and torturing engineered by the TPLF dictatorial government. Further, it urges the entire Oromo people to be more united than ever in order to enhance the revolutionary movements.

The Natural resurrection of the Oromo Nation’s ultimate question

May 22, 2014 | By Habte Dafa

It is human Nature not to be absolutely sure.  But that does not negate appreciating the present, while bearing in our minds of the prevailing potentials. It was the adversaries, as well as very few friends within the Oromo struggle that had unclear, but suspicious minds towards the path it was/is taking to reach its goal of Freedom.  But unfolding realities in Oromia dictates to the other direction:

Ethiopia crackdown on student protests taints higher education success

May 22, 2014 | The Guardian | By Paul O'Keeffe
Western backers of the Ethiopian education system should not ignore reports of violent clashes on university campuses
Oromia, Ethiopia, where at least three dozen people were
reportedly shot dead by security forces during student protests
Over the past 15 years, Ethiopia has become home to one of the world's fastest-growing higher education systems. Increasing the number of graduates in the country is a key component of the government's industrialisation strategy and part of its ambitious plan to become a middle-income country by 2025. Since the 1990s, when there were just two public universities, almost 30 new institutions have sprung up.
On the face of it, this is good news for ordinary Ethiopians. But dig a little deeper and tales abound of students required to join one of the three government parties, with reports of restricted curricula, classroom spies and crackdowns on student protests commonplace at universities.

Diaspora Speaks for Deliberately Silenced Oromos; Ethiopian Government Responds to UN Review

May 20, 2014 | The Advocates Post

When students in Ethiopia started protesting last month against the Ethiopian Government’s proposal to annex territory from the state of Oromia to facilitate the expansion of the capital city Addis Ababa, diasporans mobilized to show their solidarity. As federal “Agazi” security forces cracked down, opening fire on peaceful protesters, placing students on lock-down in their dormitories, and conducting mass arrests, Oromos around the world staged rallies and hunger strikes to raise international awareness and to call on the governments of the countries where they live to withhold aid and put pressure on the Ethiopian Government to respect human rights.

Finfinne, the seat of masters of Oromia, was established about 126 years ago. Since its establishment, Finifine has been stretching its size by taking the surrounding areas. Starting from Tullu Dalati, the hill on which the residence of the Prime Minister is found , Fifinne stretched to Akaki in the east, Gulale in the west, Garji in the south and Entoto in the north. Unlike the nine federal states of Ethiopia, Finfinne is not a member of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE).

ADDIS ABABA'S POORLY PLANNED DECENTRALIZATION AND #OROMOPROTESTS

May 18, 2014 | By Abel D. Ayele* | OPride

The Oromo student protests in Ethiopia, which began last month in opposition to Addis Ababa’s controversial expansion, continued this week.
Tens of people have been killed while hundreds were wounded or jailed since the protests started in April. On May 14, locals said at least three people were killed and more than 100 wounded in Nekemte town, western Oromia where federal Special Forces have besieged the regional Wallaga University. Protests have spread to neighboring Najjo and other parts of Oromia on Thursday.

What can nationals do to help the struggle back home?

Finfinnee is founded in Oromiyaa and so is indisputable part of it. Oromiyaa is under occupation for over a century. Finfinnee was turned into headquarters of the occupying force where Oromo was forced to serve with sweat and blood rather than getting benefit out of its formation.  After the overthrow of Darg the state of Oromiyaa and the interest it has in Finfinnee was formally recognized by the occupying regime and a sort of administrative structure was created for it.

THE SATELLITE TRANSMISSION OF OROMIA MEDIA NETWORK (OMN) HAS BEEN JAMMED

May 14, 2014 | Oromia Media Network (OMN)

We have learned that our regular transmission on ArabSat has been interrupted as of  04:38:00 GMT this morning. This is following the blocking of our website www.oromiamedia.org since May 2, 2014 in Ethiopia. It is worth noting that the Ethiopian government is notorious in blocking and jamming alternative media outlets, and violently silencing critical journalists.

Is ESAT in a joint venture with ETV ?

May 13, 2014 | Gulelepost

Is ESAT being fooled by TPLF agents or playing along willingly? During its broadcast on May 12,2014 ESAT aired a disturbing interview alleging that Oromos in Gimbi are threatening Amhra residents. What ESAT might not know is that an alternate version of the story was sent to Oromo activists and media outlets days before but rejected after it was found to be a plot.

Introduction

This essay presents my critical analysis and gives theological reflection on the current human rights violation in Oromia. Also, it will briefly discuss issues that are related to the entire Oromo people and make a genuine call to spiritual leaders and their followers in order to rise up against humiliation of Oromo people and halt the ongoing injustice in Oromia. It is a call to vie for God given human dignity, and stand in unison and support Oromo students who are demonstrating peacefully in opposition against the new master plan which is aimed to destroy Oromo identity.

3-Day Minnesota-State-Capitol #OromoProtests Solidarity Hunger-Strike Ends Successfully at the Passing of Minnesota House Resolution Condemning the Ethiopian Govt’s Violence on Oromo Students

May 12, 2014 | Gadaa.com

The three-day hunger-strike, which was held by Oromos and friends of the Oromo in front of the Minnesota State Capitol in solidarity with #OromoProtests and to seek justice for Oromo students and civilians massacred by the TPLF Ethiopian regime in April 2014, successfully ended earlier today with the issuance of the Minnesota House Resolution condemning the April 2014 massacres in Oromia and urging the U.S. Federal Government (which has the authority to interact with foreign governments per the U.S. Constitution) to “pressure on the Ethiopian authorities to respect human rights and democratic process.”

Statement of the National Youth Movement for Freedom and Democracy (aka Qeerroo Bilisummaa Oromoo) on the Current Non-violent Movement in Oromia

May 12, 2014 | Qeerroo Bilisummaa Oromoo

Over the last two weeks, the Oromo people and the Oromo youth, particularly the Oromo students of various colleges, universities, high schools, middle schools and elementary schools have been asking the Oromian regional government the right of the Oromo people on their country Oromia in a peaceful and legal manner according to the right given to us by the Ethiopian constitution.

However, the response of the Ethiopian government to our rightful question has been to unleash its Federal Police and a special military known as Agazi, armed to the teeth, on unarmed youth and civilian population and to turn the entire region into a battle field taking the lives of several dozen Oromians and kidnapping and arresting thousands others. Therefore, we, Qeerroo Bilisummaa Oromoo, hereby ask the Ethiopian government to give appropriate and immediate response to the following rightful and legal demands, which are also the demands of the entire Oromo people.

Witnesses: Ethiopian Forces Opened Fire on Protesters

Security forces in Ethiopia have reportedly opened fire on students who are protesting a government plan to expand the boundaries of the capital, Addis Ababa. Witnesses say forces fired live ammunition against peaceful protesters last week during a security crackdown that coincided with a visit by Secretary of State John Kerry. The government has said eight people died during the protests in the state of Oromia, but a resident of the town of Ambo told the BBC security forces killed 47 people.

A Tragic Consequence of the “10th Addis Ababa Integrated Development Master Plan.”

Warning for the future
May 11, 2014 | By Dr. Negaso Gidada

1. Introduction
Addis Ababa is now 127 years old as the capital of Ethiopia. It was founded by Empress Taitu and Emperor Menilik II in 1887 around the hot water spring called Finfinnee. Empress Taitu is said to have seen a kind of lower which she did not know before and called the area Addis Ababa, meaning New Flower. The Oromo call Addis Ababa as Finfinnee.

FINFINE IS THE CENTRAL AND INTEGRAL PART OF OROMIA

May 10, 2014 | Oromo Libration Front (OLF) statement

The authoritarian regime of TPLF-EPRDF in Ethiopia has continued reversing some rights achieved by the Oromo people’s struggle. Even the regime is continuing violating the rights enshrined in its own constitution of the country that has been worked out by its own experts. The wicked Master Plan of Addis Ababa that was declared recently by the incumbent regime is unfolding the continuation of dismembering Oromia state that has been underway since the last two decades. Beginning from 1991, TPLF’s strategic policy of eviction and displacement of Oromo from their ancestral land is unabated. Despite deafening propaganda and denials of the Integrated Master Plan’s infringing of the borders of Special Zones around Finfinne (Addis Abeba), the said Zones are already under Finfinne Administration practically.

Killings in Ethiopia outrage Minnesota’s Oromo community

May 08, 2014 | minnpost | By Ibrahim Hirsi

Members of Minnesota’s Oromo community plan to rally Friday in St. Paul and are calling for a hunger strike to mourn the deaths of student demonstrators gunned down last week by Ethiopian security forces in Addis Ababa.
Oromo students and others in Ethiopia have been protesting since April 26 a plan to develop the capital Addis Ababa, saying the proposal will displace farmers in the city outskirts, erase significant landmarks and dismantle the rich culture and identity of the ethnic Oromo people. Because the Oromia region surrounds Addis Ababa, an expansion of the city will mean a further blow of the region and its people, who have been marginalized for decades, they say.
