OLF Press Release

The Desperate Measures of the Ethiopian Regime Will Only Accelerate the Oromo People’s Struggle for Freedom

Oromo students at Arat-Killo and Amist-Killo Campuses of Finfinnee (Addis Ababa) University have been protesting since January 2, 2013. This is a continuation Oromia-wide protest that has been going on outside the campuses, albeit in different form and higher intensity. This protest, ignited by the persistent anti-Oromo posters by Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) agents in Arat-Killo campus, is expanding into other educational institutions.
Oromo students, who staged this protest against the denigration of the reputation of their nation, are paying heavy sacrifice. So far, more than 100 Oromo students have been arrested just for protesting the defamation of the Oromo nation. Some of them have been severely beaten and physically hurt. Some have disappeared. It is the Oromo that is insulted, the victim, who is arrested and beaten as well.
The TPLF regime is accustomed to using this outdated tactic of instigating conflict between the Oromo and fellow Abyssinian students to divert the general direction of the Oromo uprising and arrest and torture the Oromo students for the side issue of protesting against the defamation of their nation by the other “students.” Whenever anti-Oromo publication is distributed in any educational institutions instead of spotting the perpetrator and holding him/her accountable, the regime persecutes the Oromo students, who protest against this, by mass arrest torture and dismissal. This policy of instigating such publications and using the Oromo protest against this to get rid of the latter is a typical anti-Oromo stance of the regime.
Oromo students in different higher educational institutions, colleges and schools across Oromia, the youth and all the sections of the Oromo society have to join the uprising reignited by the Oromo Students of Finfinnee University. The TPLF regime needs be told that it cannot continue instigating anti-Oromo publications, and use Oromo protest against that as a pretext to arrest, torture and dismiss Oromo students. We call upon the Oromo people to stand up in unison to terminate this perennial persecution for good.
The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) condemns all inimical sabotages of the TPLF regime to denigrate Oromo and Oromo nationalism. It will as well appropriately respond to the current measure of the regime. We will assure the regime that such measures will only galvanize the Oromo resolve to get rid of this rotten attitude and system.
We want the regime to know that it is impossible to silence the Oromo people by demoralizing. We demand the immediate release of all the students detained, those physically hurt be treated and compensated and those dismissed re-instituted. We insist that the entity responsible for derogatory publications be brought to justice and get deserved punishment.
Victory to the Oromo People!
